Chapter 14: The Lake House

Chapter 14: The Lake House
Police vehicles raced along the winding road that led to the Carter family’s abandoned lake house.
Red and blue lights reflected off the dark water as Detective Brooks pulled to the front of the convoy.
Ethan stepped out of the SUV before the engine had fully stopped.
The old house looked exactly as he remembered from childhood.
A weathered dock stretched into the lake.

The porch swing creaked gently in the evening breeze.
Everything seemed peaceful.
But Brooks knew better.
"Nobody goes in alone," he ordered.
The tactical team nodded.
Within seconds, officers surrounded the property.
The front door was unlocked.
Brooks pushed it open.
The house was silent.
Dust covered the furniture.
A grandfather clock had stopped years ago.
The only sound came from the wind rattling the windows.
Ramirez swept her flashlight across the living room.
"No sign of anyone."
"Keep searching."
The team split up.
Ethan headed toward the upstairs hallway.
He stopped outside a room that had once belonged to his father.
The door was slightly open.
Inside...
Someone had been there recently.
The bed had fresh sheets.
A coffee cup still sat on the nightstand.
Whoever had stayed there had left only hours earlier.
Downstairs, Brooks entered a locked study.
The lock had been forced from the inside.
Drawers were pulled open.
Papers littered the floor.
It looked as though someone had been searching for something in a hurry.
Then Ramirez called out.
"Detective!"
Brooks hurried into the basement.
One entire wall was covered with photographs.
Dozens of them.
Grace Carter.
At six years old.
At eight.
At twelve.
At sixteen.
Then as a young woman.
Every photograph had a date written beneath it.
Someone had been watching Grace for nearly thirty years.
Ethan stared in disbelief.
"My God..."
Brooks stepped closer.
The photographs showed Grace growing up in different cities.
Different schools.
Different jobs.
Whoever had taken them had never lost track of her.
Pinned to the center of the wall was a recent photograph.
Grace looked to be in her early thirties.
She stood outside a small bookstore.
Smiling.
Alive.
Ramirez carefully removed the photo.
Written on the back was an address.
Willow Creek
A small town nearly four hundred miles away.
Ethan looked at Brooks.
"She's alive."
Brooks nodded.
"And someone has always known where she was."
Just then...
An officer entered carrying a laptop.
"Detective."
"We found this hidden under the floorboards."
The computer was old but still functional.
The forensic technician powered it on.
A password screen appeared.
Ethan stared at it for several seconds.
Then typed his father's favorite phrase.
TruthAboveFear
The laptop unlocked.
Folders immediately filled the screen.
Financial records.
Surveillance reports.
Private investigators' notes.
Then one folder labeled:
GRACE
Brooks opened it.
Hundreds of files appeared.
The newest report had been created only two weeks earlier.
Ramirez frowned.
"Someone has been tracking her recently."
Brooks opened the latest report.
It contained Grace's current address.
Employment information.
Daily routine.
And one final line.
Status: Ready for Retrieval.
Ethan felt a chill.
"Retrieval?"
Brooks nodded grimly.
"They weren't planning to kill her."
"They were planning to take her."
Across town...
Margaret sat quietly inside her detention cell.
A guard approached.
"You have another visitor."
Margaret looked surprised.
"I already met with my attorney."
"This isn't your attorney."
She entered the visitation room.
An elderly woman sat waiting.
Margaret frowned.
"I don't know you."
The woman smiled sadly.
"Oh..."
"But I know you."
Margaret remained silent.
"My name is Sister Agnes."
Margaret's face drained of color.
The former director of St. Anne's Children's Home.
The one person Margaret had believed died years ago.
"You..."
Sister Agnes nodded.
"I survived."
Margaret gripped the edge of the table.
"That's impossible."
"I've been waiting nearly thirty years for this conversation."
The nun reached into her handbag.
She placed a small cassette tape on the table.
"I kept one copy."
Margaret stared at it.
"What is that?"
"The conversation you never knew I recorded."
At the lake house...
The forensic technician discovered another hidden file on the laptop.
It required a second password.
After several failed attempts...
A message appeared.
Hint: The place where everything began.
Brooks thought for a moment.
"The bridge?"
"No."
Ethan suddenly remembered something from his father's journal.
"Blackwood Cottage."
He typed:
Blackwood
The folder opened.
Inside was a single video file.
Recorded only forty-eight hours earlier.
Gregory Whitmore appeared on the screen.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Nervous.
He looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this..."
"I'm probably already gone."
Ethan frowned.
"Gone?"
Gregory continued.
"Margaret thinks I stayed loyal."
"I didn't."
"I've spent years protecting Grace from her."
Brooks exchanged a surprised glance with Ramirez.
Gregory sighed heavily.
"I was part of Grace's kidnapping."
"I'll regret that until the day I die."
"But I couldn't let Margaret finish what she started."
He held up a folded map.
"I've marked the place where Grace doesn't even know she's being watched."
"If you want to save her..."
"You have less than twenty-four hours."
The screen went black.
Silence filled the basement.
Brooks looked at the map.
A red circle surrounded one location.
Willow Creek Bookshop.
He folded the map carefully.
"We leave immediately."
As police vehicles sped toward Willow Creek, they were unaware that another SUV had already arrived in town.
A man stepped out, wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses.
He looked across the street at the little bookstore.
Inside, Grace Carter arranged books on a display table, completely unaware that her true identity had just been uncovered.
The man smiled faintly.
He reached into his jacket and quietly whispered,
May you like
"Time to come home."
He opened the bookstore door and walked inside.
