Chapter 10: The Gala of Deception

The Plaza Hotel was a fortress of flashing cameras, diamond-drenched socialites, and hungry journalists. The ballroom was draped in gold and white silk, but beneath the opulent surface, a deadly game of chess was being played.
Eleanor stood at the top of the grand staircase, looking like a queen going to war. She wore a magnificent black velvet gown, her diamonds glittering under the chandeliers. She was holding court, smoothly dismissing the rumors to eager reporters with the practiced ease of a woman who had survived decades of high-society warfare.
Down in the city, Julian and Maya were running out of time.
They had spent the entire day tracing the origin of the brass key. Thanks to a discreet antique dealer Julian knew, they identified it as a safe deposit box key from a defunct, private bank in the Bronx that had been bought out by a larger conglomerate ten years ago.
It took Julian three hours, a massive bribe, and heavily armed persuasion to get the current bank manager to let them access the ancient underground vaults.
At 7:00 PM, while the gala was starting, Maya turned the brass key in the lock of Box 402. The mechanism clicked with a heavy, satisfying sound.
Inside the long metal box was a single, dust-covered manila envelope.
Maya’s hands shook as she opened it. Inside was a cassette tape, a handwritten letter on faded stationary, and a terrifyingly clear photograph. The photo showed a much younger Arthur Sterling handing a massive duffel bag of cash to a man with a heavily scarred face—a known hitman who had died in a shootout twenty years ago.
Julian unfolded the letter, his eyes rapidly scanning the cramped handwriting of Clara, the nanny.
If you are reading this, I am dead, the letter began. Arthur Sterling paid me to unlock the nursery window so his men could take the baby. He wanted her dead so he could inherit the company. But when the man came, I couldn't let him kill an innocent child. I took her. I ran. I dropped her at Saint Jude's orphanage. Arthur is hunting me. I have recorded a confession tape of him outlining the entire plot. Whoever finds this, bring Arthur to justice. Save the little girl.
Maya let out a choked gasp, tears blurring her vision. Clara had been a pawn, but in the end, she gave her life to save Maya’s.
"We have him," Julian whispered, a vicious, triumphant smile spreading across his face. "We finally have the bastard."
"We need to get this to Eleanor at the gala," Maya said, grabbing the envelope. "We expose him tonight. In front of everyone."
They raced back to Manhattan, the SUV weaving recklessly through traffic. When they arrived at the Plaza, Julian’s security detail flanked them, forming a human wall as they pushed through the crowd of reporters outside.
Inside the ballroom, Arthur was standing by the champagne fountain, looking incredibly smug as he spoke to the Chief of Police. He was finalizing his takeover, entirely unaware that the ghost of his past had just walked through the front doors.
Maya spotted Eleanor across the room and nodded. The signal.
Eleanor elegantly tapped her spoon against her crystal champagne flute. The sharp, clear ringing cut through the chatter, bringing the massive ballroom to a dead halt.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Eleanor’s voice projected beautifully through the microphone. "Thank you for coming. Today, there have been vicious, cowardly rumors spread about my family. Rumors designed by a traitor to steal our legacy."
Arthur’s smug smile faltered. He looked around, suddenly realizing that Julian’s security men were quietly locking the ballroom doors.
"Tonight," Eleanor continued, her eyes locking onto Arthur with the intensity of a sniper. "I will not only introduce you to my true, biological daughter, Arabella Sterling. But we will also be handing over evidence to the District Attorney, proving exactly who kidnapped her twenty-four years ago."
The crowd erupted into shocked whispers.
Arthur’s face went chalk white. He looked toward the entrance and saw Maya and Julian standing there. Julian was holding up a manila envelope, staring at Arthur with a promise of absolute destruction.
Panic, raw and animalistic, overtook Arthur. He realized he was trapped. In a sudden, desperate move, he grabbed a heavy glass champagne bottle from the table, smashed the bottom off, and lunged toward the closest person to him—Eleanor.

"If I go down," Arthur screamed, his polished facade completely shattered as he grabbed Eleanor by the neck, holding the jagged glass to her throat. "I'm taking the Queen with me!"
The ballroom erupted in screams, but Maya and Julian were already running.
