Chapter 13: Claire's Return

Lucas couldn't take his eyes off the two photographs.
One had been taken seven years earlier in the pediatric wing of St. Anne's Hospital. The other had been captured only hours ago by the hotel's security camera.
There was no mistaking the resemblance.
The woman was older now, with shorter hair and a few faint lines around her eyes, but it was undeniably the same person.
Claire Dawson.
Victoria slowly sat down, still staring at the images.
"I never imagined I'd see her again."
Lucas looked at her.
"Tell me everything you remember."
Victoria took a deep breath.
"We weren't friends."
Emily nodded.
"Not even close."
"Then how did you know her?" Lucas asked.
"We volunteered at the children's reading program together."
Victoria folded her hands tightly in her lap.
"Claire was friendly at first."
"But?"
"But she asked questions that didn't seem normal."
"What kind of questions?"
Victoria thought carefully.
"She wanted to know everything about Emma."
"Her family."
"Her marriage."
"Her finances."
Lucas frowned.
"My finances?"
Victoria nodded.
"At first we assumed she was just making conversation."
Emily added, "Then it became... uncomfortable."
Lucas waited.
"She asked whether you owned your home."
"Whether you had life insurance."
"Whether Emma had written a will."
Daniel raised an eyebrow.
"That's unusually personal."
"Exactly," Emily replied.
Victoria continued.
"Emma laughed it off."
"She said Claire was probably just curious."
"But I wasn't so sure."
Lucas looked toward Richard.
"Did Emma ever mention Claire to you?"
The attorney nodded slowly.
"Only once."
"What did she say?"
Richard thought for a moment.
"She told me there was a volunteer who asked too many questions."
Lucas exchanged a glance with Victoria.
"So Emma noticed too."
Richard nodded.
"She didn't seem frightened."
"Just puzzled."
Lucas looked back at the photographs.
"What happened to Claire?"
Victoria shrugged.
"One day she simply stopped volunteering."
"No goodbye."
"No explanation."
Emily added, "We assumed she moved away."
Lucas sighed.
"And now she suddenly appears at my wedding."
No one had an answer.
The hotel manager stepped forward.
"Our security team found something else."
Everyone turned toward him.
"What is it?" Lucas asked.
"We tracked Claire's movements through the cameras that were still operating."
"You did?"
He nodded.
"The hallway camera was disabled."
"But the lobby cameras were not."
He handed Lucas a printed timeline.
"She arrived at the hotel at 10:41 this morning."
Lucas scanned the report.
"She never checked in?"
"No."
"She wasn't a guest."
The manager continued.
"She entered through the main entrance carrying a wooden keepsake box."
"The same one the housekeeper mentioned," Daniel said.
"Correct."
Lucas kept reading.
"Then what?"
"She spent eleven minutes on the second floor."
"The bridal suite."
The manager nodded.
"After that, she left carrying only her handbag."
"The wooden box was gone."
Lucas looked up.
"So she left it somewhere inside."
"That's our conclusion."
Victoria frowned.
"But my room was searched."
The manager nodded.
"Our staff checked after you requested it."
"And?"
"Nothing."
Daniel leaned against the table.
"So either someone removed the box..."
"...or it's still hidden."
Lucas looked at the manager.
"Search the bridal suite again."
"We already have."
"Search it a third time."
The manager nodded.
"I'll personally supervise it."
As he left the room, Richard quietly spoke.
"Lucas."
"Yes?"
"There is something else you should know."
Lucas turned.
"I looked into Claire several years ago."
Victoria looked surprised.
"You did?"
Richard nodded.
"After Emma mentioned her."
Lucas frowned.
"What did you find?"
"Very little."
"She moved frequently."
"No long-term employment."
"No close relatives listed."
Daniel asked, "Anything unusual?"
Richard hesitated.
"There was one thing."
"What?"
"She worked briefly for a private investigations firm."
Lucas blinked.
"A private investigator?"
"Not exactly."
"She was an administrative assistant."
"But she had access to investigative files."
The room grew quiet.
Victoria whispered,
"So she knew how to find information."
Richard nodded.
"It appears so."
Before anyone could continue, the hotel manager rushed back into the ballroom.
His face looked different.
Excited.
"Mr. Bennett!"
Lucas immediately stood.
"You found something?"
"We did."
"What?"
The manager held up a small wooden keepsake box.
It was old, beautifully carved with tiny vines and flowers along the edges.
Victoria gasped.
"That's the box Sophie described."
Lucas carefully took it from the manager.
It wasn't locked.
Only a small brass clasp kept it closed.
Inside were several items.
Emma's silver necklace.
The old photograph of Emma and Victoria.
A faded friendship bracelet.
A pressed white rose.
And beneath them all...
A small digital voice recorder.
Everyone stared at it.
Daniel frowned.
"Does it still work?"
The manager pressed the power button.
A tiny green light blinked.
"It has battery."
Lucas picked it up carefully.
There was only one recording stored on the device.
The display read:
July 14 — 8:42 PM
Richard's eyes widened.
"That's..."
He checked the date.
"The night before Emma passed away."
Lucas felt his heart pounding.
Victoria covered her mouth.
Emily reached for Daniel's arm.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
Lucas looked at the tiny recorder resting in his hand.
"If this is what I think it is..."
His voice trailed off.
Richard nodded solemnly.
"It may be the last time Emma ever spoke."
Lucas slowly pressed the Play button.
The recorder crackled with static.
A soft voice began to speak.
It was unmistakable.
Emma.
"Hello..."
She paused, taking a slow breath.
"If you're hearing this..."
The recording briefly cut out before continuing.
"...then something happened that I hoped never would."
Suddenly the audio filled with loud interference.
The words became impossible to understand.
Then, just before the recording stopped completely, one final sentence came through clearly.
"Don't blame Claire..."
The recorder clicked off.
The room stood frozen.
Lucas looked down at the silent device, unable to believe what he had just heard.
Emma's final message had named the very woman everyone suspected.
Not to accuse her.
May you like
But to protect her.
And that changed everything.
