Chapter 11: Grace's Trail

Chapter 11: Grace's Trail
Ethan read the anonymous note over and over.
"She's still alive."
"Find Grace before Margaret's people do."
He turned the faded photograph over in his hands.
The little girl had bright eyes and a wide smile. Richard Carter stood behind her with one hand resting gently on her shoulder.
There was no mistaking it.
The affection on his face was real.

Ava looked at the picture.
"She looks like your father."
Ethan nodded slowly.
"And... she looks a little like me."
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
If Grace Carter was alive...
Everything they thought they knew about the Carter family had been built on a lie.
Detective Brooks arrived at the hospital less than an hour later.
Ethan handed him the photograph and the note.
Brooks examined both carefully.
"No fingerprints."
"The paper is ordinary."
"The message was printed on a public printer."
"So whoever sent it knew how to avoid leaving evidence."
Ramirez entered carrying another folder.
"We've already searched birth records."
"Nothing?"
She shook her head.
"No official record of Grace after 1992."
"It's as if she vanished."
Victor's words echoed in Brooks' mind.
"Margaret made sure of that."
Later that afternoon...
Brooks visited Richard Carter's longtime attorney, Samuel Whitmore.
The eighty-year-old lawyer welcomed him into his office.
"I was expecting this visit."
Brooks sat across from him.
"You knew about Grace."
Whitmore sighed.
"I promised Richard I would never speak unless something happened to him."
"And now?"
"He passed away."
"And his family is falling apart."
The old attorney slowly opened a fireproof cabinet.
From inside, he removed a sealed envelope.
Across the front, Richard had written in neat handwriting:
To Be Opened Only If Margaret Is Charged With a Serious Crime.
Whitmore carefully broke the seal.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
He quietly handed it to Brooks.
The letter read:
If you're reading this, then my greatest fear has become reality.
Margaret always believed control mattered more than love.
Years ago, I discovered she had arranged for Grace to disappear after convincing everyone the child would be safer away from the family.
By the time I learned the truth, every record had been erased.
I spent years searching.
I failed.
But I left everything I discovered in Deposit Box 714 at First National Bank.
If Grace is alive... she deserves to know the truth.
Signed,
Richard Carter
Brooks looked up.
"When was this written?"
Whitmore answered quietly.
"Three weeks before Richard died."
Meanwhile...
At Mercy General Hospital...
Ava continued her rehabilitation.
This time she managed five careful steps between the parallel bars.
Ethan applauded softly.
"You did it."
Ava smiled through tears.
"I haven't stood on my own in six months."
Dr. Harper nodded with satisfaction.
"Your nerves are responding."
"The recovery will be slow."
"But I believe you'll walk again."
Hope returned to Ava's eyes.
For the first time since the crash...
She truly believed it too.
Across town...
Margaret sat alone in her detention cell.
A guard approached.
"You have a visitor."
"My attorney?"
"No."
Margaret frowned.
She entered the visitation room.
A man in an expensive gray suit stood waiting.
She immediately recognized him.
Charles Donovan.
The Carter family's longtime financial adviser.
"What are you doing here?" she asked.
Charles lowered his voice.
"The police searched the offshore accounts."
"I know."
"They're getting close."
Margaret stared at him.
"You destroyed the files?"
Charles hesitated.
"Most of them."
"Most?"
"There was one account I couldn't access."
Margaret's expression darkened.
"Which one?"
"Project Legacy."
Her breathing slowed.
"Why?"
"The authorization changed after Richard died."
Margaret whispered,
"Impossible."
Charles shook his head.
"No."
"It was transferred to another beneficiary."
Margaret grabbed the edge of the table.
"Who?"
Charles looked around before answering.
"We don't know."
"But whoever it is..."
"They now control everything."
At First National Bank...
Detective Brooks, Ethan, and Whitmore entered the private vault.
The bank manager unlocked Deposit Box 714.
Inside were several folders.
A USB drive.
A stack of photographs.
And a small cassette recorder.
Brooks carefully picked up the recorder.
"It still has a tape inside."
The bank manager located an old cassette player.
Everyone stood silently as Brooks pressed Play.
Richard Carter's voice filled the room.
"If you're hearing this..."
"I may no longer be alive."
Ethan's eyes filled with tears.
He hadn't heard his father's voice in years.
Richard continued.
"Ethan..."
"If you're with Detective Brooks..."
"Listen carefully."
"Grace was never abandoned."
"She was kidnapped."
The room fell silent.
Richard's voice trembled.
"I discovered evidence that Margaret paid someone to take her."
"I confronted her."
"She denied everything."
"But I never believed her."
"I searched for Grace until the day I died."
"There's one final clue inside the blue folder."
The tape clicked off.
Ethan quickly opened the blue folder.
Inside was an old newspaper clipping.
A photograph of a children's charity event from twenty-eight years earlier.
Dozens of children smiled at the camera.
One little girl had been circled in red ink.
Written beneath the picture were four words.
She remembered her name.
Brooks turned the newspaper over.
On the back...
Richard had written another note.
St. Anne's Children's Home.
Detective Ramirez looked up from her phone.
"Detective..."
"I've found something."
"What?"
"St. Anne's closed twenty-five years ago."
"Where are the records?"
She looked troubled.
"They were destroyed in a warehouse fire."
Brooks frowned.
"A coincidence?"
Ramirez slowly shook her head.
"I don't think so."
That evening...
As Ethan and Brooks left the bank carrying Richard's files, a black SUV sat parked across the street.
Inside, a woman wearing dark sunglasses watched them carefully.
She picked up her phone.
"They found Richard's deposit box."
A voice answered calmly.
"I expected they would."
"What do you want me to do?"
The reply came without hesitation.
"Get to St. Anne's first."
The SUV pulled away into traffic.
The race to find Grace Carter had officially begun.
