Chapter 7 - The Wife Before Claire

Chapter 7 - The Wife Before Claire

The name of Daniel Harrow’s first wife appeared in the investigation file like a ghost from the past.

Elizabeth Harrow.

A woman who vanished twelve years earlier.

A woman whose disappearance was never solved.

A woman whose name had been removed from almost every record connected to Daniel’s life.

Detective Marcus Reed placed the file on the hospital table.

Claire stared at the photograph.

The woman in the picture looked elegant.

Confident.

Happy.

She had the same kind of smile Claire remembered having years ago.

Before fear entered her marriage.

Before secrets replaced trust.

“That’s impossible.”

Claire whispered the words.

Reed looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because Daniel told me he was never married before.”

Noah looked confused.

“Dad lied?”

Claire did not answer.

Because she already knew.

The truth was worse.

Daniel had not simply hidden information.

He had erased an entire person.

Detective Reed opened the old case file.

“Elizabeth Harrow disappeared three years after marrying Daniel.”

“What happened?”

“She was reported missing.”

“By Daniel?”

Reed paused.

“No.”

Claire immediately noticed.

“Then who reported her?”

The detective looked down.

“Her sister.”

The room became quiet.

“Daniel told police Elizabeth abandoned him.”

Claire shook her head.

“She would never do that.”

“You knew her?”

“No.”

Claire looked at the photograph again.

“But I know people.”

Reed studied her.

“What does that mean?”

Claire touched the picture.

“Someone who loves a person doesn’t disappear without leaving anything behind.”

Noah moved closer to his mother.

“Is she like you?”

Claire looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

“She disappeared too.”

The words were simple.

But they hurt.

Because Noah was right.

At the Harrow mansion, Victoria sat across from Laura Bennett.

The woman who had spent five years searching for answers.

Victoria held the old letter from Emily.

“Why did you come to me?”

Laura looked exhausted.

“Because Claire survived.”

Victoria frowned.

“What does that change?”

“Everything.”

Laura looked toward the window.

“For years, I thought Daniel had won.”

“Won what?”

“The ability to make people forget.”

Victoria remained silent.

Laura continued.

“Emily found records.”

“What records?”

“Financial transfers.”

“Private payments.”

“Names of women.”

Victoria felt cold.

“What women?”

Laura looked directly at her.

“Women who worked for Daniel.”

A long silence followed.

“Are you saying he hurt them?”

“I’m saying every woman who got too close to the truth disappeared.”

Victoria looked away.

She wanted to reject the idea.

She wanted to believe her brother was still the person she grew up with.

But memories were changing.

Small moments.

Strange conversations.

Things she ignored.

Things that suddenly made sense.

Then her phone rang.

The number was unknown.

Victoria answered carefully.

“Hello?”

Nobody spoke.

Only breathing.

Then a voice whispered.

“Stop digging.”

Victoria froze.

“Who is this?”

The call ended.

Laura watched her face.

“Was it him?”

Victoria slowly lowered the phone.

“I don’t know.”

But she did.

Deep down, she knew.

At the hospital, Detective Reed received another update.

The forensic team had finished examining the hidden room.

The results were disturbing.

They found traces of multiple people.

Not just Claire.

Not just one victim.

Several.

Reed walked back into Claire’s room.

His expression told her everything.

“What did you find?”

He hesitated.

“Your husband’s hidden room was used more than once.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“How many?”

“We don’t know yet.”

Noah grabbed his mother’s hand.

Detective Reed looked at the boy.

Then at Claire.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“The night you disappeared…”

He stopped.

Claire waited.

“Someone entered the Harrow mansion before you were taken.”

“Who?”

Reed placed a photograph on the table.

It showed a security camera image.

A person walking through the front gate.

The face was unclear.

But the clothing was familiar.

Claire looked closer.

Then her entire body froze.

“No.”

Reed watched her reaction.

“You know this person?”

Claire could barely speak.

“That’s impossible.”

“Who is it?”

Claire pointed at the photograph.

Her hand trembled.

“That’s Daniel’s mother.”

Everyone became silent.

Because Daniel’s mother had been declared dead eight years earlier.

But the security footage showed something impossible.

She had entered the Harrow mansion the night Claire disappeared.

And she was not alone.

Someone was walking beside her.

Someone whose face had been carefully hidden.

May you like

Someone Claire had seen before.

The person who helped bury her alive.
