Chapter 18: Richard's Last Secret

Chapter 18: Richard's Last Secret

Gregory's final words echoed through the silent warehouse.

"Grace isn't the only child Richard protected."

No one spoke.

Ethan looked at Detective Brooks.

"What does that mean?"

Brooks slowly shook his head.

"I don't know."

"But Richard left too many clues for this to be a coincidence."

Ramirez picked up Gregory's abandoned phone.

"There may be more files."

The forensic technician connected it to a secure laptop.

Most of the phone's storage had been remotely erased.

Fortunately...

Not everything was gone.

A recovery program restored several deleted videos.

One file immediately caught Brooks' attention.

FOR RICHARD

The video began.

Gregory appeared noticeably older and exhausted.

"Richard..."

"If you're watching this, then I failed."

"I couldn't stop Margaret forever."

He looked away for a moment before continuing.

"I kept my promise."

"I never told her."

"But if Ethan ever learns the truth..."

"He deserves to know."

The screen briefly flickered.

Then Gregory held up a small silver key.

"The key opens Safe Deposit Box 108."

"Everything else is inside."

The video ended.

Brooks frowned.

"Safe Deposit Box 108."

Ramirez searched local banking records.

Three minutes later, she looked up.

"We found it."

"Where?"

"First National Bank."

"The same bank where Richard rented Box 714."

Brooks smiled slightly.

"Richard planned this carefully."

The next morning...

Ethan, Grace, Ava, Brooks, and Ramirez met at the bank.

The manager personally escorted them into the underground vault.

Unlike Richard's deposit box...

Box 108 wasn't registered under the Carter name.

Instead...

It belonged to a trust.

The Hope Foundation.

Brooks looked at Ethan.

"Ever heard of it?"

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

The manager unlocked the box.

Inside rested only three items.

A sealed envelope.

A leather journal.

And a velvet jewelry box.

Brooks opened the envelope first.

Inside was another handwritten letter from Richard.

"If this box has been opened..."

"Then Gregory kept his word."

"The final secret isn't about another hidden heir."

"It's about another life Margaret tried to destroy."

Everyone exchanged confused glances.

Richard continued.

"Twenty-nine years ago..."

"A young woman named Sarah Bennett witnessed Grace's kidnapping."

"Margaret paid people to silence her."

"Gregory helped her escape before they could."

"Sarah disappeared under a new identity."

Grace frowned.

"So Gregory meant..."

Brooks nodded.

"He wasn't talking about another Carter child."

"He meant another person Richard protected."

Ava quietly exhaled.

"So Sarah is alive?"

Brooks looked at the journal.

"Let's find out."

The leather journal belonged to Gregory.

Its pages documented nearly three decades of secret meetings with Richard.

Each entry described their efforts to protect Grace.

Then Brooks reached the final pages.

One entry had been written only six months earlier.

"Sarah contacted me."

"She's finally ready to testify."

"She still remembers everything she saw the night Grace was taken."

Below that...

Gregory had written an address.

A small town in northern Oregon.

Ramirez looked up.

"If Sarah is willing to testify..."

"She connects Margaret directly to Grace's kidnapping."

"And possibly to everything afterward."

Brooks nodded.

"Exactly."

Ethan carefully opened the velvet jewelry box.

Inside lay a simple gold necklace.

Grace gasped.

"I've seen that before."

Everyone looked at her.

"My foster mother gave me a photograph."

"It showed me wearing this necklace when I first arrived at St. Anne's."

Brooks examined the pendant.

There was a tiny button hidden inside.

He pressed it gently.

The pendant opened.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

Ramirez carefully unfolded it.

Only one sentence appeared.

Never forget who you are.

Signed,

Dad

Grace broke into tears.

"He found a way..."

"He left me something."

Ethan wrapped his sister in a hug.

"Our father never stopped loving you."

Across town...

Margaret's attorney entered the detention center with troubling news.

"The judge denied bail."

Margaret remained silent.

"The prosecution now has another witness."

She slowly looked up.

"Who?"

"We don't know yet."

"But Detective Brooks traveled to Oregon this morning."

Margaret's face lost its color.

"Sarah..."

The attorney frowned.

"You know that name?"

Margaret whispered to herself,

"I thought she was gone."

Late that afternoon...

Brooks and Ramirez arrived at a quiet farmhouse outside a small Oregon town.

An elderly woman sat on the front porch reading a novel.

She looked up as they approached.

Without saying a word...

She smiled sadly.

"I've been expecting you."

Brooks showed his badge.

"Sarah Bennett?"

She nodded.

"I suppose it's finally time."

She invited them inside.

Old family photographs lined the walls.

Sarah poured two cups of coffee before quietly sitting down.

"I've spent twenty-nine years waiting for someone to ask."

Brooks switched on the recorder.

"I need you to tell us about June 14, 1992."

Sarah closed her eyes.

"I was working near St. Anne's."

"I saw a little girl crying."

"She kept saying..."

"'I want my daddy.'"

Brooks listened carefully.

"What happened next?"

"A black sedan arrived."

"A woman stepped out."

"I'll never forget her face."

She paused.

"It was Margaret Carter."

Brooks nodded.

"What did she do?"

Sarah's voice trembled.

"She told the child..."

"'Your father doesn't want you anymore.'"

Grace's eyes filled with tears as she listened through the live audio feed from headquarters.

Sarah continued.

"The little girl stopped crying."

"She believed it."

Silence filled the room.

Sarah looked directly at Brooks.

"I wanted to help."

"But Margaret saw me."

"What happened?"

"She threatened me."

"Then two men came after me."

"I ran."

"I never stopped running."

Brooks gently closed his notebook.

"Would you testify in court?"

Sarah looked out the window for a long moment.

Then nodded.

"Yes."

"It's time Grace learns the truth."

As Brooks thanked her, his phone vibrated.

It was Ethan.

His voice was urgent.

"Detective..."

"What happened?"

"We just received a call from the prison."

Brooks immediately stood.

"What is it?"

Ethan's answer sent a chill through the room.

"Margaret is gone."

The line went silent.

Margaret Carter had escaped custody.

May you like

And she had only one destination left.

Grace.
