Chapter 10 - The Person Waiting Beneath the House

Chapter 10 - The Person Waiting Beneath the House

The voice from the basement echoed through the Harrow mansion.

Everyone froze.

Victoria looked toward the stairs.

Daniel looked toward the basement door.

Margaret Harrow’s face changed instantly.

For the first time since returning from the dead, she looked afraid.

Victoria noticed.

“You know who that is.”

Margaret did not answer.

“Mom.”

A long silence followed.

Then Margaret whispered.

“Yes.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Stay away from her.”

Victoria turned sharply.

The warning in his voice was different.

It was not anger.

It was fear.

And that frightened her more.

“Daniel.”

The voice from the basement called again.

“Come downstairs.”

Nobody moved.

The mansion felt like it was holding its breath.

Detective Marcus Reed arrived twenty minutes later after receiving Victoria’s emergency call.

By the time police entered the property, the basement door was open.

But the person who had been waiting below was gone.

Only one thing remained.

A message written on the basement wall.

YOU NEVER BURIED THE TRUTH.

Detective Reed stared at the words.

“This person wanted us to find this.”

Victoria nodded.

“They wanted everyone to know.”

Reed looked around the room.

“Where is Daniel?”

Victoria’s face became serious.

“He disappeared.”

The detective immediately looked toward the officers.

“Find him.”

At the hospital, Claire watched the breaking news.

The reporter stood outside the Harrow mansion.

“Authorities are now investigating a possible connection between Daniel Harrow and multiple historical disappearances.”

Claire turned off the television.

She did not need to hear more.

She already knew.

Her life with Daniel had been built on a lie.

Noah sat beside her.

“Are they going to catch him?”

Claire looked at her son.

“I don’t know.”

Noah was quiet.

Then he asked the question she feared.

“Did Dad try to kill you?”

Claire looked away.

She did not want to destroy the image of his father.

But she could not protect a lie anymore.

“I don’t know everything yet.”

Noah nodded slowly.

“But you know something.”

Claire looked at him.

“Yes.”

“What?”

She took his hand.

“I know you saved my life.”

The boy looked down.

“I just listened.”

Claire smiled sadly.

“Sometimes listening is the bravest thing someone can do.”

Back at the Harrow estate, Detective Reed discovered something hidden behind the basement wall.

A metal box.

Old.

Rusty.

Locked.

The silver key from the hidden room opened it.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Medical records.

Photographs.

Letters.

And a recording device.

Reed picked it up carefully.

“Someone wanted this found.”

Victoria stood beside him.

“What’s on it?”

The detective pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a woman’s voice appeared.

Weak.

Scared.

But recognizable.

Elizabeth Harrow.

“If someone finds this…”

The recording stopped for a moment.

Then continued.

“Daniel knows I discovered the truth.”

Victoria covered her mouth.

Elizabeth’s voice continued.

“He has been using the house for years.”

“Women come here because they trust him.”

“But they leave as strangers.”

Detective Reed looked at Victoria.

The recording continued.

“He tells everyone they leave willingly.”

“He tells everyone they are unstable.”

“But they are not.”

A sound appeared in the background.

A door opening.

Elizabeth became quiet.

Then whispered.

“He’s here.”

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Because they had just heard the voice of a woman who had been missing for twelve years.

And she had left behind proof.

Proof that Daniel was not hiding one crime.

He was hiding an entire system.

Detective Reed picked up another document.

His expression changed.

“What?”

Victoria looked at him.

“What did you find?”

He handed her the paper.

It was a hospital record.

The patient name was Elizabeth Harrow.

But the date was recent.

Three months ago.

Victoria stared at it.

“She was alive.”

Reed nodded.

“And someone was treating her.”

Claire’s phone suddenly rang at the hospital.

Unknown number.

She looked at the screen.

Nobody spoke.

Then she answered.

“Hello?”

A woman’s voice came through.

Quiet.

Broken.

“Claire…”

Claire froze.

Because she recognized the voice.

“Elizabeth?”

A pause.

Then a whisper.

“Daniel is not the person you should be afraid of.”

Claire’s heart raced.

“What do you mean?”

The woman on the phone started crying.

“Because Daniel was protecting someone.”

Claire sat up.

“Who?”

The answer came softly.

But it changed everything.

“Your father.”

The call ended.

Claire stared at the phone.

Her father had been dead for fifteen years.

At that moment, Detective Reed received another message.

A photo.

Attached was a single sentence.

THE FIRST SECRET WAS NEVER DANIEL’S.

May you like

It was someone else’s.

And now Claire had to uncover a truth buried long before she ever met Daniel Harrow.
