Chapter 17: Richard's Final Truth

Chapter 17: Richard's Final Truth

The evidence team carefully carried the steel chest into the forensic lab.

Detective Brooks placed the thick envelope on the table.

For a long moment, no one touched it.

Ethan stared at his father's handwriting.

It felt as though Richard Carter were speaking to him one last time.

Finally, Brooks broke the seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter and several photographs.

He unfolded the first page.

Richard's familiar handwriting filled every line.

"If this letter is being read, then Margaret's lies have finally begun to collapse."

"I need you to understand one thing."

"Gregory Whitmore was guilty of helping Margaret take Grace."

"But he regretted it almost immediately."

"Three days later, he secretly came to me."

"He confessed everything."

Ethan looked up in surprise.

"So Gregory told my father?"

Brooks nodded.

"It appears so."

He continued reading.

"Gregory helped me locate Grace."

"By then, Margaret had already arranged for her to be moved again."

"We realized that if we brought Grace home immediately, Margaret would simply try to take her again."

"She had too much influence."

"Too many loyal people."

"Too much money."

"So Gregory and I made the hardest decision of our lives."

"We allowed Grace to remain hidden."

"Where Margaret would never think to look."

Grace slowly lowered her eyes.

"So... they knew where I was?"

Ethan gently nodded.

"They were protecting you."

Tears rolled down Grace's face.

"They gave up watching me grow up..."

"So I could stay alive."

Brooks reached for the photographs.

They showed Richard meeting secretly with Mrs. Palmer over the years.

Another showed Richard watching Grace from across the street as she graduated from high school.

Another captured him sitting quietly in the back row during her college graduation ceremony.

Grace covered her mouth.

"He was there..."

"He never missed the important moments."

Ethan smiled sadly.

"He kept his promise."

The final photograph showed Richard standing beside Gregory Whitmore.

The two men appeared older.

Tired.

But determined.

Written across the back was a date.

Six months before Richard's death.

Beneath it, Richard had written:

We finally have enough evidence.

Ramirez opened another folder from the chest.

Inside were copies of private investigation reports.

Bank transfers.

Property records.

Then she found a folded map.

Every location connected to Margaret's crimes had been marked.

Blackwood Cottage.

St. Anne's.

The bridge.

The Carter estate.

One location had been circled repeatedly.

An abandoned warehouse near the city docks.

Brooks frowned.

"Why would Richard mark this place?"

Just then, another envelope slipped from the folder.

Inside was a single note.

If anything happens to Gregory... look here first.

Meanwhile...

At the detention center...

Margaret sat quietly reading a legal document.

Her attorney looked unusually nervous.

"The prosecution is adding new charges."

Margaret barely reacted.

"I expected that."

"They recovered Richard's evidence."

For the first time...

Margaret's calm expression cracked.

"What evidence?"

"We don't know everything yet."

"But they believe Richard documented your actions for years."

Margaret slowly closed the folder in front of her.

Then she whispered,

"So he finally did it."

Later that afternoon...

Police surrounded the abandoned warehouse.

The building overlooked the river.

Rusted shipping containers sat scattered across the property.

Brooks signaled for the tactical team to move in.

The massive warehouse door creaked open.

Inside...

The building appeared empty.

Until Ramirez pointed her flashlight toward the far wall.

"There."

A fresh set of footprints.

Someone had been there recently.

The team followed them to a locked office.

Brooks forced the door open.

The room was filled with filing cabinets.

Most stood empty.

But one cabinet had been welded shut.

An evidence technician used a cutting torch.

Minutes later, the metal door swung open.

Inside sat dozens of videotapes.

Every tape carried the same label.

Project Legacy.

Brooks carefully selected the first tape.

The recording showed Margaret meeting with Victor Hale years earlier.

Another showed Charles Donovan discussing financial transfers.

Another showed Gregory arguing with Margaret.

Then Brooks inserted the final tape.

The date read:

One Week Before Ava's Crash.

Margaret stood in the office.

Gregory faced her.

He looked furious.

The audio was crystal clear.

"I won't help you hurt another innocent person," Gregory said.

Margaret answered coldly.

"You already have."

"I was trying to save Grace."

"And now you're trying to save Ava."

Gregory shook his head.

"I'm done."

Margaret stepped closer.

"If you walk away..."

"I'll destroy you."

Gregory looked directly at the hidden camera.

"I've already copied everything."

The tape ended.

Ramirez looked at Brooks.

"So Gregory turned against her."

"Long before Ava's accident."

Brooks nodded.

"He wasn't hiding from us."

"He was hiding from Margaret."

Just then...

An officer rushed into the warehouse.

"Detective!"

"What is it?"

"We found Gregory's vehicle."

"Where?"

"Behind the building."

Brooks hurried outside.

The SUV was abandoned.

Its engine was cold.

The driver's door hung open.

Inside...

A cell phone rested on the front seat.

Brooks picked it up carefully.

A video message began playing automatically.

Gregory appeared on the screen.

He looked exhausted.

"If you're seeing this..."

"She's already found me."

"I don't have much time."

He took a shaky breath.

"Margaret always believed she won."

"But she never learned the biggest secret."

He smiled faintly.

"Grace isn't the only child Richard protected."

The screen suddenly filled with static.

The video ended abruptly.

Everyone stood frozen.

Ethan looked at Brooks.

"What did he mean?"

Brooks slowly lowered the phone.

"I don't know."

"But I have a feeling..."

"We're about to uncover the final secret Richard Carter spent his life protecting."

Far away, in her detention cell, Margaret stared out the narrow window.

May you like

She had no way of knowing that Gregory's final message had survived.

Or that the words he left behind were about to bring down everything she had fought to control for nearly thirty years.
