Chapter 1: The Knock Behind the Door

The Whitmore Grand Hotel had never looked more beautiful.
Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead, reflecting warm golden light across polished marble floors. White roses and ivory orchids lined the aisle, while a string quartet filled the ballroom with soft classical music. Nearly two hundred guests chatted excitedly, waiting for the ceremony to begin.
Outside the bridal suite, wedding planners hurried from one room to another, making sure every last detail was perfect.
Everyone believed this would be the happiest day of Lucas Bennett's life.
At thirty-six, Lucas had spent years rebuilding his world after losing his wife, Emma, to an unexpected illness. Left to raise their six-year-old daughter, Sophie, on his own, he had poured every ounce of his heart into being both a father and a mother.
For a long time, he had convinced himself he would never love again.
Then he met Victoria.
She was confident, intelligent, and graceful. More importantly, she seemed patient with Sophie. During the first months of their relationship, Victoria always brought small gifts for the little girl, read bedtime stories whenever she stayed over, and insisted they spend weekends together instead of taking romantic trips alone.
Lucas had taken those moments as proof that his daughter would gain not only a stepmother, but another person who truly cared about her.
That belief had brought them all to this day.
Standing in a private lounge beside the ballroom, Lucas adjusted the cuffs of his tuxedo while his best friend, Daniel, straightened his tie.
"You nervous?" Daniel asked with a grin.
Lucas laughed softly.
"A little."
"You still have time to run."
"I've already paid for the flowers."
Daniel chuckled.
"Fair point."
Lucas glanced toward the ballroom entrance where guests were beginning to take their seats.
"What about Sophie?" he asked.
Daniel looked around.
"I thought she was with the flower girls."
Lucas frowned.
"She was ten minutes ago."
"Kids wander."
"I should check."
Before Daniel could answer, the wedding coordinator approached.
"Mr. Bennett," she said with a reassuring smile, "we'll be starting in five minutes."
Lucas nodded politely.
"I'll just find my daughter."
As he stepped into the hallway, the joyful sounds of the ballroom faded behind him. The hotel corridor was noticeably quieter, with only the distant hum of elevators and the muffled music echoing through the walls.
He checked the dressing room.
Empty.
The photo lounge.
Empty.
The dessert display where Sophie had begged for an extra macaron earlier.
Nothing.
His heartbeat quickened.
"Sophie?" he called.
No answer.
He walked faster, peeking into every open doorway.
Housekeeping closets.
Conference rooms.
Storage alcoves.
Still nothing.
Just as he reached the far end of the hallway, he stopped.
A faint sound.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
It was so soft he almost thought he'd imagined it.
Then came a trembling whisper.
"Daddy..."
Lucas froze.
"...I'm scared."
His pulse slammed against his chest.
"Sophie?"
Another weak knock answered him.
"I'm in here..."
He sprinted toward the women's restroom.
The main door stood slightly open, but one of the stalls at the back was locked.
Lucas dropped to one knee beside it.
"Sophie?"
A tiny sob escaped from inside.
"Daddy..."
His voice became calm despite the panic racing through him.
"It's okay, sweetheart. I'm here."
"I couldn't get out."
He tried the handle.
Locked.
"Step back for me."
The little girl sniffled.
"Okay..."
Lucas pulled hard once.
Nothing.
Again.
The old latch groaned.
On the third pull, the lock snapped free.
The stall door swung open.
Sophie stood curled against the wall, clutching the white flower basket she had carried all morning. Tears streaked down her cheeks, and her tiny hands trembled so badly that several rose petals had fallen onto the floor around her shoes.
Without hesitation, she threw herself into Lucas's arms.
He held her tightly.
"You're safe," he whispered.
"I've got you."
For nearly a minute, neither of them spoke.
Lucas gently brushed her blonde hair away from her face.
"Did someone lock you in here?"
She nodded.
His expression darkened.
"Who?"
Sophie slowly lifted one shaking finger.
She pointed toward the ballroom.
Toward the bridal suite.
Toward Victoria.
Lucas stared at her, certain he had misunderstood.
"Sophie..."
The little girl looked into his eyes, her lip trembling.
"She said..."
Her voice cracked.
"...after today..."
She swallowed hard.
"...I wouldn't be part of the family anymore."
The words echoed through the empty hallway.
For several long seconds, Lucas couldn't breathe.

Then, from somewhere inside the ballroom, the music changed.
The wedding procession had begun.
