Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Remembered the Night She Disappeared

Claire Bell woke up from a nightmare before sunrise.

For several seconds, she did not know where she was.

The hospital room was dark.

The machines beside her bed made quiet beeping sounds.

The white curtains moved slightly from the cold air coming through the window.

Then she remembered.

The casket.

The tape.

The darkness.

The sound of her son’s voice.

“Mom!”

Claire closed her eyes.

That single word was the reason she was alive.

Noah had refused to accept what every adult told him.

He believed her when nobody else did.

A soft knock came from the door.

Claire opened her eyes.

Detective Marcus Reed stepped inside.

“You should be resting.”

Claire looked toward the empty chair beside her bed.

“Noah?”

“He’s with a nurse.”

She nodded.

“He hasn’t left my side.”

Reed sat down.

“That tells me something important.”

“What?”

“Your son knew something was wrong before anyone else.”

Claire looked down at her hands.

“He always trusted his feelings.”

“Children notice more than people think.”

The detective placed a small evidence bag on the table.

Inside was a piece of gray material.

Claire immediately recognized it.

The tape.

Her face became pale.

“We found traces of fingerprints.”

“Whose?”

“We are still testing them.”

Claire looked at him.

“But you already have a suspicion.”

Reed did not answer.

That was an answer by itself.

“Daniel?”

The detective slowly leaned back.

“Your husband has refused to explain several things.”

Claire stared at the floor.

“He always had an explanation.”

“What do you mean?”

“He could make anything sound reasonable.”

Reed opened his notebook.

“Tell me about your marriage.”

Claire hesitated.

For years, she had defended Daniel.

She had defended him to friends.

To family.

Even to herself.

But now, every memory looked different.

“When we first met, he was different.”

“How?”

“Kind.”

“Generous.”

“He made me feel safe.”

Reed wrote something down.

“And later?”

Claire looked toward the window.

“Later, he became someone I didn’t recognize.”

“What changed?”

“He started controlling everything.”

“Money.”

“Schedules.”

“Who I talked to.”

The detective looked up.

“Did you ever feel afraid?”

Claire remained silent.

Then she whispered.

“Yes.”

At that moment, the hospital room door opened.

Noah walked in carrying a small backpack.

“Mom?”

Claire immediately reached for him.

He ran to the bed.

She hugged him tightly.

“I’m sorry.”

Noah pulled back.

“Why?”

“Because you were scared.”

He shook his head.

“I wasn’t scared.”

Claire looked surprised.

“Then what were you?”

Noah thought for a moment.

“Angry.”

Detective Reed watched him carefully.

“Why angry?”

“Because nobody listened.”

The room became quiet.

Noah opened his backpack.

“I brought this.”

He pulled out a small notebook.

Claire recognized it.

It belonged to her.

“Where did you get that?”

“Your office.”

Claire looked confused.

“I thought Daniel threw everything away.”

“He missed it.”

Noah opened the notebook.

Several pages were filled with Claire’s handwriting.

But some pages had been ripped out.

Detective Reed looked closer.

“What was written here?”

Claire touched the empty space.

“I don’t know.”

Then something caught her attention.

A sentence written near the bottom of the page.

Only three words remained.

THE SECOND DOOR.

Claire froze.

Her breathing changed.

Detective Reed noticed immediately.

“You know that phrase.”

Claire looked terrified.

“I heard it before.”

“When?”

“Before I disappeared.”

The detective leaned closer.

“Where?”

Claire closed her eyes.

The memory came back slowly.

A dark hallway.

A locked room.

Daniel’s voice.

And another voice.

A woman.

She opened her eyes.

“There was someone else there.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“But she was arguing with Daniel.”

“What were they saying?”

Claire swallowed.

“She told him it was too late.”

Detective Reed waited.

“And Daniel said something.”

“What?”

Claire’s hands began shaking.

“He said…”

She stopped.

The memory was painful.

“Say it.”

Claire looked at Noah.

Then back at the detective.

“He said…”

“Claire will disappear just like the others.”

Nobody spoke.

Because those words changed everything.

The others.

Not another victim.

Not an accident.

A pattern.

Detective Reed stood immediately.

“Mrs. Bell, I need you to answer one more question.”

Claire looked up.

“What?”

“Who are the others?”

Claire’s face turned white.

Because deep inside her mind, a forgotten memory was returning.

A memory Daniel had tried to bury.

A memory involving another woman.

A woman who vanished five years earlier.

A woman whose name Claire suddenly remembered.

Emily Voss.

And the terrifying truth was this.

Emily had been Daniel Harrow’s first secret.
