Chapter 11: The Truth Emma Never Shared

Victoria's hands froze above the confidential file.

For a long moment, she couldn't bring herself to touch it.

The words on the cover seemed impossible to process.

Regarding the Death of Emma Bennett.

Lucas stood beside her, still holding Emma's letter. His emotions were tangled—grief, confusion, hope, and fear all colliding at once.

He looked at Richard.

"What is this?"

The attorney removed his glasses and sighed.

"It contains documents Emma instructed me to keep sealed."

"For seven years?"

"Yes."

Lucas frowned.

"Why?"

Richard answered carefully.

"Because she believed the information inside would only cause unnecessary pain unless a very specific day arrived."

"And today is that day?"

Richard nodded.

"According to her instructions."

Victoria finally found her voice.

"You said... she never wanted me to discover this."

"That's correct."

"Why?"

Richard looked at her with compassion.

"Because she loved you."

Victoria closed her eyes as fresh tears rolled down her cheeks.

"I loved her too."

"I know."

Richard rested a hand on the file.

"Emma believed you blamed yourself for what happened."

Victoria's shoulders stiffened.

Lucas noticed immediately.

"What does he mean?"

Victoria remained silent.

Richard continued.

"After Emma became ill, Victoria believed she could have convinced her to seek treatment sooner."

Lucas looked confused.

"What treatment?"

Richard hesitated.

"The specialists."

Lucas stared at him.

"Emma delayed treatment?"

Richard nodded slowly.

"Several times."

Lucas felt as though the room had tilted beneath him.

"No..."

He shook his head.

"She told me the doctors were optimistic."

Richard lowered his gaze.

"She wasn't completely honest."

Lucas struggled to breathe.

"She... lied to me?"

"She protected you."

The words echoed painfully through the room.

Lucas remembered those final months.

Emma insisting she was feeling better.

Emma smiling after appointments.

Emma changing the subject whenever he asked difficult questions.

He had believed every word.

Richard continued gently.

"Emma wanted you to focus on Sophie."

Lucas's voice cracked.

"So while I thought we still had time..."

"...she already knew."

Richard nodded.

"She understood the seriousness of her condition much earlier than anyone realized."

Lucas lowered himself into a nearby chair.

The memories came rushing back.

The vacations they had postponed.

The family photos Emma had insisted on taking.

The handwritten birthday letters she had prepared for Sophie years in advance.

At the time, Lucas thought she was simply being sentimental.

Now he understood.

She had been preparing for a future she knew she might never see.

Across the room, Victoria quietly opened the confidential file.

Inside were medical records, consultation notes, and several handwritten pages.

One document slipped onto the table.

Victoria picked it up.

Her breathing stopped.

"It can't be..."

Lucas looked up.

"What is it?"

She slowly handed him the paper.

It was a consultation summary from one of the nation's leading cancer specialists.

Across the top was a date.

Nearly eight months before Emma had officially told Lucas about her diagnosis.

Lucas stared at the page.

"Eight months..."

Richard nodded.

"She sought a second opinion long before she shared the diagnosis with anyone."

Lucas felt his chest tighten.

"Why wouldn't she tell me?"

Richard answered softly.

"Because she was trying to protect the people she loved."

Margaret wiped away tears.

"That sounds exactly like Emma."

Victoria quietly turned another page.

Then another.

Suddenly she stopped.

Her expression changed.

"No..."

Richard looked at her.

"You found it."

Victoria slowly looked up.

"This wasn't my fault."

Richard smiled gently.

"No."

"It never was."

Lucas frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Victoria handed him another document.

It was a handwritten note from Emma addressed to Richard.

Lucas began reading.

Richard, if Victoria ever blames herself for my illness, please tell her the truth.

She begged me to see another specialist. She argued with me. She even offered to drive me herself.

If anyone delayed treatment, it was me—not her.

She was the best friend anyone could ask for.

Don't let her carry guilt that belongs to no one.

Victoria covered her face as she sobbed.

"For seven years..."

She struggled to speak.

"I thought if I had pushed harder..."

Richard shook his head.

"Emma knew you would feel that way."

Lucas walked over to Victoria.

For the first time since the morning had unraveled, he gently placed a hand on her shoulder.

"You carried this alone?"

Victoria nodded.

"Every day."

"I kept thinking..."

She wiped away tears.

"...maybe if I'd forced her into the car..."

"...maybe if I'd ignored what she wanted..."

"...maybe she'd still be here."

Lucas's own eyes filled.

"You couldn't have known."

"I should have done more."

"No."

Lucas looked at Emma's note.

"She made her own decisions."

Victoria nodded weakly.

"I know that now."

For several moments, no one spoke.

The room felt lighter somehow.

One terrible burden had finally been lifted.

Yet Lucas couldn't shake the feeling that pieces were still missing.

He looked at Richard.

"The anonymous letters."

"The box."

"The necklace."

"Sophie being locked in the restroom."

"None of this explains any of it."

Richard's expression grew serious once again.

"No."

"It doesn't."

He reached back into his briefcase.

"There was one document I intentionally left until last."

Lucas frowned.

"Why?"

"Because I wasn't sure anyone here was ready to read it."

He removed a sealed envelope unlike the others.

It was newer.

The paper hadn't yellowed with age.

Across the front, in handwriting that was not Emma's, were four simple words:

Open Only If Necessary.

Richard looked directly at Lucas.

"I received this envelope exactly three days after Emma's funeral."

Lucas's heartbeat quickened.

"Who sent it?"

Richard slowly shook his head.

"There was no return address."

"Did you open it?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because the sender included one sentence."

Richard turned the envelope over.

Written on the back was a message in the same familiar handwriting that had appeared on the anonymous letters, the mysterious box, and the note hidden inside Victoria's wedding dress.
