Chapter 2: The Replacement Child

"Clear the cathedral! Now!"
The thunderous voice of Arthur Sterling, Eleanor’s brother-in-law, boomed over the crowd. Security guards, previously paralyzed by the unfolding soap opera, snapped into action. They began herding the protesting, whispering elite out of the heavy oak doors.
Up on the altar, the world had shrunk to just three people.
Maya stepped back, clutching Julian’s jacket tighter around her body. Her mind was spinning, rejecting the reality in front of her. No. It’s a trick. It’s another one of her sick mind games to get me away from Julian.
But the raw, devastating agony in Eleanor’s eyes was impossible to fake.
"Let me look at you," Eleanor begged, trying to crawl forward on the marble. Her expensive silk dress dragged on the floor, ruining the fabric, but she didn’t care. "Please, let me look at you. The jade... it was custom-made in Hong Kong. There isn’t another one like it in the world. It has the Sterling crest carved into the back of the dragon."
Maya instinctively turned the pendant over. There, worn down by years of friction against her chest, was a faint engraving of a falcon clutching a diamond—the Sterling family crest.
"You..." Maya choked on the word, taking another step back until she hit the cold stone of the altar. "You paid a private investigator to look into my background last year. You told me I was trash. You said my bloodline was polluted!"
Eleanor winced as if she had been slapped. "I didn't know! The file said your parents were drug addicts who abandoned you. It was a fabricated file!"
"And you believed it because it suited your narrative," Julian said, his voice deadly quiet.
Eleanor finally looked at her son. Or rather, the man she had called her son for twenty-three years. Julian’s face was pale, his eyes wide with a realization that was slowly breaking his heart.
Julian wasn't a Sterling by blood. When Arabella was taken, Eleanor had fallen into a deep, suicidal depression. To save her life, her late husband had adopted a blue-eyed, dark-haired boy from a prestigious agency, raising him to be the perfect heir. Julian had spent his entire life trying to be enough, trying to fill the void of the ghost sister he never met.
"If she is Arabella..." Julian’s voice cracked. "Then I am marrying my sister."
"No!" Eleanor screamed, panicking. "You aren't related! You don't share a drop of blood! But... but you cannot marry! The press, the scandal, the board of directors... You are siblings in the eyes of the law!"
Maya let out a bitter, dark laugh. The sound was so devoid of joy that it made Julian shiver.
"Siblings," Maya spat, her eyes flashing with a sudden, terrifying anger. She looked down at the ruined, shredded lace hanging from her waist. "You ripped my clothes off my body in a church to stop me from marrying your son. And now you expect me to call you Mother?"
"I was protecting Julian! I thought you were a gold digger!" Eleanor pleaded.
"You don't know the first thing about protection," Maya whispered. She turned to Julian, her eyes searching his. "Julian, I need to get out of here. Right now. If you love me, you will take me away from this woman."
May you like
Julian didn't hesitate. He wrapped his arm around Maya's waist, ignoring Eleanor’s desperate pleas, and began to walk her down the long, empty aisle toward the side exit.
For the first time in his life, the golden boy was walking away from his empire.
