Chapter 20: The Vow of the Queen

The silence in the room was deafening, broken only by the distant, muffled sound of the string quartet playing downstairs.
Maya looked at Richard’s outstretched hand, then at the silenced pistol aimed carelessly in Julian’s direction. Her biological father. A man who viewed his family as nothing more than pieces on a chessboard.
"You think you hold all the cards," Maya said, stepping out from behind Eleanor. She didn't reach for the transfer papers sitting on the vanity. Instead, she locked eyes with Richard, her gaze absolute zero.
"I know I do," Richard smiled confidently. "I am the architect of this family. I gave you life, and I gave Julian his position. You are nothing without me."
"You gave me life, and then you left me in an orphanage during a hurricane while your brother hunted me," Maya corrected, her voice echoing with dangerous power. "You gave Julian a title, but you never gave him a father. You built a company on fraud, cowardice, and lies."
She reached up and slowly unclasped the jade pendant from her neck. The stone that had identified her, the stone that had exposed the family’s greatest secret.
"We didn't sign the papers, Richard," Maya said.
Richard’s confident smile vanished. His eyes narrowed, and he raised the pistol, aiming it directly at Maya’s chest. "Do not test me, Arabella. I will shoot you and force Eleanor to sign her shares over. Do not make me ruin this dress."
"Shoot me," Maya challenged, taking a step forward.
"Maya, stop!" Julian yelled, his finger tightening on his trigger, but he couldn't fire without risking Richard getting a shot off at Maya.
"He won't do it," Maya said, her eyes never leaving Richard’s. "Because if he kills me, he has no leverage. He’s a coward. He’s always been a coward."
Richard let out a snarl of rage and fired.
Thwip.
The bullet struck Maya square in the chest. The impact threw her backward, but Julian caught her, spinning them both to the floor.
Eleanor screamed, lunging forward, but before Richard could aim again, the glass of the bedroom window shattered inward.
Two FBI snipers, stationed on the roof of the adjacent guest house, had finally gotten a clear visual. The first shot blew the gun out of Richard’s hand, taking two of his fingers with it. The second shot hit him in the kneecap.
Richard collapsed to the floor, howling in agony as his white tuxedo instantly soaked with blood.
Within seconds, the bedroom door was kicked open. Agent Vance and a tactical team swarmed the room, pinning the screaming billionaire to the carpet and slapping heavy iron cuffs on his wrists.
Julian was on the floor, frantically searching Maya for blood. "Maya! Maya, look at me!"
Maya groaned, sitting up slowly. She reached into the bodice of her silk dress and pulled out the flattened, deformed bullet that had embedded itself in the hidden Kevlar plating. She tossed it onto the floor next to Richard’s face.
"Checkmate," Maya breathed, leaning into Julian’s chest as he wrapped his arms around her, burying his face in her hair, shaking uncontrollably.
"You brilliant, reckless idiot," Julian choked out, kissing her forehead, her cheeks, her lips. "Don't you ever do that again."
Eleanor walked over to where Richard lay bleeding on the floor. She looked down at the man she had wept for, the man who had destroyed her family.
"You are a ghost, Richard," Eleanor said coldly. "And tomorrow, the world will forget you ever existed." She turned her back on him as the FBI dragged him out of the room.
Two weeks later, the cathedral in Manhattan was filled with sunlight. There were no cameras, no press, and no uninvited guests. Only family, true friends, and the people who had stood by them through the fire.
Maya walked down the aisle, not in vintage lace, but in a breathtaking, custom gown of pure white silk. She carried a bouquet of orchids, and around her neck, resting over her heart, was the jade pendant.
Julian stood at the altar, tears shining in his eyes as he watched her approach. There was no matriarch to stop them, no ghosts to haunt them.
As Maya took Julian’s hands, the priest smiled. "Do you, Julian, take this woman..."
"I do," Julian said, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. "In this life, and whatever comes next."
Maya smiled, a radiant, victorious smile. She had walked into this church as a humiliated outcast, and she was leaving it as a queen.
May you like
"I do," Maya whispered, sealing her vow.
The sound of their kiss was the only thing that echoed through the marble cathedral, finally burying the lies of the past, and cementing the legacy of the Sterling Empire forever.
