Chapter 2: The Ceremony That Never Began

The first notes of the wedding march drifted through the hallway.
Guests inside the ballroom rose to their feet, smiling as they turned toward the grand entrance, expecting to see Lucas waiting at the altar.
Instead, the groom remained kneeling beside his frightened daughter.
Lucas stared into Sophie's tear-filled eyes, trying to make sense of what she had just said.
"...I wouldn't be part of the family anymore."
The words didn't sound like something a six-year-old would invent.
Still, they were impossible to believe.
Victoria had always been kind to Sophie—or at least she had appeared to be. She helped with homework, remembered Sophie's favorite ice cream, and even insisted the little girl help choose the wedding flowers.
Lucas had watched them laugh together countless times.
Had all of it been an act?
He forced himself to stay calm.
"Sophie," he said gently, brushing away another tear, "can you tell me exactly what happened?"
She nodded slowly.
"I went to look for you."
"Okay."
"I couldn't find you."
"So I went by Miss Victoria's room."
Lucas listened without interrupting.
"The door was open just a little."
"What happened then?"
Sophie's fingers tightened around the flower basket.
"She looked at me."
"And?"
"She didn't smile."
Lucas felt a chill creep up his spine.
"What did she say?"
Sophie's small voice shook.
"She said grown-ups needed to talk."
Lucas nodded encouragingly.
"Then she told me..."
Sophie hesitated, as though repeating the words would make them real again.
"She said after today..."
"...Daddy would have a new family."
Lucas closed his eyes for a brief moment.
"And she said..."
Sophie's lip quivered.
"...there wouldn't be room for me."
His heart sank.
Before he could respond, Daniel came jogging down the hallway.
"There you are!" he called. "Everyone's waiting."
Then he noticed Sophie's face.
His smile disappeared.
"What happened?"
Lucas stood, lifting Sophie into his arms.
"Someone locked her in the restroom."
Daniel blinked.
"What?"
Lucas didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he asked quietly, "Where's Victoria?"
"In the bridal suite."
Daniel studied Lucas's expression.
"What are you thinking?"
Lucas glanced toward the ballroom doors.
"I need answers."
The music inside reached its final verse.
The officiant checked his watch.
Guests whispered among themselves.
The flower girls looked nervously toward the entrance.
One minute passed.
Then another.
Inside the bridal suite, Victoria admired herself in the full-length mirror while her maid of honor adjusted the train of her elegant white gown.
"You look perfect," her friend said.
Victoria smiled.
"Everything has to be perfect."
A wedding planner hurried into the room.
"Lucas hasn't come to the altar yet."
Victoria frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"We're not sure where he is."
She sighed impatiently.
"He probably got emotional."
Her phone buzzed.
No message from Lucas.
Another knock interrupted them.
The planner returned.
"He's asking to speak with you."
Victoria relaxed.
"See? I told you."
She smoothed the front of her dress before walking into the hallway.
Lucas was waiting near the entrance, Sophie resting quietly against his shoulder.
Victoria's smile faded the moment she noticed the little girl's tear-stained face.
"What happened?"
Lucas looked directly at her.
"That's exactly what I'd like to know."
She glanced at Sophie.
"Honey, are you okay?"
The little girl buried her face against her father's shoulder without answering.
Victoria looked confused.
"Lucas?"
He spoke carefully.
"Did you talk to Sophie a few minutes ago?"
"Of course."
"What did you say?"
Victoria hesitated.
"I just told her everyone was getting ready."
Lucas didn't look away.
"Are you sure that's all?"
A flicker crossed her face—so brief that most people wouldn't have noticed.
But Lucas did.
"I don't understand," she replied.
"Sophie says you told her she wouldn't be part of this family after today."
Silence.
Victoria looked at Sophie.
Then back at Lucas.
Finally she laughed.
"A six-year-old misunderstood something."
Lucas didn't smile.
"Did you say those words?"
"I said families change."
"That's not what I asked."
Victoria folded her arms.
"I may have said things would be different after the wedding."
"Different how?"
"Lucas..."
"I need a straight answer."
She exhaled sharply.
"I was trying to prepare her for change. That's all."
Sophie suddenly whispered from Lucas's shoulder.
"You said Daddy wouldn't need me anymore."
Victoria's face turned pale.
"I never said that."
"You did."
"I didn't."
"I heard you."
The hallway fell silent.
Daniel looked from one to the other, unsure what to believe.
Several guests had begun peeking through the ballroom doors, wondering why the ceremony hadn't started.
One elderly woman whispered to another.
"Is something wrong?"
Lucas barely noticed them.
He was watching Victoria.
Not her words.
Her eyes.
For the first time since they'd met nearly two years earlier, he saw something unfamiliar there.
Not warmth.
Not concern.
Not confusion.
Fear.
As Victoria instinctively reached up to adjust the neckline of her wedding gown, a folded envelope hidden inside the lace lining slipped free.
It fluttered silently onto the marble floor between them.
No one moved.
Sophie's eyes widened.
Daniel bent down and picked it up.
May you like
The envelope had only three handwritten words across the front.
Do Not Open.
