CHAPTER 4 — THE SECRET ROOM UNDER THE STAIRCASE

CHAPTER 4 — THE SECRET ROOM UNDER THE STAIRCASE
The photograph burned in Elena’s hand.
Not literally.
But it felt like it.

Because one small piece of paper had just destroyed everything everyone believed about the Hawthorne family.
For eight years, the world had been told the same story.
Claire Hawthorne was dead.
The beloved wife of billionaire Victor Hawthorne had passed away after a tragic accident.
The family had held a private funeral.
The media had written emotional stories.
The public had sent condolences.
And then, just like that, Claire disappeared from history.
But now Elena was holding proof.
Claire had been alive after her own funeral.
Someone had lied.
Someone had buried the truth.
And someone had hidden Lily away.
Elena looked around the mansion.
The walls suddenly felt different.
The beautiful paintings.
The antique furniture.
The expensive decorations.
Everything looked like a carefully designed illusion.
A beautiful prison.
Victor noticed Elena staring at the photograph.
His voice became cold.
“You don’t know what you’re holding.”
Elena looked at him.
“I know exactly what I’m holding.”
“No.”
Victor stepped closer.
“You have no idea how dangerous that information is.”
Elena didn’t move.
“What’s dangerous?”
“The truth?”
Victor said nothing.
That was enough.
Elena turned away from him.
She looked at Lily.
The little girl was exhausted.
Her eyes were barely open.
After years of being hidden away, after hours of fear and confusion, her body was finally giving up.
Elena picked her up.
“We need to get her somewhere safe.”
A security guard immediately stepped forward.
“The private medical room is ready.”
Elena looked at him.
“Who ordered that?”
The guard hesitated.
“Mr. Hawthorne.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
The guard looked confused.
“No?”
“She stays with me.”
Nobody argued.
Because everyone in that room understood something.
Elena was no longer a guest.
She was a threat.
And the Hawthorne family knew it.
Twenty minutes later, Elena sat inside an old library on the second floor of the mansion.
Lily was sleeping on a velvet sofa nearby.
A doctor had examined her.
She was dehydrated.
Weak.
But alive.
Elena stood near the window, looking over the enormous estate.
Somewhere out there was Claire Hawthorne.
A woman everyone thought was dead.
A mother who had left her daughter behind.
Or maybe a mother who had been forced to leave.
The door suddenly opened.
Elena turned.
It was Marcus Hawthorne.
Victor’s younger brother.
The same man who disappeared during the blackout.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
Elena immediately stepped back.
“You disappeared.”
Marcus closed the door.
“That was intentional.”
“Why?”
“Because someone was about to search me.”
Elena stared at him.
“Who?”
Marcus looked toward Lily.
Then lowered his voice.
“Everyone in this house.”
Elena’s suspicion increased.
“Why should I trust you?”
“You shouldn’t.”
The answer surprised her.
Marcus continued.
“Trust is how people in this family get destroyed.”
He reached into his jacket.
Then placed an old key on the table.
Elena looked at it.
“What is that?”
“The key to the room where Claire hid the truth.”
Elena’s heart started beating faster.
“Where?”
Marcus looked toward the hallway.
“Under the staircase.”
Elena frowned.
“There are dozens of staircases in this mansion.”
“Not this one.”
Marcus pointed toward the far corner of the library.
“The original staircase.”
“The one sealed after the renovation.”
Elena remembered something.
Earlier that night, when she walked through the mansion, she noticed a strange section of the wall.
A staircase that looked older than the rest of the house.
Almost forgotten.
“Why are you helping me?”
Marcus looked at Lily.
His expression changed.
A mixture of regret and pain appeared on his face.
“Because I failed her once.”
“Failed who?”
Marcus swallowed.
“Claire.”
Before Elena could ask another question, a loud sound came from outside the library.
A crash.
Then footsteps.
Someone was running through the hallway.
Marcus immediately turned off the lights.
“Someone knows we’re here.”
Elena whispered.
“Who?”
Marcus looked terrified.
“The person who locked Lily away.”
The footsteps stopped outside the door.
Silence.
Then the handle slowly moved.
Someone was trying to enter.
Elena held her breath.
Marcus grabbed an old fireplace tool, preparing to defend them.
The door opened.
But nobody was there.
Only a small envelope rested on the floor.
Elena slowly picked it up.
Her name was written on the front.
ELENA VALE
Her hands trembled.
Because nobody at the gala knew her middle name.
Nobody except one person.
She opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
A handwritten message.
"You found Lily because I wanted you to."
Elena froze.
The next sentence made her blood run cold.
"But if you find Claire, you will learn why she disappeared."
At the bottom of the page was a signature.
A name Elena had never expected to see.
Claire Hawthorne.
Elena looked at Marcus.
“Is this real?”
Marcus didn’t answer.
Because he already knew.
The impossible had happened.
Claire Hawthorne was alive.
And she had been watching Elena from the shadows.
But the biggest question remained.
Why had Claire chosen Elena?
And why had she waited eight years to reveal herself?
Elena looked at the hidden key on the table.
Then toward the sealed staircase.
A secret room was waiting beneath the mansion.
A room that could explain everything.
The missing child.
The fake death.
The family conspiracy.
And the reason Claire Hawthorne had trusted a stranger to uncover the truth.
Elena reached for the key.
She knew there was no turning back.
Because once she opened that door…
May you like
The Hawthorne family would never be the same again.
