Chapter 12: The Last Envelope

No one reached for the envelope.
It rested on the conference table like it carried the weight of the entire morning.
Lucas stared at the familiar handwriting.
It was the same script that had appeared on the anonymous letters.
The same handwriting that had labeled the mysterious box.
The same careful strokes that had written Do Not Open.
Richard looked around the room.
"I've honored the sender's request for seven years."
Lucas asked quietly, "Why now?"
"Because the condition has been met."
Lucas lowered his eyes.
"I'm about to marry again."
Richard nodded.
"Or at least... you were."
The room fell silent.
Victoria stood a few feet away, wiping tears from her face. She no longer looked like a bride waiting for a ceremony.
She looked like someone whose entire past had been pulled into the light.
Lucas finally reached for the envelope.
His fingers hesitated over the seal.
"What if opening this changes everything?"
Richard answered honestly.
"It might."
Daniel folded his arms.
"It also might explain everything."
Lucas nodded.
Slowly, he broke the seal.
Inside was a handwritten letter and a small folded newspaper clipping.
He set the clipping aside and unfolded the letter.
There was no greeting.
Only the date.
Three days after Emma's funeral.
Lucas began reading aloud.
If you're reading this, then Richard has decided the time is right.
My name doesn't matter as much as the truth.
I loved Emma very much—not as a husband or partner, but as a friend who admired her kindness.
Before she passed away, she asked several people to keep different promises. I was one of them.
Lucas looked up.
Richard nodded.
Emma worried about something more than her illness.
She worried that Lucas would spend the rest of his life feeling guilty for surviving.
She worried that Sophie would grow up believing happiness ended the day her mother died.
She asked us to help prevent that from happening.
Lucas felt his throat tighten.
He continued.
You may already know that Victoria promised to watch over Lucas and Sophie if life brought them together naturally.
Emily promised to keep Victoria's connection to Emma a secret unless Victoria chose to reveal it herself.
Richard promised to safeguard Emma's letters until the proper time.
Lucas slowly lowered the page.
"So all of you..."
Richard nodded.
"We each carried a different promise."
Emily quietly wiped away tears.
"I hated keeping secrets from you."
Victoria looked at her friend.
"I never knew Emma had asked you."
"She didn't want you carrying everything alone."
Lucas looked back at the letter.
There was still more.
If you're reading this because someone has tried to use these promises against Victoria, then you should know one important fact.
Victoria never asked for any of this.
She wanted to tell Lucas the truth many times.
Emma made her promise not to.
Lucas stopped.
He looked at Victoria.
She met his eyes without saying a word.
For the first time all day, there was no fear in her expression.
Only sadness.
Lucas continued.
The people I worry about are not Emma's friends.
I worry about people who mistake kindness for weakness.
If Lucas receives anonymous warnings one day, don't assume they're meant to protect him.
Some people don't want him to heal.
Daniel frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Lucas kept reading.
Grief changes families.
It also reveals jealousy, resentment, and old wounds that most people never see.
If anyone tries to convince Lucas that Emma would not have wanted him to move forward, they are lying.
I heard her say exactly the opposite.
Lucas slowly lowered the letter.
The room remained quiet.
Margaret looked thoughtful.
"So whoever wrote this..."
"...was defending Victoria."
Richard nodded.
"That seems clear."
Lucas picked up the newspaper clipping that had been tucked inside.
It was an article from seven years earlier.
The headline read:
Local Woman Establishes Children's Reading Program in Hospital Pediatric Wing
Beneath the headline was a photograph.
Emma.
Victoria.
Emily.
And several volunteers reading books to children receiving cancer treatment.
Lucas smiled faintly.
"I've never seen this."
Victoria looked over his shoulder.
"Emma loved that program."
Emily nodded.
"She started it after meeting a little girl who said hospitals were lonely."
Lucas studied the picture.
Emma was smiling exactly as he remembered.
Warm.
Hopeful.
Completely herself.
Then something caught his attention.
He looked closer.
Standing in the background of the photograph, partially hidden near a doorway, was another woman.
Only half her face was visible.
She wasn't looking at the children.
She wasn't looking at Emma.
She was looking directly at the camera.
Lucas frowned.
"Who's that?"
Victoria leaned closer.
"I..."
She narrowed her eyes.
"I know her."
Emily followed her gaze.
"So do I."
Lucas looked up.
"Who is she?"
Victoria hesitated.
"I haven't seen her in years."
"What was her name?"
Victoria searched her memory.
"Claire."
"Claire...?"
"Claire Dawson."
Emily nodded slowly.
"She volunteered at the hospital for a few months."
Lucas studied the photograph again.
"Was she friends with Emma?"
Victoria shook her head.
"Not really."
"Then why do you remember her?"
Victoria's expression changed.
"Because..."
She paused.
"...she asked Emma a lot of personal questions."
"What kind of questions?"
"About you."
Lucas blinked.
"About me?"
Victoria nodded.
"She wanted to know where you worked."
"Whether you had family nearby."
"What kind of life you and Emma had together."
Emily added quietly,
"I always thought it was strange."
Lucas looked back at the old photograph.
The woman in the background seemed almost invisible.
Someone you wouldn't notice unless you were looking carefully.
But now...
He couldn't stop looking at her.
Richard slowly reached into his briefcase one final time.
"I almost forgot."
He placed a recent photograph beside the old newspaper clipping.
It had been taken by one of the hotel's security cameras that morning.
The image was slightly grainy, but the face was clear enough.
The woman wearing the cream-colored pantsuit.
The woman the housekeeper had let into the bridal suite.
Lucas compared the two photographs.
Seven years had passed.
Her hairstyle had changed.
She looked older.
But there was no doubt.
It was the same woman.
Victoria whispered the name before anyone else could.
"...Claire."
The room fell silent.
Lucas stared at the photographs side by side.
One question echoed through his mind.

Why had a woman from Emma's past suddenly appeared on the morning of his wedding...
...after disappearing for seven years?
