Chapter 7: The Boardroom Coup

The boardroom of Sterling Enterprises, located on the eightieth floor of a glittering Manhattan skyscraper, smelled of expensive leather, nervous sweat, and predatory ambition. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city lights flickered against the dark, rainy sky.

Arthur Sterling stood at the head of the massive mahogany table. The twelve members of the board of directors sat in uneasy silence.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we are facing an unprecedented public relations disaster," Arthur began, his voice dripping with faux sorrow. "Julian's horrific lapse in judgment—attempting to marry a woman from the slums, the subsequent breakdown of my dear sister-in-law Eleanor, and this absurd, frankly sickening rumor that this gold-digger is our lost Arabella—has tanked our stock by twelve percent in three hours."

An older board member, Harrison, frowned. "Is there any truth to the rumor, Arthur? The press is having a field day."

"It is a lie manufactured by the girl to extort us," Arthur lied smoothly, not missing a beat. "Julian is blinded by infatuation. Eleanor is incapacitated by a cardiac event. Therefore, under Article 4 of our bylaws, I propose a vote to temporarily strip Julian of his CEO title and name me acting Chairman until this crisis is averted."

Murmurs of agreement rippled through the room. The board cared about one thing: profits. And Arthur represented stability.

"All in favor of my appointment?" Arthur asked, raising his hand.

Slowly, one by one, the board members began to raise their hands. Arthur’s lips curved into a triumphant, venomous smile. He had won. The empire was finally his.

Bang.

The heavy mahogany double doors of the boardroom were thrown open with such force that they crashed against the walls.

Arthur’s smile vanished.

Standing in the doorway was Julian Sterling, looking every inch the ruthless CEO he was trained to be. But the board wasn't looking at him. They were staring at the woman walking beside him.

Maya wore a sharp, tailored crimson power suit that belonged to Eleanor. Her hair was pulled back into a sleek, elegant knot, and her makeup was flawless, accentuating her sharp cheekbones and piercing eyes. Around her neck, resting prominently against her collarbone, was the custom jade pendant. She looked lethal. She looked like royalty.

"Put your hands down," Julian ordered, his voice echoing in the cavernous room. "This meeting is illegal, and this vote is null and void."

"Security!" Arthur shouted, his face reddening. "Remove this woman from the building immediately!"

"Try it, and I'll have you arrested for assaulting the primary shareholder of this company," Maya said, her voice crisp and commanding. She walked right up to the table, slamming a thick stack of papers down onto the polished wood.

Harrison leaned forward, adjusting his glasses. "What is the meaning of this? Who are you?"

"My name is Arabella Sterling," Maya said, looking Harrison dead in the eye before turning her gaze to the rest of the room. "And those are certified DNA results from Mount Sinai Hospital, timestamped one hour ago. I am the biological daughter of Eleanor and Richard Sterling."

The boardroom erupted into chaos. Men shouted, papers were snatched up, and Arthur stood frozen, his face draining of color.

"It's a forgery!" Arthur roared over the noise. "She’s a fraud!"

"The head of genetics at Mount Sinai is on standby to take your call, Harrison," Julian said smoothly, sliding a phone across the table. "Make the call. Verify it."

Harrison made the call on speakerphone. In less than two minutes, the board had their confirmation. The lost princess was alive, and she was standing right in front of them.

"Under the terms of my late father’s trust," Maya announced, her voice cutting through the remaining whispers, "the biological heir inherits sixty percent of the voting shares upon their twenty-fifth birthday. I turned twenty-five last month."

She turned her head slowly, locking her eyes onto Arthur’s terrified face. "You don't have the votes to oust Julian. Because as of tonight, I own this company. And my first act as majority shareholder is to officially appoint Julian Sterling as permanent CEO."

Arthur’s hands shook as he gripped the edge of the table. He leaned in, his voice dropping to a hiss meant only for her. "You think you've won, you little street rat? You have no idea what you've just stepped into."

"I know exactly what I've stepped into, Arthur," Maya whispered back, a cold fire in her eyes. "I stepped into a war. And I’m going to bury you."
