Chapter 1: The Sound of Shattered Marble

The clinking sound of the jade pendant hitting the pristine white marble of the cathedral floor wasn't loud, but in the suffocating silence of the room, it rang out like a gunshot.
A collective gasp rippled through the six hundred guests. These were the elites of Manhattan—senators, CEOs, and socialites who had come to witness the wedding of Julian Sterling, heir to the Sterling empire, and Maya, a girl from the wrong side of the tracks whom the matriarch, Eleanor Sterling, openly despised.
A moment ago, the cathedral had been the stage for the ultimate humiliation. Eleanor, breathing heavily, her designer gown violently contrasting with the chaotic fury in her eyes, had just torn Maya’s vintage lace wedding dress right down the bodice. It was meant to be the final blow to break the girl’s spirit.
But now, Eleanor wasn’t looking at the ruined silk. She was staring fixedly at the small, intricately carved green stone resting at Maya’s feet.
Eleanor’s perfectly manicured hands began to tremble. The color drained from her face, leaving her looking like a ghost beneath her immaculate makeup. "Where..." Her voice was a ragged whisper that echoed through the microphone clipped to the priest's robes. "Where did you get that?"
Maya, shivering in the draft of the massive cathedral, crossed her arms to cover her exposed skin. Tears of profound humiliation threatened to spill, but years of surviving on her own had forged her spine out of steel. She refused to cry in front of this monster. She slowly bent down, her fingers grazing the cool marble, and picked up the jade pendant.
"I asked you a question!" Eleanor shrieked, taking a sudden step forward. Her knees wobbled. She looked entirely unhinged.
Julian, recovering from the initial shock of his mother’s violent outburst, immediately stepped between them. He ripped off his tailored tuxedo jacket and draped it over Maya’s shoulders, wrapping his arms around her protectively. His jaw was set in rigid fury. "That is enough, Mother! Have you lost your mind? You’ve ruined the wedding. You’ve humiliated the woman I love. Are you happy now?"
"Julian, move," Eleanor gasped, clutching her chest. Her eyes never left the pendant dangling from its worn silver chain in Maya’s hand.
"I won't let you near her," Julian growled, his voice vibrating with protective rage.
"I've worn this since I was a little girl," Maya said, her voice shaking but defiant. She clutched the jade to her heart. "It was the only thing I had when the orphanage took me in. The sisters said it was around my neck when I was found in the storm. It’s mine. You can’t take this away from me, too."
Eleanor let out a sound that wasn't human—a guttural, agonizing wail of a wounded animal. Before anyone could react, the formidable, untouchable billionaire matriarch collapsed to her knees right there on the altar.
"My baby," Eleanor sobbed, her hands reaching out into the empty air toward Maya. "My little girl... Arabella."
The entire ballroom froze. Cell phones, previously lowered in shock, were suddenly raised again. Flashes went off. Whispers erupted into a deafening roar of gossip.
Julian stiffened, his protective grip on Maya loosening just a fraction in sheer bewilderment. He looked down at his mother, a woman who had never shed a single tear in her life, sobbing on the floor. Then, he looked at Maya.
May you like
"Arabella?" Julian whispered, the name tasting like ash on his tongue. It was a ghost’s name. The name of the biological Sterling daughter who had been kidnapped twenty-four years ago and presumed dead.
Maya stared at the weeping woman, a cold dread washing over her. The woman she had spent years despising, the woman who had just violently ripped her dress to prove she wasn't worthy of the Sterling family... was her mother.
