Chapter 4 - The Family She Tried To Hide

Chapter 4 - The Family She Tried To Hide

The words stayed in the air.

“Her mother’s family.”

I repeated them silently.

Because they did not make sense.

Emily’s mother, Sarah, had been gone for almost five years.

She had no parents involved.

No relatives who visited.

No family members who called.

At least, that was what I believed.

Rebecca had always told me the same thing.

“After Sarah passed away, you and Emily were all she had.”

I believed her.

I had no reason not to.

I was grieving.

I was raising a child alone.

And when Rebecca entered our lives, she became the person who helped me believe happiness was possible again.

But now I was standing outside my own wedding, holding a note that proved she had been hiding something.

And a stranger had just told me there was an entire part of Emily’s family I never knew existed.

I looked at Rebecca.

“Is that true?”

She said nothing.

That silence was enough.

My chest tightened.

“Rebecca.”

She looked at me.

Her eyes were different now.

The confidence was gone.

The perfect smile was gone.

“I was going to tell you.”

I almost laughed.

“After the wedding?”

She looked away.

That answer told me everything.

Emily slowly walked closer.

She grabbed my hand again.

“Daddy…”

I looked down.

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Are they taking me away?”

The question broke something inside me.

I immediately kneeled.

“No.”

I held her hands.

“No one is taking you anywhere.”

She searched my face.

“Promise?”

I swallowed hard.

“Promise.”

Behind me, I heard Rebecca take a breath.

“You are making this sound worse than it is.”

I stood up.

“Then explain.”

She looked at Daniel.

Her expression became angry.

“You had no right to come here.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No right?”

He looked at the guests.

“At least I had the courage to tell him before it was too late.”

Rebecca stepped closer to him.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.”

I watched them argue.

Not like strangers.

Like two people who had been carrying a secret together.

I turned toward Daniel.

“Who are you?”

He looked at me.

“My name is Daniel Parker.”

That name meant nothing.

But the way Rebecca reacted did.

She looked away.

I noticed.

“Why does she know you?”

Daniel hesitated.

Then he answered.

“Because I was the attorney who handled Sarah’s estate.”

My breathing stopped.

Sarah.

Emily’s mother.

I had never heard that name spoken with so much weight.

“What estate?”

Daniel reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a folder.

Rebecca immediately moved forward.

“No.”

The panic in her voice was impossible to hide.

Daniel handed the folder to me.

I opened it.

Inside were copies of legal documents.

Old documents.

Documents I had never seen.

The first page had Sarah’s name.

My hands started shaking.

I turned the page.

Then another.

Then another.

And finally I saw something that made my entire body go cold.

A letter.

Written by Emily’s mother.

I looked at Daniel.

“Why do you have this?”

He looked serious.

“Because Sarah asked me to make sure you received it.”

“When?”

“Before she died.”

The world seemed to tilt.

“Then why didn’t I get it?”

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

I followed his eyes.

And suddenly I understood.

Rebecca had known.

She had known about this letter.

She had known about Sarah’s final wishes.

And she had kept it from me.

I looked at Rebecca.

“How long?”

She said nothing.

“How long have you had this?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

But I could not tell if they were real.

“I was trying to protect you.”

The sentence made me angry.

“From what?”

She looked at Emily.

Then back at me.

“From the truth.”

I opened the letter.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Sarah’s handwriting.

The woman I loved.

The mother of my child.

The woman who left before she could watch Emily grow up.

The letter began with four words.

Words that made my heart stop.

“If you are reading this…”

I continued.

“…then someone has tried to make decisions about Emily without you.”

I looked up.

Rebecca’s face changed.

Because she knew what was coming.

I kept reading.

“My daughter’s father has always been the only person I trusted to protect her.”

My hands tightened around the paper.

Sarah knew.

She knew someone might try to interfere.

She knew someone might attempt to remove Emily from my life.

The next line was even worse.

“If anyone tells you Emily belongs somewhere else, remember this…”

I stopped.

Because the next sentence was written clearly.

“She belongs with the person who never stopped choosing her.”

I looked at my daughter.

Emily was watching me.

She did not understand the legal documents.

She did not understand the betrayal.

But she understood one thing.

Her father was fighting for her.

I looked back at Rebecca.

“Why?”

Her face broke.

Not completely.

But enough.

“I thought I could give her a better life.”

I stared at her.

“You mean a life without me.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

But her voice was weak.

Daniel stepped forward.

“There is another document.”

I looked at him.

“What document?”

He reached into the folder.

“This one was created six months ago.”

My stomach tightened.

Six months ago.

That was when Rebecca started talking about marriage.

That was when she started insisting we needed everything legally organized before the wedding.

I took the document.

The title made my blood run cold.

“Temporary Guardianship Agreement.”

I looked at Rebecca.

“You wanted me to sign this?”

She did not answer.

“Rebecca.”

Her silence was the answer.

I felt betrayed.

Not because she wanted a different future.

Because she had planned it without me.

Using my trust.

Using my daughter’s fear.

Using the day that was supposed to be our wedding.

Then something unexpected happened.

Emily stepped forward.

Her tiny voice cut through the silence.

“Rebecca…”

Everyone looked at her.

The little girl who had been afraid to speak.

The little girl who carried the secret alone.

She looked at the woman in the wedding dress.

“Did you really want me gone?”

Rebecca froze.

For the first time...

She had no prepared answer.

No perfect smile.

No excuse.

Only silence.

And that silence hurt more than any confession.

Because Emily finally had the answer she had been afraid to ask.

Rebecca looked at her.

And whispered:

“I thought it was the only way.”

My heart sank.

Because that sentence meant one thing.

She still believed she was right.

And if Rebecca believed she was right…

Then this was only the beginning.

Because someone who thought they were saving the family…

May you like

Could become the person who destroyed it.
