Chapter 16: The Dead Man’s Shadow

The morning sun washed over the Manhattan skyline, casting a golden glow through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Julian’s penthouse. Maya stood by the glass, a mug of black coffee in her hand, watching the city wake up. The weight of the diamond and jade ring on her left hand felt like an anchor—a beautiful, grounding promise after weeks of chaos.

Julian stepped up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and burying his face in the crook of her neck. "You're up early for a woman who just took over a billion-dollar empire," he murmured, his voice thick with sleep.

"I couldn't sleep," Maya admitted, leaning back against his solid chest. "I kept thinking about Harrison. He’s in a federal cell, Arthur is in Rikers, the Vances are being audited… it almost feels too quiet. Like the calm in the eye of a hurricane."

Before Julian could soothe her, the private elevator chimed.

Julian’s security chief, Marcus, stepped into the foyer. His face was grim. "Boss. I’m sorry to interrupt. But you have visitors. It’s the FBI."

Ten minutes later, Maya and Julian sat on the white leather sofas across from Special Agent Vance and his partner. Eleanor, who had been staying in the guest wing of the penthouse, sat beside them, radiating an icy, impatient elegance.

"Let me be perfectly clear, Agent Vance," Eleanor said, sipping her tea. "If this is about Harrison's bail, I will personally fund a new precinct for the NYPD if you ensure he never sees the sun again."

"Harrison was denied bail, Mrs. Sterling," Agent Vance said, leaning forward. He placed a single, grainy photograph on the glass coffee table. "But during his interrogation last night, he gave us a piece of information that changes everything. He claimed that neither he, Arthur, nor the Vance Syndicate ordered the hit on Arabella’s car yesterday."

Maya felt a chill creep up her spine. "Then who did?"

Agent Vance looked directly at Eleanor. "Mrs. Sterling, your husband, Richard Sterling… he passed away twenty years ago of a massive coronary on a private yacht off the coast of Monaco, correct?"

"Yes," Eleanor said, her voice tightening. "It was a closed-casket funeral. The heat and the delay in retrieving the vessel… it was deemed necessary by the mortuary. Why on earth are you bringing up my late husband?"

"Because, according to Harrison, the body in that casket belonged to a deckhand," Agent Vance stated flatly. "Richard Sterling faked his death. He’s alive. And Harrison claims Richard is the one who cut your daughter's brakes."

The teacup in Eleanor’s hand shattered against the saucer, spilling hot liquid across the glass table. She grabbed her throat, her face draining of all color. "No. No, that is impossible. I buried him. I mourned him for a decade!"

"The dental records were falsified, Mrs. Sterling," the agent continued gently. "We reopened the file at 2:00 AM. The coroner in Monaco who signed the death certificate deposited three million dollars into a Swiss account two days after Richard’s supposed death. We believe Richard orchestrated his own disappearance to avoid a federal indictment for embezzlement, leaving Arthur and Harrison to stabilize the company. Now that it’s highly profitable, and Arabella has returned to claim the controlling shares… he has returned to take it all back."

Maya stared at the photograph on the table. It was a surveillance still from a traffic camera near FDR Drive. In the background, watching the Maybach crash, was a tall man in a dark trench coat. Even blurry, the aristocratic jawline and cold, piercing eyes were unmistakable.

He had the exact same eyes as Maya.

Julian’s jaw clenched so tight a muscle ticked in his cheek. He reached over and took Maya’s hand, his grip like a vise. "If he comes anywhere near this family, Agent Vance, I won’t need the FBI. I’ll handle him myself."

"Do not underestimate him, Mr. Sterling," the agent warned, standing up. "Richard Sterling was a phantom for twenty years. He is ruthless, he is heavily funded, and he wants his empire back. We will put you all under protective custody."

"No," Maya said, her voice slicing through the room. She stood up, her posture rigid and unyielding. "I spent my whole life hiding. I will not hide in my own city. If my father wants his company back, tell him to come and take it from me."
