CHAPTER 11 — THE FINAL WITNESS

CHAPTER 11 — THE FINAL WITNESS

The words stared back at Elena.

"Subject Elena Vale: The final witness."

For several seconds, she couldn’t understand what she was reading.

The letters were clear.

The file was real.

Her name was printed across the top of a confidential document.

A document that should never have existed.

Her fingers tightened around the pages.

“What is this?”

Nobody answered.

Not Daniel.

Not Amelia.

Not Victor.

Not Marcus.

That silence terrified her more than the file itself.

Elena looked at her sister.

“You knew about this?”

Amelia looked away.

“Yes.”

The answer felt like another betrayal.

“You knew?”

“I found the file months ago.”

“And you never told me?”

“I was trying to protect you.”

Elena laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

She threw the file onto the table.

“Everyone protects me by lying to me.”

Amelia stepped closer.

“I didn’t know who I could trust.”

Elena looked at her.

“You’re my sister.”

“And you disappeared.”

The words hit Amelia harder than Elena expected.

A painful expression crossed her face.

“I know.”

“I know what I did to you.”

“I know what those years were like.”

“But I was trying to survive.”

The anger in Elena’s chest softened for a moment.

Because she saw something in Amelia’s eyes.

Regret.

Real regret.

But there was still one question.

“Why did you leave me?”

Amelia took a deep breath.

“Because someone was watching you.”

Elena froze.

“Who?”

Amelia looked around the mansion.

“Everyone.”

The answer sounded impossible.

But after everything Elena had discovered that night, impossible no longer existed.

Amelia pointed toward the file.

“Your name is there because you witnessed something when you were younger.”

Elena frowned.

“I was a child.”

“I don’t remember anything.”

“That’s because someone made sure you wouldn’t.”

A cold feeling moved through Elena.

“What did I see?”

Amelia hesitated.

Then she said:

“The night our parents died.”

The room went silent.

Elena felt like the floor moved beneath her.

“My parents?”

Amelia nodded.

“You were there.”

“No.”

Elena shook her head.

“I was told it was an accident.”

“That’s what they wanted you to believe.”

Daniel looked shocked.

“Amelia.”

She turned toward him.

“You knew?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Elena immediately noticed.

“Daniel.”

His face changed.

“How much did you know?”

Daniel looked devastated.

“I knew there was something connected to your childhood.”

“That’s not an answer.”

He lowered his eyes.

“I knew your parents’ death was connected to the Hawthorne family.”

Elena stepped backward.

The pain was immediate.

“You knew?”

“I was trying to find proof.”

“You knew my whole life was built on a lie.”

“I didn’t know the details.”

“But you knew enough.”

Daniel had no defense.

Because she was right.

Elena turned back to Amelia.

“What did I see that night?”

Amelia looked at Victor.

The billionaire immediately shook his head.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

Victor looked nervous.

“Not here.”

Elena stared at him.

“You know.”

Victor remained silent.

“Tell me.”

The billionaire’s expression changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid of Elena.

“Your parents discovered the truth about the foundation.”

Elena remembered Claire’s journal.

The hidden money.

The secret accounts.

“The same thing Claire found.”

Victor nodded.

“Yes.”

“And?”

Victor looked at the floor.

“And they were going to expose everyone involved.”

Elena’s voice became quiet.

“Everyone?”

Victor didn’t answer.

She understood.

More people were involved than she imagined.

Then Amelia spoke.

“That night, someone came to our house.”

Elena looked at her.

“Who?”

Amelia swallowed.

“I never saw the face.”

“But I heard the voice.”

The mansion became silent.

“What voice?”

Amelia looked directly at Daniel.

Daniel’s face changed.

“No.”

Amelia continued.

“The person said they were there to protect the family.”

Elena looked between them.

“What does that mean?”

Amelia reached into her bag again.

She pulled out a small audio recorder.

“I kept this.”

Daniel stared at it.

“Where did you get that?”

Amelia looked at him.

“You know exactly where.”

Elena pressed the play button.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice appeared.

A voice from eight years ago.

A voice Elena had heard before.

The recording was damaged.

But one sentence was clear.

"Elena cannot remember what happened tonight."

Elena felt sick.

Because someone had intentionally erased her memory.

The recording continued.

A second voice spoke.

A voice that made everyone freeze.

Because it belonged to someone standing in the room.

Someone alive.

Someone Elena trusted.

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Elena slowly looked up.

Her eyes filled with disbelief.

Because now she knew.

The person who had controlled the secrets.

The person who had hidden the truth.

The person who had been manipulating everyone.

Was not a stranger.

It was someone close enough to enter her life.

Close enough to gain her trust.

Close enough to become family.

Elena whispered:

“No…”

Daniel looked at her.

“Elena.”

She stepped away.

“Don’t.”

Because she finally understood why Claire wrote the warning.

Why Amelia disappeared.

Why Lily was hidden.

The enemy was not outside the family.

The enemy was inside her own life.

And the person behind everything had been protecting one secret above all others.

The truth about what Elena saw that night.

May you like

The truth about who really destroyed her family.
