CHAPTER 9 — THE LETTER THAT REVEALED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 9 — THE LETTER THAT REVEALED EVERYTHING
The letter shook in Elena’s hands.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Claire Hawthorne had written every word herself.
Every line carried the fear of a woman who knew she was running out of time.

Elena looked at the final sentence again.
"The person who destroyed our family is the person Elena loves most."
The room became painfully quiet.
Everyone looked at Daniel.
Even Victor.
Even Marcus.
But Elena did not.
Because something inside her refused to accept the obvious answer.
The easiest explanation was often the one people wanted you to believe.
And someone had spent years creating illusions.
Elena folded the letter slowly.
“Everyone thinks this means Daniel.”
Nobody answered.
Daniel looked exhausted.
Almost defeated.
“Elena…”
She raised her hand.
“Don’t.”
The word came out softer than she expected.
But it carried more pain than anger.
“I need the truth.”
Daniel nodded.
“You deserve that.”
“Then start talking.”
Daniel looked at the floor.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he finally spoke.
“My connection to the Hawthorne family started eight years ago.”
Elena listened carefully.
“I was working with an investigation team.”
“Not officially.”
“Privately.”
Marcus looked surprised.
“You were investigating Victor?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“Someone else.”
Elena frowned.
“Who?”
Daniel looked toward the letter.
“The person who was controlling everything.”
A cold feeling moved through Elena.
“Then why did you come into my life?”
Daniel’s expression changed.
Because that was the question he had been avoiding.
“I was assigned to watch you.”
Elena felt her chest tighten.
The answer hurt.
Even though she expected it.
“You were spying on me.”
“At first.”
The words landed hard.
“At first?”
Daniel stepped closer.
“I was supposed to find out what you knew.”
“And?”
“And I realized you knew nothing.”
Elena looked away.
“So you stayed.”
“Yes.”
“Because of the mission?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“Because of you.”
The silence between them was painful.
Elena wanted to hate him.
She wanted him to be the villain.
It would have been easier.
But the sadness in his eyes looked real.
Marcus interrupted.
“You’re both ignoring the biggest question.”
Everyone turned.
Marcus pointed toward the letter.
“Claire said the person Elena loves most destroyed the family.”
Elena looked at him.
“And?”
Marcus’s voice lowered.
“What if Claire wasn’t talking about Daniel?”
A strange silence followed.
Elena stared at him.
“What are you saying?”
Marcus looked toward the door.
“What if the person Elena loves most is not her fiancé?”
Nobody understood.
Then Marcus continued.
“What if it’s someone she trusted her entire life?”
A terrible realization began forming.
Elena’s face changed.
“My family.”
Marcus nodded.
“Think about it.”
“Who had access to your past?”
“Who knew about Amelia?”
“Who knew where you would be tonight?”
Elena felt a chill.
Because there was only one person who matched all those answers.
Someone who had always been there.
Someone she never suspected.
Before she could say the name, the mansion lights suddenly went off again.
But this time, nobody screamed.
Everyone knew.
Someone wanted darkness.
Someone wanted control.
A few seconds passed.
Then emergency lights turned on.
Elena immediately noticed something.
The letter was gone.
Someone had taken it.
She looked around.
Nobody moved.
Victor was standing near the window.
Marcus was beside the bookshelf.
Daniel was right in front of her.
“No.”
Elena whispered.
Daniel looked confused.
“What?”
She pointed toward him.
“You didn’t take it.”
Daniel looked shocked.
“How do you know?”
“Because you had the chance.”
“But you didn’t move.”
Everyone became silent.
Then Elena turned toward the doorway.
Because there was one person missing.
The person who had been standing beside Lily earlier.
The doctor.
“The doctor.”
Marcus frowned.
“What about him?”
“He was never unconscious.”
The room froze.
Elena rushed toward the library.
The others followed.
The doctor’s body was gone from the floor.
Only a small blood stain remained.
And on the wall was a message written in black ink.
"You are searching for the wrong enemy."
Below it was another sentence.
"Elena, ask yourself why Amelia trusted Claire."
Elena stared at the words.
Her sister’s name appeared again.
But this time, there was something different.
A clue.
A connection.
Something that could finally explain everything.
Then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A weak voice came through.
“Elena?”
Her entire body froze.
Because she recognized the voice.
She had heard it thousands of times in old recordings.
In childhood memories.
In dreams.
A voice she thought she would never hear again.
“Amelia?”
The person on the other end started crying.
“Elena…”
“I’m sorry.”
Elena couldn’t breathe.
“Where are you?”
A long pause.
Then her sister whispered:
“I was never missing.”
“I was hiding.”
Elena covered her mouth.
The impossible had happened.
Her sister was alive.
But before Elena could ask another question, Amelia said something terrifying.
“Do not trust Claire.”
Elena froze.
“What?”
Her sister’s voice became urgent.
“Claire is not the victim you think she is.”
The call ended.
Elena stood motionless.
Two impossible truths were now fighting against each other.
Claire said someone else destroyed the family.
Amelia said Claire was the danger.
Someone was lying.
Someone was manipulating the story.
And Elena realized the most terrifying possibility.
The person who had been searching for the truth…
May you like
Might have been chasing the wrong side all along.
