Chapter 10: Emma’s Final Instructions

The grand ballroom fell completely silent.
Nearly two hundred guests stood frozen, watching the elderly man at the entrance.
Lucas stepped forward.
"You were Emma's attorney?"
The man nodded.
"My name is Richard Holloway."
He offered his hand.
Lucas shook it automatically, though his mind was racing.
"I handled Emma's estate before and after her passing."
Lucas frowned.
"I don't remember meeting you."
Richard gave a sympathetic smile.
"You wouldn't."
"Why not?"
"Emma instructed me not to contact you unless certain conditions were met."
The words hit Lucas like a wave.
"She... what?"
Richard slowly opened his worn leather briefcase.
Inside were several neatly organized folders and a thick sealed envelope.
Across the front, in Emma's unmistakable handwriting, were the words:
For Lucas—Only If the Time Is Right.
Lucas stared at the envelope.
His throat tightened.
"She wrote that?"
Richard nodded.
"Seven years ago."
Victoria looked equally stunned.
"You still had it?"
"I was instructed to keep it secure."
"For seven years?"
"Yes."
Daniel folded his arms.
"What conditions?"
Richard looked around the crowded ballroom.
"I'm afraid this isn't the place."
Lucas glanced at the guests.
Most were whispering now, completely unaware of the history unfolding before them.
He turned to the wedding planner.
"I'm sorry."
She gave him a gentle nod.
"I'll ask everyone to move into the reception lounge."
Within minutes, the ballroom had mostly emptied.
Only Lucas, Sophie, Victoria, Margaret, Daniel, Emily, Richard, and the hotel manager remained.
The enormous room suddenly felt strangely empty.
Richard placed the envelope on a nearby table.
"I've waited a long time for this moment."
Lucas couldn't take his eyes off Emma's handwriting.
"What exactly did she leave behind?"
Richard answered carefully.
"Instructions."
"For what?"
"For when you were finally ready to build a new life."
Lucas looked confused.
"How could she possibly know when that would be?"
Richard smiled sadly.
"She didn't."
"Then how?"
"She asked me to decide."
Lucas blinked.
"You?"
"I met with her three times during the last month of her life."
Richard's voice softened.
"She wasn't preparing for death."
"She was preparing for your future."
Lucas lowered his eyes.
That sounded exactly like Emma.
Always thinking ahead.
Always thinking about someone else.
Richard continued.
"Emma made one thing very clear."
"What?"
"She never wanted grief to become your permanent home."
Lucas felt tears sting his eyes.
Richard looked toward Victoria.
"She also spoke often about you."
Victoria looked surprised.
"Me?"
Richard nodded.
"She trusted you."
Victoria's voice trembled.
"I didn't know she had spoken to anyone else."
"There were very few."
Richard turned back to Lucas.
"Emma asked me to watch from a distance."
"For what?"
"For the day you smiled again."
Lucas frowned.
"I don't understand."
Richard gave a small smile.
"The day you stopped surviving..."
"...and started living."
Silence settled over the room.
Richard gently pushed the envelope toward Lucas.
"I believe today was supposed to be that day."
Lucas looked down at it.
His hands trembled.
"But now..."
Richard sighed.
"Now everything has become more complicated."
Lucas carefully broke the wax seal.
Inside was a neatly folded letter.
He unfolded it slowly.
The familiar handwriting immediately brought tears to his eyes.
He began reading aloud.
My Dearest Lucas,
If you're reading this, then something wonderful has happened.
It means you've allowed yourself to love again.
If that's true, then I'm happier than words can express.
Please don't ever feel guilty for moving forward. Loving someone new doesn't erase the life we shared. It simply means your heart survived losing mine.
If the woman standing beside you is kind to Sophie, patient with your fears, and willing to build a future instead of replacing the past... then I hope you'll choose happiness without looking back.
Lucas paused.
His vision blurred.
He swallowed hard before continuing.
There is one thing I ask.
Before you marry again, tell Sophie about me—not because she needs to remember how I died, but because she deserves to know how deeply she was loved.
And promise me something else.
Never choose someone because you think Sophie needs a mother.
Choose her because you truly love her.
Children always know the difference.
Lucas closed his eyes.
Emma knew him so well.
He remembered the years after her death.
The loneliness.
The guilt.
The constant fear that Sophie was growing up without enough love.
How many times had he wondered if he was searching for a wife...
...when what he was really searching for was someone to help raise his daughter?
Emma had understood that fear years before he admitted it to himself.
He continued reading.
Finally...
If Victoria is standing beside you today...
Lucas stopped reading.
The room became perfectly still.
He slowly looked up at Victoria.
She stared back at him, equally shocked.
Richard lowered his eyes.
"I never opened the letter."
Lucas looked back at the page.
His hands shook as he continued.
...then life has a remarkable sense of timing.
I know she'll probably never tell you how we knew each other because I asked her not to.
Please don't be angry with her for keeping that promise.
She has carried enough guilt already.
None of what happened was her fault.
Lucas's voice faltered.
He looked up.
Victoria was crying openly now.
Richard quietly wiped his glasses.
Margaret placed a comforting hand over her mouth.
Lucas finished the final paragraph.
There is one truth Victoria doesn't know.
I never told her because I didn't want her carrying one more burden.
Richard has the documents.
When the time comes, he'll explain everything.
Love always,
Emma
Lucas lowered the letter.
His heart pounded.
Slowly, every eye in the room turned toward Richard.
The elderly attorney took a long breath.
"I was hoping this day would be filled with joy."
He reached into his briefcase and removed a thick sealed file.
Instead of handing it to Lucas...
...he placed it in front of Victoria.
She looked confused.
"What is this?"
Richard's expression was solemn.
"The one thing Emma never wanted you to discover."
Victoria stared at the file.
Then, with trembling fingers, she read the words printed across the front.
CONFIDENTIAL
Regarding the Death of Emma Bennett
Her face lost every trace of color.
"What..."
May you like
she whispered.
"...do you mean 'regarding her death'?"
