Chapter 8 - The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Chapter 8 - The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
The photograph remained on the hospital table for several minutes.
Nobody touched it.
Nobody spoke.
Because the image created a new impossible question.

How could a dead woman appear inside the Harrow mansion?
Detective Marcus Reed looked from the photograph to Claire.
“Are you certain?”
Claire did not answer immediately.
Her eyes stayed locked on the image.
The woman walking through the front gate.
The posture.
The long coat.
The silver necklace around her neck.
She remembered that necklace.
She had seen it years ago.
At family dinners.
At holiday gatherings.
At the Harrow estate.
“That’s Margaret Harrow.”
Reed looked at his notes.
“Daniel’s mother.”
Claire nodded slowly.
“She died eight years ago.”
The detective turned the photograph around.
“This footage was recorded three nights before your funeral.”
The room became silent again.
Noah looked between them.
“Does that mean she’s alive?”
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
But one thing was becoming clear.
The Harrow family had been hiding secrets for a very long time.
At the police station, Detective Reed ordered a full investigation into Margaret Harrow’s death.
The official report said she died from a sudden medical emergency.
The funeral was private.
The burial was closed.
No public viewing.
No independent witnesses.
Everything had been handled by the Harrow family.
Exactly like Claire’s funeral.
Reed stared at the files.
A pattern was forming.
Too many private funerals.
Too many missing women.
Too many unanswered questions.
Meanwhile, Daniel Harrow watched the news from his apartment.
The television showed Claire leaving the hospital.
Noah beside her.
The world now knew she survived.
The public believed Daniel was responsible.
But Daniel remained calm.
His phone rang.
He answered without looking at the screen.
“She knows.”
The voice on the other end was quiet.
“I warned you this would happen.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You were supposed to handle it.”
“I did.”
“No.”
Daniel looked at the television.
“You failed.”
A pause followed.
Then the voice spoke again.
“The boy changed everything.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Noah was never part of the plan.”
“Children notice things.”
Daniel walked toward the window.
“He is only ten.”
“And he already exposed you.”
Daniel ended the call.
For the first time, fear appeared on his face.
Not because of Claire.
Not because of the police.
Because of Noah.
Back at the Harrow mansion, Victoria searched through her mother’s old belongings.
She needed proof.
Something.
Anything.
That her family was not built on lies.
Inside an old jewelry box, she found a small envelope.
Her mother’s handwriting was on the front.
FOR VICTORIA.
Her hands shook as she opened it.
Inside was a letter.
My daughter,
If you are reading this, then the truth has finally returned.
Do not trust your brother.
Victoria stopped breathing.
She continued reading.
Daniel was never the person you believed he was.
Your father protected him.
I protected him.
And because of that, innocent people suffered.
Victoria sat down.
Her eyes filled with tears.
The woman who raised her had known.
Everyone had known.
Except her.
Then she found another item inside the envelope.
A photograph.
Three women stood together.
Elizabeth Harrow.
Emily Voss.
Claire Bell.
Victoria stared at the picture.
The three women had never met publicly.
But the photo proved something terrifying.
They were connected.
And someone had been watching them for years.
A sound came from downstairs.
Victoria quickly hid the photograph.
“Who’s there?”
No answer.
She slowly walked toward the staircase.
The mansion was silent.
Too silent.
Then she saw it.
A figure standing near the front door.
A woman.
Wearing a long dark coat.
Victoria froze.
The woman stepped into the light.
Victoria dropped the envelope.
“Mom?”
Margaret Harrow looked at her daughter.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Victoria could not move.
“You’re dead.”
Margaret’s expression remained cold.
“That was the only way I could survive.”
Victoria’s voice shook.
“Why?”
Margaret looked toward the upstairs hallway.
“Because I discovered what Daniel was doing.”
Victoria stared at her.
“What did he do?”
Margaret took a slow breath.
“The women.”
Victoria felt sick.
“How many?”
Margaret looked away.
“More than you know.”
“Why didn’t you stop him?”
The older woman’s eyes filled with regret.
“Because I helped create the monster.”
Victoria stepped backward.
“What does that mean?”
Margaret reached into her coat.
She pulled out a small notebook.
“This belonged to Daniel.”
Victoria stared at it.
“What is it?”
“The list.”
“What list?”
Margaret looked directly at her daughter.
“The names of every woman he wanted to disappear.”
At that moment, Victoria understood.
The conspiracy was not about one funeral.
It was not about Claire.
It was not even about Daniel.
It was about a secret that had survived for twelve years.
And now the person who knew the most had returned from the dead.
But before Victoria could ask another question, Margaret whispered something that made her blood run cold.
“Your brother is coming here.”
Victoria looked toward the front door.
“How do you know?”
Margaret’s face turned pale.
“Because I was the one who told him where to find me.”

The lights inside the mansion suddenly went out.
And somewhere outside, a car engine stopped.
