Chapter 14 - The Person Who Built the Game

Chapter 14 - The Person Who Built the Game

The name on the paper changed everything.

Nobody in the hospital room spoke for several seconds.

The air felt heavier.

Like the truth itself had entered the room.

Claire looked at Victoria.

“You know who this is.”

Victoria stared at the faded name.

Her face had lost all emotion.

“Yes.”

Detective Marcus Reed stepped closer.

“Who?”

Victoria slowly looked up.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“Charles Harrow.”

Claire frowned.

“Daniel’s father?”

Victoria nodded.

“The man everyone believed died twelve years ago.”

The detective immediately opened his notebook.

“But official records show Charles Harrow died from a heart attack.”

Victoria looked away.

“That is what the family reported.”

Claire felt a chill.

“Another fake death.”

Nobody answered.

Because everyone already knew.

The Harrow family was built on secrets.

At the police station, Detective Reed searched through old records.

Charles Harrow.

Founder of Harrow International.

A billionaire businessman.

A respected philanthropist.

A man praised by politicians and community leaders.

But behind the public image was another story.

Private lawsuits.

Confidential settlements.

Missing documents.

Witnesses who suddenly changed their statements.

Reed stared at the screen.

“Everyone looked at Daniel.”

An officer beside him nodded.

“But Daniel was following someone else.”

Reed leaned back.

“The son was never the beginning.”

“He was the student.”

Meanwhile, Claire returned to the Harrow mansion for the first time since her rescue.

She did not want to go.

Every room carried memories.

The dining room where Daniel smiled at guests.

The living room where he told her everything was fine.

The hallway where she once believed she was safe.

Now every corner felt like a trap.

Noah walked beside her.

“Are you okay?”

Claire looked down at him.

“I’m trying.”

Noah squeezed her hand.

“That’s what you told me.”

She smiled sadly.

“You remember everything.”

“I listen.”

They entered Daniel’s office.

Detective Reed had already searched the room.

But Claire noticed something.

A painting on the wall.

She remembered seeing it many times.

A family portrait.

Charles.

Daniel.

Victoria.

Margaret.

Everyone smiling.

But something was wrong.

Claire stepped closer.

“Wait.”

Reed turned.

“What?”

She touched the frame.

“This was moved.”

The detective looked surprised.

“How do you know?”

“Because Daniel hated this painting.”

“Why?”

“He said his father made him look weak.”

The officers removed the painting.

Behind it was a hidden compartment.

Inside was a small black box.

No one spoke.

Because they had seen this before.

The same type of box Noah saw the night Claire disappeared.

Detective Reed opened it carefully.

Inside were old photographs.

Letters.

And a journal.

The first page contained a single sentence.

MY SON MUST LEARN CONTROL.

Claire felt sick.

She turned the page.

The journal belonged to Charles Harrow.

It described Daniel’s childhood.

His training.

His obsession with power.

His belief that emotions were weaknesses.

Then Claire found a page marked with her name.

CLAIRE BELL.

Her hands trembled.

She began reading.

“Thomas Bell’s daughter is exactly what I expected.”

“She is intelligent.”

“She is stubborn.”

“She asks too many questions.”

Claire stopped.

Detective Reed looked at her.

“Keep going.”

She continued.

“That is why Daniel must be careful.”

The next sentence made her freeze.

“She has inherited her father’s curiosity.”

Claire looked up.

“He knew my father.”

Reed nodded.

The journal revealed something even worse.

Charles had been watching Claire long before she married Daniel.

He knew who she was.

He knew her family history.

He knew Thomas Bell was investigating him.

And he knew Claire would eventually discover the truth.

The final page was dated three days before Claire disappeared.

Charles wrote:

“Daniel believes he controls the situation.”

“He does not understand.”

“The strongest players never appear on the board.”

Victoria read over Claire’s shoulder.

Then she whispered.

“He was still alive.”

Everyone looked at her.

“What?”

Victoria pointed to the date.

“Charles wrote this after his supposed death.”

Detective Reed immediately understood.

Charles Harrow had faked his own death.

But why?

A sound suddenly came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

A figure stood at the end of the corridor.

An older man.

Wearing a dark suit.

Holding a cane.

The room went silent.

Victoria stepped backward.

“No.”

Claire stared.

Because she recognized him from the journal photographs.

The man who created the secrets.

The man who controlled Daniel.

The man who started everything.

Charles Harrow smiled.

“Hello, Victoria.”

Nobody moved.

Detective Reed reached for his weapon.

“Charles Harrow.”

The old man looked amused.

“I was wondering how long it would take.”

Claire stared at him.

“You’re alive.”

Charles looked at her.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“And you were never supposed to survive.”

Noah moved closer to his mother.

Claire held his hand.

Charles looked at the boy.

The same boy who broke the casket.

The same boy who exposed everything.

Then he smiled.

“Interesting.”

“What?”

Charles looked at Noah.

“You are the only person who was never part of my plan.”

The room became silent.

Because for the first time, Charles Harrow admitted something.

He had planned everything.

Except one thing.

A child who refused to stop knocking.
