Chapter 6 - The Letter She Never Wanted Me To Read

The envelope stayed in Rebecca’s mother’s hand.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The entire chapel felt frozen in time.

A few minutes earlier, this place had been filled with flowers, music, and promises.

Now it felt like a courtroom.

Everyone was waiting for someone to reveal the truth.

And I was standing in the middle of it, trying to understand how my wedding had turned into a nightmare.

I looked at the envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Not printed.

Not copied.

Handwritten.

By Sarah.

Emily’s mother.

My heart started beating faster.

“How do you have that?”

Rebecca’s mother looked at her daughter.

Rebecca immediately shook her head.

“Mom, please.”

But her mother did not listen.

She looked tired.

Like she had been carrying this secret for too long.

“She left it with me.”

I stared at her.

“Why?”

Her eyes softened.

“Because Sarah knew something was wrong.”

The words felt impossible.

Sarah.

The woman who always trusted people.

The woman who believed everyone had good intentions.

She knew something?

I stepped closer.

“What did she know?”

Rebecca’s mother looked at the envelope.

“She knew Rebecca loved you.”

Rebecca looked surprised.

Then relieved.

For a moment, I thought maybe there was an explanation.

Something I had misunderstood.

But then her mother continued.

“She also knew Rebecca was afraid of losing you.”

My expression changed.

“Losing me?”

She nodded.

“Sarah was worried that Rebecca would try to become Emily’s mother instead of accepting her place in Emily’s life.”

Rebecca immediately spoke.

“That’s not true.”

Her voice was shaking.

Her mother looked at her.

“Isn’t it?”

Rebecca looked away.

And once again…

Silence became the answer.

I looked at the envelope.

“Why didn’t anyone give this to me before?”

Nobody responded.

That was the question.

The question that had been sitting in my mind since the beginning.

Why did everyone know something except me?

Daniel stepped closer.

“Because Rebecca asked us not to.”

I turned.

“What?”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“She said you were already struggling.”

I looked at Rebecca.

“You stopped Sarah’s final letter from reaching me?”

Rebecca’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to protect you.”

I shook my head.

“You keep saying that.”

My voice became quieter.

“But every time you say it, I discover another thing you hid from me.”

Rebecca looked down.

“I thought if you read it, you would leave.”

I stared at her.

“You were afraid I would leave because of the truth?”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

The honesty was painful.

Because for the first time, Rebecca was admitting what I already knew.

She had not protected me.

She had protected herself.

I reached for the envelope.

Rebecca’s mother gave it to me.

My hands trembled slightly.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I knew whatever was inside would change something.

I opened it.

The paper was old.

The handwriting was familiar.

I had seen it thousands of times.

Sarah’s handwriting.

The handwriting on birthday cards.

The handwriting on notes she left in my lunch before work.

The handwriting of the woman who loved me.

I unfolded the letter.

And I read the first line.

“Dear Michael…”

My eyes burned.

I had not heard her voice in years.

But somehow, those words brought her back.

I continued reading.

“If you are reading this, then something happened that made you question the people around you.”

I stopped.

I looked up.

Rebecca’s face had changed.

She knew what was coming.

I continued.

“Michael, the most important thing I want you to know is this…”

I swallowed.

“Emily does not need someone to replace me.”

My hand tightened around the letter.

“She needs someone who will protect the bond she has with you.”

I looked at Emily.

She was standing beside the flowers.

Watching me.

Listening.

The next line was harder.

“Please be careful of anyone who believes love gives them the right to make decisions for you.”

The words felt like they had been written yesterday.

Not five years ago.

I looked at Rebecca.

She looked away.

I kept reading.

“Love should never require you to lose the person you are protecting.”

The chapel became silent.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

And that was when I saw the sentence that changed everything.

“Michael, if Rebecca is the person standing beside you when you read this, ask her one question.”

I stopped.

Everyone was watching.

Even Rebecca.

The question was simple.

But it destroyed the last bit of doubt I had.

“Ask her why she was afraid of Emily being the only person who could expose the truth.”

I slowly lowered the letter.

My heart was pounding.

Expose the truth?

What truth?

I looked at Rebecca.

She looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not confused.

Terrified.

“What did Sarah mean?”

Rebecca said nothing.

“Rebecca.”

Her lips trembled.

“I don’t know.”

But this time, I did not believe her.

Because someone who was innocent would ask the same question.

Someone who was innocent would want answers.

Instead, Rebecca looked like someone whose biggest fear had finally arrived.

Daniel stepped forward.

“There is something you still don’t know.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He glanced at Rebecca.

Then at Emily.

Then back at me.

“Sarah did not die believing Rebecca was dangerous.”

I frowned.

“Then what?”

Daniel took a breath.

“She died knowing Rebecca had lied about something important.”

The words hit harder than anything before.

I looked at Rebecca.

“What lie?”

Rebecca’s eyes filled with tears.

She whispered:

“Michael…”

I waited.

But she could not finish.

Then Daniel said the words she could not say.

“The accident that took Sarah’s life…”

He paused.

“Was not the only secret Rebecca kept.”

The chapel went completely silent.

My wedding ring caught the sunlight.

The same ring that was supposed to represent a new beginning.

Now it felt like a warning.

Because the woman standing in front of me was not just hiding a plan.

She was hiding a history.

May you like

And I was about to discover that the note Emily gave me was only the first piece of a much darker truth.
