Chapter 13: The Confession

Chapter 13: The Confession

Detective Brooks stepped into the lobby of Donovan Financial Group with two uniformed officers at his side.

The receptionist immediately recognized the badges.

"Good morning," Brooks said calmly. "We're here to speak with Charles Donovan."

The young woman hesitated.

"He... he's in a meeting."

Brooks held up the arrest warrant.

"I don't think he is."

Without another word, he walked toward the private elevator.

On the top floor...

Charles Donovan frantically stuffed folders into a leather briefcase.

His breathing was uneven.

He had spent nearly thirty years protecting Margaret Carter's secrets.

Now every one of those secrets was closing in on him.

A knock sounded at the office door.

"Mr. Donovan?"

His secretary again.

"The police are here."

Charles closed his eyes.

He looked toward the hidden exit behind the bookshelf.

Then at the photograph on his desk.

It showed him as a much younger man standing beside Richard Carter.

They had once been friends.

The memory filled him with shame.

Slowly...

He stepped away from the hidden door.

"I'm not running anymore."

A minute later...

Detective Brooks entered the office.

Charles stood waiting.

"I assume you have questions."

Brooks placed the warrant on the desk.

"I do."

Charles glanced at it.

"Fraud."

"Conspiracy."

"Obstruction of justice."

He gave a faint, bitter smile.

"I've earned every one of them."

He quietly held out his wrists.

"I won't resist."

An hour later...

Inside the interview room at police headquarters, Charles sat across from Brooks and Ramirez.

A recorder was switched on.

Brooks leaned forward.

"Let's start with Grace Carter."

Charles looked down at his folded hands.

"I knew this day would come."

"Did Margaret order Grace's disappearance?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

Ethan, watching through the observation window, felt his stomach tighten.

Brooks continued.

"Tell us everything."

Charles took a long, shaky breath.

"It began after Richard updated his will."

"Grace was his first child."

"She inherited half of everything."

"When Margaret learned that..."

"She became obsessed."

Charles stared at the table.

"At first, she tried convincing Richard to remove Grace from the will."

"He refused."

"So she came to me."

"What did she ask?"

"She wanted Grace to disappear."

The room fell silent.

"I thought she meant legally."

"A new identity."

"A private boarding school."

"I was wrong."

Brooks asked quietly,

"What really happened?"

Charles swallowed hard.

"Margaret hired two men."

"They took Grace from her nanny while Richard was overseas."

"They left her at St. Anne's under a false court order."

Ethan clenched his fists.

"Did my father know?"

"No."

"Margaret told him Grace had been taken abroad by relatives."

Brooks opened Richard Carter's letter.

"Richard wrote that he spent years searching."

Charles nodded.

"He did."

"I helped him."

Brooks looked surprised.

"You helped?"

Charles lowered his head.

"It was the only decent thing I ever did."

"I secretly followed every lead Richard found."

"But Margaret was always one step ahead."

"She paid people."

"Destroyed records."

"Changed identities."

"By the time we reached each orphanage or foster home..."

"Grace was already gone."

Meanwhile...

At Mercy General Hospital...

Ava completed another physical therapy session.

This time...

She walked the length of the therapy room using only a cane.

Dr. Harper smiled proudly.

"You're improving faster every week."

Ava laughed softly.

"I forgot what it felt like to stand beside Ethan."

Ethan wrapped his arm around her.

"You never have to face anything alone again."

As they embraced...

Ava suddenly became dizzy.

She grabbed Ethan's arm.

"Ava?"

She squeezed her eyes shut.

"I remembered something."

"What?"

"It wasn't just Margaret at the bridge."

"There was another car."

Ethan immediately called Brooks.

Back at headquarters...

Brooks put the phone on speaker.

"Ava?"

Her breathing was uneven.

"I remember seeing a dark blue sedan."

Charles looked up instantly.

His face turned pale.

Brooks noticed.

"You recognize that?"

Charles whispered,

"Oh, no..."

Brooks stared at him.

"What is it?"

Charles rubbed his forehead.

"Margaret wasn't alone."

"Who was with her?"

Charles hesitated.

Then finally answered.

"Her brother."

Everyone in the room froze.

"Ethan has an uncle?" Ramirez asked.

Charles nodded slowly.

"His name is Gregory Whitmore."

"He changed his last name years ago."

"Margaret kept him hidden from everyone."

"What was his role?"

Charles closed his eyes.

"He handled the dirty work."

Brooks quickly wrote down the name.

"Where is Gregory now?"

"I don't know."

"I haven't seen him in years."

"But..."

Charles reached into his jacket.

"I kept something."

He removed an old envelope.

Inside was a faded business card.

Whitmore Recovery Services

An address.

A phone number long disconnected.

Brooks handed it to Ramirez.

"Run everything."

Just then...

An officer hurried into the room.

"Detective!"

"What is it?"

"We searched Charles Donovan's office."

"And?"

"We found a hidden safe."

Brooks looked at Charles.

"You didn't mention that."

Charles sighed.

"I forgot."

Inside the safe...

Officers discovered dozens of cassette tapes.

Each carefully labeled with dates.

One tape immediately caught Brooks' attention.

Meeting — Margaret & Gregory

June 13, 1992

The day before Grace disappeared.

Brooks held up the tape.

"Do you know what's on this?"

Charles nodded.

"I recorded every important meeting."

"Insurance."

"Against Margaret."

"Why didn't you give these to police before?"

Charles looked at Ethan through the glass.

"Because I was a coward."

Late that evening...

The forensic audio lab restored the aging cassette.

Brooks, Ramirez, Ethan, and Ava listened together.

Static filled the room.

Then two familiar voices emerged.

Margaret.

And a man.

Gregory.

Margaret spoke first.

"Richard will never give up the girl willingly."

Gregory laughed.

"Then we'll make sure he doesn't have a choice."

Margaret's voice remained cold.

"Take Grace tomorrow."

"Once she's gone..."

"Everything belongs to Ethan."

Gregory replied,

"And if Richard finds her?"

A long pause followed.

Then Margaret answered with chilling calm.

"He won't."

The tape ended.

No one spoke.

The evidence was overwhelming.

Grace's disappearance had not been a family misunderstanding.

It had been a carefully planned kidnapping.

As Brooks removed the cassette from the player, his phone rang.

He answered immediately.

"Brooks."

A patrol officer spoke urgently.

"Detective..."

"We've located Gregory Whitmore."

Brooks stood.

"Where?"

The answer sent a chill through the entire room.

"At the old Carter lake house."

Brooks looked at Ethan.

"Let's go."

Neither of them knew...

That Gregory Whitmore had been expecting them all along.

And inside the abandoned lake house...

A wall covered with photographs of Grace Carter had been waiting for nearly thirty years.
