Chapter 15: The Vow in the Ruins

The fallout was biblical. By sunset, Harrison was in federal custody, charged with conspiracy to commit murder, corporate espionage, and a laundry list of financial crimes. The Vance Syndicate, a rival real estate family that had been silently backing Harrison, was under immediate FBI investigation.

The cancer that had eaten away at the Sterling family for twenty-four years had finally been cut out.

That night, Julian and Maya stood on the terrace of the penthouse, looking out over the glittering skyline of Manhattan. The rain had cleared, leaving a crisp, cool night sky.

Maya leaned her uninjured shoulder against Julian’s chest, exhausted to her very bones but feeling lighter than she had in her entire life. The ghosts of her past had finally been laid to rest.

“It’s over,” Maya whispered, watching the headlights of the cars far below.

“The war is over,” Julian agreed, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on the top of her head. “The company is secure. Eleanor is safe. And Arthur and Harrison are going to rot in prison.”

He gently turned her around so she was facing him. The city lights cast a golden glow over his handsome, chiseled face. He looked at her with a reverence that made her heart ache.

“When I got that call today... when I heard the crash over the phone...” Julian’s voice broke. He took a shuddering breath. “Maya, I realized that all the money, the power, the titles... none of it means a damn thing if you aren't here. I don't want to just be your business partner. I don't want to just be your lover.”

Julian slowly dropped to one knee.

Maya gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.

Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. He flipped it open. Inside rested a breathtaking diamond ring, flanked by two perfect emerald-cut jade stones—a tribute to the pendant that had brought them together.

“Maya, you are the strongest, most incredible woman I have ever known,” Julian said, looking up at her with tears in his eyes. “You took a broken family and made it whole. You took a man who didn't know how to love and gave him a soul. Will you marry me? For real this time. Without the lies, without the secrets. Just you and me, against the world.”

“Yes,” Maya sobbed, laughing through her tears. “Yes, Julian, of course yes.”

Julian slipped the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly. He stood up and pulled her into a passionate, soul-stirring kiss.

As they broke apart, Julian rested his forehead against hers. “Tomorrow, we start planning the wedding. A real wedding. And this time, if Eleanor even looks at your dress funny, I’m locking her in the wine cellar.”

Maya laughed, a genuine, bell-like sound that echoed into the night.

But down in the city, in the dark interrogation room of the FBI headquarters, Harrison sat silently across from a federal agent. He hadn't said a word since his arrest.

The agent tossed a photo of Maya and Julian onto the metal table. “It’s over, Harrison. Give us the Vances, and we might keep you out of solitary.”

Harrison looked at the photo of the happy couple. A slow, sinister smile crept across his wrinkled face.

“You think it’s over?” Harrison whispered, his voice dry as dust. “I didn't try to kill the girl today. The Vances didn't try to kill her. We needed her alive to keep the stock volatile.”

The federal agent frowned. “Then who cut her brakes?”

Harrison chuckled, a dark, wheezing sound. “You fools. You excised the tumor, but you missed the disease. Arabella Sterling’s biological father didn't die of a heart attack twenty years ago. And he’s coming back for what’s his.”
