Chapter 16: The Impossible Fingerprints

Chapter 16: The Impossible Fingerprints

The bookstore fell silent.

Everyone stared at Detective Ramirez.

"It can't be," Ethan said.

"My father died two years before Ava's accident."

Ramirez nodded.

"I know."

"That's why I asked the lab to test the sample three times."

"And?"

"The result was identical every time."

Brooks frowned.

"There has to be another explanation."

Grace, still shaken from the attempted kidnapping, looked from Ethan to the detectives.

"What does any of this have to do with me?"

Brooks pulled up a chair.

"It's a long story."

"You deserve to hear the truth."

Over the next thirty minutes, he explained everything.

Margaret's manipulation.

The forged documents.

The sedatives.

The sabotaged brakes.

The hidden cameras.

The bridge.

And Richard Carter's years-long search for his missing daughter.

By the time he finished, tears streamed down Grace's face.

"My father... never gave up looking for me?"

Ethan gently shook his head.

"Never."

Grace covered her mouth.

"I spent my whole life believing I had been abandoned."

"You weren't," Ethan said softly.

"He loved you."

Back at the state forensic laboratory...

Brooks met with Dr. Olivia Chen, the lead forensic scientist.

She placed the fingerprint report on the table.

"The prints are genuine."

"So they belong to Richard Carter?"

She nodded.

"They match his records."

"But..."

She slid over another photograph.

"The fingerprint wasn't fresh."

Brooks looked confused.

"What do you mean?"

"It wasn't left on the night of the attack."

She enlarged the microscopic image.

"A transparent protective coating covered the metal railing."

"The fingerprint was sealed beneath it."

Brooks leaned closer.

"So the print was already there?"

"Exactly."

"The weather preserved it."

"The rain and oxidation never reached the surface underneath."

Brooks finally relaxed.

"So Richard wasn't there that night."

"No."

"But he had been there years earlier."

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"For a moment..."

"I thought everything we knew had fallen apart."

Brooks nodded.

"It actually confirms something."

"What?"

"Your father visited that bridge long before Ava's accident."

"Maybe while searching for Grace."

Meanwhile...

Grace agreed to accompany the detectives to the police station.

As they prepared to leave...

An elderly woman hurried across the street.

"Grace!"

Grace turned.

"Mrs. Palmer?"

The elderly woman embraced her tightly.

"I heard what happened."

"I'm fine."

Mrs. Palmer looked at the detectives.

"Is this about her family?"

Brooks nodded.

"Were you Grace's foster mother?"

Mrs. Palmer smiled sadly.

"I raised her."

Grace looked surprised.

"You knew?"

Mrs. Palmer gently nodded.

"I promised never to tell you."

"Who asked you to keep the secret?"

Mrs. Palmer hesitated.

"A man."

"What man?"

"He visited once every year."

"He made sure we always had enough money."

Grace frowned.

"Who was he?"

Mrs. Palmer reached into her purse.

"I kept every letter he ever sent."

She handed Brooks a bundle of envelopes.

Each one had been signed simply:

R.

Ethan's hands trembled.

"My father."

Mrs. Palmer nodded.

"He never stopped watching over her."

"He wanted to tell her the truth."

"But every time he came..."

"He said it wasn't safe."

That evening...

Back at headquarters, the letters were carefully examined.

Most contained financial assistance for Grace's education.

Her medical care.

Her college tuition.

One letter caught Ethan's attention.

It had never been mailed.

Apparently Richard had written it but never sent it.

He slowly unfolded it.

"My dearest Grace,"

"If you're reading this, then I finally found the courage to tell you who you really are."

"I have searched for you every day since you disappeared."

"None of this was your fault."

"I hope one day you'll forgive me for not bringing you home sooner."

The letter ended with four heartbreaking words.

"I never stopped trying."

Grace quietly cried as Ethan read the letter aloud.

For the first time in her life...

She knew her father had loved her.

Across town...

Margaret sat alone in her cell.

Her attorney entered carrying another stack of documents.

"The prosecution offered Charles Donovan a plea agreement."

Margaret looked up sharply.

"He accepted?"

"Yes."

"They also have Victor Hale."

Margaret remained silent.

"And Gregory Whitmore?"

The attorney hesitated.

"We still haven't found him."

Margaret looked out the small window.

Almost to herself, she whispered,

"He won't let them."

At that exact moment...

Police surrounded a remote cabin hidden deep in the mountains.

A tip from Gregory's abandoned laptop had led them there.

The tactical team entered cautiously.

The cabin was empty.

But someone had left a tape recorder on the kitchen table.

Brooks pressed Play.

Gregory's weary voice filled the room.

"If you've reached this cabin..."

"I'm already gone."

"Margaret thinks I helped her all these years."

"She never realized I kept copies of everything."

He paused.

"The real evidence isn't here."

"It's buried beneath the old oak tree behind Blackwood Cottage."

"Richard and I hid it together after he discovered what Margaret had done."

"If Margaret ever tried to destroy the truth..."

"Richard wanted one final safeguard."

The recording ended.

Brooks looked at Ethan.

"Your father knew."

Ethan nodded slowly.

"He knew much more than we ever imagined."

Late that night...

Officers returned to Blackwood Cottage.

The old oak tree stood exactly where Richard had described.

Floodlights illuminated the yard.

An evidence team carefully began digging.

After nearly an hour...

A shovel struck metal.

Clang.

The workers uncovered a weatherproof steel chest.

Its lock had rusted but remained intact.

Brooks carefully opened it.

Inside were dozens of sealed files.

Photo albums.

Financial ledgers.

Cassette tapes.

And one thick envelope addressed in Richard Carter's handwriting.

Across the front, it read:

The Truth About Grace—and the Man Who Helped Save Her.

Brooks looked at Ethan.

"This changes everything."

Neither of them realized...

That the answer waiting inside the envelope would reveal an ally they had never suspected—and expose the final piece of Margaret's decades-long conspiracy.
