Chapter 3: The Letter No One Was Supposed to See

For several long seconds, no one moved.

The ivory envelope lay in Daniel's hand, its edges slightly creased from where it had slipped from inside Victoria's wedding gown. Written across the front in neat black ink were three unmistakable words:

Do Not Open.

The hallway had gone completely silent.

Guests who had wandered toward the ballroom entrance sensed something was wrong. Quiet conversations faded into uneasy whispers as they watched from a distance.

Victoria's face drained of color.

"Give me that," she said quickly, stepping forward.

Daniel instinctively took one step back.

Lucas looked from the envelope to his fiancée.

"What is it?"

Victoria forced a smile that didn't reach her eyes.

"It's nothing."

Lucas frowned.

"If it's nothing, why hide it inside your dress?"

"It was just... a personal note."

"A personal note?"

She nodded.

"My maid of honor wrote me something sentimental to read before the ceremony."

Lucas turned toward the bridal suite.

"Then why wasn't it with your things?"

Victoria hesitated.

"I wanted to keep it close."

Daniel looked at the envelope again.

"It doesn't exactly look sentimental."

Victoria reached for it again.

"Daniel, please."

Lucas gently held up a hand.

"Wait."

He wasn't angry.

Not yet.

He was trying desperately to understand why everything suddenly felt so unfamiliar.

He looked at Victoria, searching for the woman he'd fallen in love with.

"Who wrote it?"

"I already told you."

"Then why doesn't it have her handwriting?"

Victoria blinked.

"You've seen her handwriting?"

Lucas nodded.

"She helped address our invitations."

Victoria opened her mouth, then closed it again.

For the first time that morning, she had no immediate answer.

Daniel quietly looked at Lucas.

"What do you want me to do?"

Lucas didn't respond right away.

Instead, he crouched beside Sophie.

"Sweetheart, would you wait with Uncle Daniel for just a minute?"

She wrapped both arms tightly around his neck.

"I don't want you to leave."

"I'm not leaving."

"You promise?"

"I promise."

She searched his face before slowly nodding.

Daniel took Sophie's hand while Lucas turned back toward Victoria.

"Let's talk."

Victoria glanced toward the ballroom doors.

"The guests are waiting."

"They can wait."

"The ceremony—"

"Can wait."

His voice remained calm, but it carried a firmness Victoria had rarely heard before.

She led him into a small private sitting room beside the hallway.

The door closed behind them.

For several moments, neither of them spoke.

Lucas broke the silence.

"I need you to tell me the truth."

"I have."

"No."

His voice softened.

"I've known you for almost two years."

"You know me."

"I thought I did."

The words landed harder than he intended.

Victoria looked away.

"You really believe I would hurt Sophie?"

"I don't know what to believe."

She folded her arms tightly.

"I was nervous."

"So nervous that you locked a six-year-old in a bathroom?"

Her eyes widened.

"I never locked her in."

Lucas studied her expression.

It didn't look rehearsed.

It looked offended.

"Then how did she end up trapped?"

"I don't know."

"You expect me to believe that?"

"I told her to wait outside while I finished getting dressed."

"Then?"

"I assumed she left."

Lucas slowly shook his head.

"She says you told her she wasn't going to be part of this family."

Victoria sighed heavily.

"I said this family would be changing."

"Explain."

"I told her that after the wedding, we'd have new routines."

Lucas remained silent.

"I told her we'd all have to make sacrifices."

"And?"

"I may have said things wouldn't always be just Daddy and Sophie anymore."

Lucas stared at her.

"Those are very different words."

Victoria rubbed her forehead.

"Lucas, she's six."

"Exactly."

"Children misunderstand things."

"They also remember how adults make them feel."

That sentence lingered between them.

Victoria's shoulders slowly slumped.

"I never wanted her to feel afraid."

"But she is."

"I know."

Lucas looked toward the closed door.

"I found her shaking."

Victoria closed her eyes.

"I didn't know."

Another silence followed.

Then Lucas asked the question he had been avoiding.

"Is there something you're not telling me?"

Victoria's eyes met his.

For just a moment, they softened.

Then she whispered,

"Yes."

Lucas felt his heartbeat quicken.

"But it isn't what you think."

Before she could continue, the sitting room door burst open.

Daniel stepped inside, looking unusually serious.

"You need to see this."

Lucas stood immediately.

"What happened?"

Daniel held up the envelope.

"I didn't open it."

"Good."

"But someone else recognized the handwriting."

Lucas frowned.

"Who?"

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

"Your mother."

Lucas's stomach tightened.

His mother, Margaret Bennett, slowly entered the room.

The elegant silver-haired woman looked directly at Victoria.

Her expression was unreadable.

She spoke only one sentence.

"I've seen that handwriting before."

Victoria's breathing stopped.

Margaret didn't take her eyes off her.

"It belongs to someone who warned our family six months ago..."

She paused.

"...not to let this wedding happen."

The room fell into stunned silence.

May you like

Lucas looked from his mother to Victoria, realizing that whatever truth had been hidden until now was far bigger than a misunderstanding between a bride and a frightened little girl.

It was a secret someone had tried to reveal long before the wedding day.
