CHAPTER 5 — THE ROOM THAT CLAIRE LEFT BEHIND

CHAPTER 5 — THE ROOM THAT CLAIRE LEFT BEHIND
The old key felt heavier than it should have.
Elena held it tightly in her hand as she followed Marcus through the dark hallway.
Every step echoed through the silent mansion.

The sounds of the gala had disappeared.
The music.
The laughter.
The fake smiles.
Everything was gone.
Only secrets remained.
Behind them, Lily slept in the library under the protection of a trusted doctor.
But Elena knew one thing.
The little girl was never truly safe.
Not while the person who imprisoned her was still somewhere inside the Hawthorne estate.
Marcus stopped in front of a forgotten section of the mansion.
A tall wooden bookshelf covered the wall.
Dust covered the edges.
Most guests probably walked past it thousands of times without noticing anything unusual.
Elena looked at Marcus.
“This is it?”
He nodded.
“Claire found it ten years ago.”
“What was inside?”
Marcus stared at the bookshelf.
“Everything they wanted destroyed.”
Elena slowly moved closer.
She noticed something strange.
One book was different from the others.
It was newer.
Cleaner.
Almost like someone had touched it recently.
She pulled it.
A hidden mechanism clicked.
The entire bookshelf moved.
Behind it was a narrow stone staircase leading downward.
Cold air rushed upward.
Elena felt a chill.
“This mansion was built with secrets.”
Marcus looked at her.
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“This family was built on secrets.”
They walked down.
The staircase was old.
The walls were covered with faded photographs and handwritten notes.
At the bottom was a small wooden door.
The key fit perfectly.
Elena took a deep breath.
Then she unlocked it.
The door opened slowly.
Inside was a room frozen in time.
A small desk.
A broken lamp.
Stacks of documents.
Old photographs.
And on the wall…
Pictures of Lily.
Hundreds of them.
From the day she was born.
Her first steps.
Her first birthday.
Her first day of school.
Elena’s heart tightened.
Claire had not abandoned her daughter.
She had been watching.
She had been keeping memories.
“She loved her.”
Marcus looked down.
“More than anything.”
Elena turned toward him.
“Then why did she disappear?”
Marcus didn’t answer.
That silence told Elena there was a painful truth behind it.
She walked toward the desk.
On top was a journal.
The cover was damaged.
The name written on it made her stop.
Claire Hawthorne.
Elena opened it.
The first pages were ordinary.
Notes about Lily.
Memories.
Dreams.
A mother writing about her daughter.
Then the entries changed.
The handwriting became rushed.
Messy.
Fearful.
"Victor knows I discovered the accounts."
Elena frowned.
She continued reading.
"The money was never going to charity."
Her eyes widened.
The Hawthorne Foundation.
The organization known worldwide for helping children.
The organization that made Victor Hawthorne one of the most respected billionaires in America.
Claire had discovered something.
Something dangerous.
Elena turned the page.
"I found where the donations were really going."
Another page.
"If anything happens to me, it was not an accident."
Elena stopped breathing.
Marcus looked away.
“You knew.”
Elena’s voice was cold.
“You knew she was investigating him.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“And you did nothing?”
His face showed regret.
“I tried.”
“But I was too late.”
Before Elena could respond, a sound came from the hallway.
A soft click.
The door behind them moved.
Someone had entered the hidden staircase.
Marcus immediately turned.
“We need to leave.”
Elena grabbed the journal.
“No.”
“We came here for answers.”
“We have them.”
“No.”
Elena looked at the room.
“We have pieces.”
She pointed toward the documents.
“The person who trapped Lily wanted this room hidden.”
“And now we know why.”
Suddenly, a voice came from outside.
“Interesting.”
Elena froze.
The voice was familiar.
Too familiar.
The hidden door slowly opened.
Daniel Cross stepped into the room.
Elena’s heart dropped.
“What are you doing here?”
Daniel looked at the journal in her hand.
His expression was unreadable.
“I was hoping you would never find this place.”
Elena stared at him.
The man she planned to marry.
The man she thought loved her.
“You knew about this room?”
Daniel said nothing.
That was the answer.
Elena felt something inside her break.
“You lied to me.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Elena, listen.”
“No.”
Her voice shook.
“You were there when Lily said your name.”
“You knew about the room.”
“You knew about Claire.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“You don’t understand.”
Elena laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
“Victor said it.”
“Isabella said it.”
“Now you say it.”
She held up the journal.
“But I understand one thing.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What?”
“You are protecting them.”
The silence was painful.
Then Daniel whispered:
“I am protecting you.”
Elena stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel looked toward the journal.
Then toward the hidden room.
Then he said the words Elena never expected.
“Because Claire Hawthorne wasn’t the only person who disappeared eight years ago.”
Elena froze.
“What are you talking about?”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Your sister.”
The room went completely silent.
Elena’s face lost all color.
Nobody knew about her sister.
Nobody.
Not even Daniel.
At least, that was what she believed.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“The night Claire vanished…”
“She was looking for someone.”
Elena whispered:
“Who?”
Daniel looked directly into her eyes.
“She was looking for the person who took your sister.”
The journal slipped slightly in Elena’s hand.
The secrets of the Hawthorne family were no longer just about Lily.
They were connected to Elena’s own past.
Her own pain.
Her own unanswered questions.
And suddenly she realized something terrifying.
She had not discovered the Hawthorne mystery by accident.
May you like
Someone had chosen her because she was already part of it.
