CHAPTER 14 — THE FINAL PROJECT

CHAPTER 14 — THE FINAL PROJECT

The words stayed in Elena’s mind.

"Your parents created the project."

She wanted to reject it.

She wanted to laugh.

She wanted someone to tell her this was another cruel game.

But nobody did.

Because everyone in the room looked terrified.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

Elena slowly turned toward Marcus.

“What was the Final Project?”

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

He looked at Victor.

The billionaire closed his eyes.

Like he already knew the truth was finally coming out.

“Tell her.”

Marcus looked shocked.

“Victor.”

“She deserves to know.”

For the first time that night, Victor Hawthorne sounded tired.

Not powerful.

Not wealthy.

Just a man carrying years of regret.

Marcus took a deep breath.

“The Final Project was created twenty years ago.”

Elena listened.

“It started as a security program.”

“A way to protect important information.”

“Your father was one of the smartest people involved.”

“My mother?”

Marcus nodded.

“Your mother was the person who discovered how dangerous the project could become.”

Elena frowned.

“Why?”

“Because the project was never just about protecting information.”

Marcus looked at the files on the table.

“It was about controlling it.”

A chill moved through Elena.

“Controlling information?”

“Yes.”

“Who knew what.”

“Who could reveal secrets.”

“Who could destroy powerful people.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“And Elena was involved because…”

Marcus looked at him.

“Because she saw something.”

The room became silent.

Elena felt her heart beating faster.

“I already know that.”

“No.”

Marcus shook his head.

“You don’t.”

“You were not just a witness.”

Elena stared at him.

“What do you mean?”

Marcus walked toward the old file.

He opened the first page.

Inside was a photograph of Elena as a child.

She was standing beside her parents.

On the back was a handwritten note.

"Subject remembers more than expected."

Elena felt sick.

“They studied me?”

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your parents believed memory could not always be destroyed.”

Elena looked confused.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel answered quietly.

“They knew someone would try to erase the truth.”

Elena turned toward him.

“And they used me?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“They protected you.”

“How?”

“By making sure you were the only person who could reveal everything if the project was ever corrupted.”

Elena stared at the file.

The final witness.

Not because she accidentally saw something.

Because her parents designed it that way.

A sudden sound interrupted them.

A crash came from the upper floor.

Everyone turned.

Marcus immediately reached for the security phone.

“No response.”

Victor looked toward the ceiling.

“Impossible.”

Elena looked at him.

“What?”

“The upper floors are locked.”

Daniel moved toward the stairs.

“Then someone opened them.”

They rushed upstairs.

The hallway was dark.

The old paintings watched them from the walls.

Elena felt like the mansion itself was hiding something.

They reached the private wing.

A door stood open.

A room that had been locked for years.

Claire’s old bedroom.

Elena entered slowly.

The room looked untouched.

A frozen memory.

A woman’s perfume still lingered in the air.

Books remained on shelves.

Clothes stayed inside the closet.

It looked like Claire had simply walked out one day.

But on the bed was something new.

A folder.

With Elena’s name.

Again.

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Hundreds of photographs.

Photos of Elena.

As a child.

As a teenager.

As an adult.

Someone had been watching her entire life.

Daniel looked disturbed.

“Who took these?”

Elena turned the page.

There was a schedule.

Her school.

Her jobs.

Her relationships.

Every major moment of her life.

Someone had tracked everything.

Then she saw the final page.

A message.

Written by Claire.

"Elena, if you found this, then Richard failed to stop you."

Elena froze.

Claire knew.

She knew Richard was involved.

She kept reading.

"You need to understand something."

"The Final Project was not created to expose criminals."

"It was created to identify them."

Elena frowned.

Identify them?

The next sentence made her blood run cold.

"Your parents discovered the project had identified someone impossible."

She turned the page.

There was only one line.

"The person controlling everything was someone we trusted with our family."

Elena’s breathing became uneven.

Another secret.

Another hidden name.

She searched the page.

But the name had been removed.

Someone had torn it away.

Then the lights went out.

Again.

But this time, Elena was prepared.

She grabbed the flashlight from the table.

A shadow moved near the doorway.

Someone was inside the room.

“Elena…”

The voice was weak.

Familiar.

Everyone froze.

Because the person standing there should not have been able to enter.

Should not have been able to walk.

Should not have been alive.

Elena whispered:

“Claire.”

The woman stepped into the light.

Older.

Exhausted.

But alive.

Lily’s mother had finally returned.

Victor stared at her.

Marcus couldn’t speak.

Daniel looked shocked.

And Amelia immediately moved in front of Elena.

Protecting her.

Claire looked at Elena.

Tears filled her eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

Elena stared at her.

“Why?”

Claire looked at the file in her hand.

“Because I was the one who chose you.”

Elena froze.

“What?”

Claire took a step closer.

“Eight years ago, I knew the truth would eventually come out.”

“I knew Lily would need someone.”

“I knew Amelia would return.”

“And I knew someone would have to finish what your parents started.”

Elena’s voice shook.

“Why me?”

Claire looked at her.

“Because you are the only person who can unlock the Final Project.”

Everyone became silent.

Elena looked confused.

“I don’t know how.”

Claire whispered:

“Yes, you do.”

“No.”

“You just don’t remember.”

A terrible realization entered Elena’s mind.

Her missing memories.

The accident.

The night her parents died.

Everything she had forgotten.

Claire stepped closer.

“The truth was never hidden from you.”

“It was hidden inside you.”

Elena stared at her.

And for the first time, she wondered if her entire life had been a carefully planned mystery.

Not because someone wanted to destroy her.

But because someone needed her to survive long enough to reveal the truth.

Claire reached into her coat.

She pulled out a small device.

“The final piece is here.”

Elena looked at it.

“What is it?”

Claire answered:

“The memory your parents tried to protect.”

Then the device turned on.

And Elena heard a voice from twenty years ago.

Her father’s voice.

The last words he ever recorded.

"If Elena is hearing this..."

A pause.

Then:

"It means the person who betrayed us has finally found her."

Everyone froze.

Because the recording was not finished.

May you like

And the next sentence would reveal the name of the person who started everything.
