Chapter 2: Hidden Eyes

Chapter 2: Hidden Eyes
The ambulance doors slammed shut.
Ethan climbed inside without hesitation, refusing to let go of Ava's hand.
As the siren echoed through the streets, Ava lay quietly on the stretcher. Her face was pale, and every bump in the road made her wince.
"I'm here," Ethan whispered.
She managed a weak smile.
"I thought... you wouldn't believe me."

His heart sank.
"I should have listened months ago."
A tear slipped down Ava's cheek.
"I tried to tell you."
"I know."
"No... you don't."
She closed her eyes, exhausted.
"Every day she gave me pills."
Ethan looked at her in shock.
"What kind of pills?"
"I don't know."
"She said they were vitamins."
Ava swallowed painfully.
"But every time I took them... I couldn't think clearly."
"I forgot conversations."
"I forgot where I was."
"Sometimes... I even forgot what day it was."
Ethan felt sick.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The confusion.
The memory lapses.
The sudden mood changes.
His mother had convinced everyone they were symptoms of Ava's brain injury.
What if they weren't?
What if they had been manufactured?
Meanwhile...
Back at the Carter estate, Detective Daniel Brooks stood inside the office studying every inch of the room.
The tiny memory card Ethan had found sat inside an evidence bag.
"Search the entire house," Brooks ordered.
"No room is off-limits."
Officers spread through the mansion.
Drawers opened.
Cabinets were searched.
Every office, bedroom, and storage room was photographed.
Margaret sat silently in the living room.
Her attorney had arrived less than twenty minutes earlier.
"This search is outrageous," the lawyer argued.
Detective Brooks remained calm.
"We have probable cause."
One officer entered carrying a small black device.
"Detective."
Brooks looked up.
"What did you find?"
"A wireless receiver."
"Where?"
"Hidden behind the bookshelf."
Brooks carefully examined it.
"It matches the memory card."
The attorney frowned.
"What exactly does that prove?"
"We'll know after forensics examines it."
Margaret's fingers tightened around her purse.
She said nothing.
Three hours later...
Mercy General Hospital.
Doctors wheeled Ava into Radiology while Ethan waited outside.
Every minute felt like an hour.
Lena sat beside him with an ice pack against her bruised face.
"I'm sorry," Ethan said quietly.
"You shouldn't apologize."
"I should've seen what was happening."
Lena hesitated.
"I wanted to tell you."
"What stopped you?"
She looked toward the floor.
"Your mother."
Ethan's jaw tightened.
"She threatened you?"
Lena nodded.
"She said if I spoke..."
"...I'd lose my job."
"...and she'd make sure no one ever hired me again."
She paused.
"Then she threatened my younger brother."
Ethan stared at her.
"Your brother?"
"He has autism."
"He depends on me."
"I couldn't risk losing everything."
Guilt washed over Ethan.
"How long has this been happening?"
Lena closed her eyes.
"Since the accident."
Across town...
The state forensic laboratory.
Technicians inserted the recovered memory card into a secure computer.
Detective Brooks watched from behind the glass.
The first folder appeared.
OFFICE CAM 01.
The technician clicked Play.
The screen came alive.
The office.
The desk.
The wheelchair.
The hidden camera had recorded everything.
Hours...
Days...
Weeks...
Margaret appeared again and again.
Sometimes speaking sweetly.
Sometimes shouting.
Sometimes forcing pills into Ava's hand.
Detective Brooks stared in disbelief.
"Keep going."
Another video played.
Margaret sliding documents across the desk.
Another.
Threatening Ava.
Another.
Telling her no one would ever believe her.
Then...
A recording from earlier that morning.
Everything.
The orange juice.
The pills.
The argument.
The slap.
The wheelchair tipping over.
Every second had been captured perfectly.
The technician slowly removed his headphones.
"That's attempted coercion."
Brooks nodded.
"And possibly attempted poisoning."
But another folder caught his attention.
GARAGE CAM.
"Open that one."
The technician clicked.
Static filled the screen.
Then...
The mansion garage appeared.
The date in the corner made Brooks lean closer.
Six months earlier.
The night before Ava's crash.
The video showed a luxury SUV parked inside.
At exactly 11:47 p.m., someone entered the garage wearing dark clothing and gloves.
The person's face was hidden beneath a hood.
They walked directly to Ava's vehicle.
Then crouched beside the driver's side wheel.
"What are they doing?" the technician asked.
The figure remained there for several minutes.
When they finally stood...
Something metallic disappeared into their pocket.
The hooded person quietly left the garage.
Brooks paused the video.
"Zoom in."
The image sharpened.
Not enough to identify the face...
But enough to notice one detail.
A distinctive emerald ring.
Large.
Square-cut.
Worn on the right hand.
Detective Brooks narrowed his eyes.
He had seen that ring before.
Earlier that afternoon.
On Margaret Carter's hand.
Late that evening...
Ava slowly opened her eyes in her hospital room.
Ethan was asleep beside her bed, still holding her hand.
She watched him for several seconds before quietly whispering...
"Ethan..."
He woke instantly.
"I'm here."
She looked toward the window.
"I remembered something."
"What is it?"
"The night of the accident..."
She closed her eyes.
"I wasn't alone."
Ethan leaned forward.
"What do you remember?"
Ava's breathing quickened.
"I saw someone..."
"Standing beside my car."
Her hands began trembling.
"And..."
She looked directly into Ethan's eyes.
"I think..."
"I knew who it was."
Outside the room, Detective Brooks had just arrived.
In his briefcase sat a search warrant...
The hidden camera footage...
And a freeze-frame showing the mysterious figure wearing Margaret Carter's unmistakable emerald ring.
For the first time...

The old car crash was no longer being treated as an accident.
It had become the center of a criminal investigation.
