Chapter 2 - The Smile That Started To Crack

Chapter 2 - The Smile That Started To Crack

The chapel entrance became the quietest place I had ever stood.

Only a few minutes earlier, people were laughing.

They were taking pictures.

They were congratulating me on the future I thought I was about to have.

Now nobody knew what to say.

Rebecca stood in front of me wearing the same beautiful smile that had convinced everyone she was perfect.

But I could see the difference.

I saw the tension behind her eyes.

I saw the way her fingers slowly tightened around her bouquet.

I saw the way she avoided looking directly at Emily.

That was when I realized something.

A person who had nothing to hide would have asked one simple question.

“What happened?”

Rebecca did not ask that.

Instead, she asked:

“Why are you holding that?”

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

I looked down at the folded paper in my hand.

Then back at her.

“You know what this is?”

For the first time, Rebecca hesitated.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

“I don’t understand what you mean.”

The answer was smooth.

Prepared.

Like she had already imagined this moment.

I felt Emily’s small hand holding mine tighter.

She was listening to every word.

She was watching every expression.

And suddenly I understood something painful.

My daughter had been carrying this fear alone.

She had been afraid to tell me because someone she trusted told her not to.

I turned slightly toward Emily.

“Sweetheart, can you go wait by the flowers for a moment?”

Her eyes widened.

She looked worried.

“I’m not leaving you.”

My heart broke hearing those words.

Because a six-year-old should never have to say that.

I kneeled beside her.

“You’re not leaving me.”

I looked directly into her eyes.

“Not today.”

Emily slowly nodded.

A wedding coordinator walked over and gently guided her a few steps away.

But she stayed close enough to see me.

Close enough to know I was still there.

Rebecca watched the entire thing.

Then she looked back at me.

“You’re making this bigger than it is.”

That sentence bothered me more than anything else.

Because she was not denying it.

She was minimizing it.

I stepped closer.

“Then explain it.”

The wind moved through the flowers beside us.

The chapel suddenly felt colder.

Rebecca looked around.

She noticed the guests watching.

She lowered her voice.

“Not here.”

I almost smiled.

Not here.

That was what people said when they were afraid the truth would be heard.

“Why not here?”

She looked uncomfortable.

“Because this is our wedding day.”

I looked at the chapel behind her.

The place where I was supposed to promise her forever.

“The wedding can wait.”

Her expression changed.

“What?”

I held up the note.

“This cannot.”

Rebecca’s face became pale.

She looked toward the guests.

Then toward the chapel.

Then back at me.

“You don’t trust me?”

The question surprised me.

Because she was trying to make this about my trust.

Not about what she had done.

I stared at her.

“I trusted you enough to bring you into my daughter’s life.”

The words hit harder than I expected.

Rebecca looked away.

For a moment, I saw something.

Regret.

Or maybe fear.

I could not tell anymore.

Before I could continue, a voice interrupted us.

“Is everything okay?”

It was Rebecca’s sister, Claire.

She walked toward us with a worried expression.

Claire had always been kind to me.

She had attended family dinners.

She had helped prepare the wedding.

But now she looked nervous.

Too nervous.

Rebecca immediately answered.

“Everything is fine.”

Claire looked at me.

Then at the note.

Her face changed.

Just like Rebecca’s had.

That small reaction told me something important.

This was not just Rebecca’s secret.

Someone else knew.

I looked between them.

“What is going on?”

Neither woman answered.

And that silence was louder than any confession.

The priest stepped outside the chapel.

“Should we begin?”

Nobody moved.

The guests waited.

The music continued softly in the background.

But the wedding had already changed.

Because I was no longer standing there wondering if I was making the right choice.

I was standing there wondering how long I had been lied to.

Rebecca finally spoke.

“Can we please talk privately?”

I looked at her.

Then at Claire.

Then at Emily.

“No.”

Rebecca’s eyes widened.

“No?”

I shook my head.

“Not privately.”

Her face tightened.

“If you care about me, you will not do this in front of everyone.”

That sentence almost convinced me.

Almost.

Because for two years, I had loved this woman.

I had imagined growing old with her.

I had imagined Emily having another person who cared for her.

But then I remembered my daughter’s face.

The fear in her eyes.

The way she whispered:

“I didn’t know what else to do.”

I looked at Rebecca.

“I care about my daughter more.”

The silence that followed was absolute.

Claire looked down.

Rebecca stopped pretending.

For the first time, the perfect bride disappeared.

And standing there was someone I barely recognized.

She took a deep breath.

“Fine.”

Her voice became colder.

“You want the truth?”

I said nothing.

She looked at the note.

Then at Emily.

Then back at me.

“The truth is…”

She paused.

And before she could finish, another voice came from behind us.

A man.

A voice I did not recognize.

“Rebecca, you should have handled this before today.”

Everyone turned.

Standing near the parking area was a man wearing a dark suit.

He looked directly at Rebecca.

Not me.

Not the guests.

Her.

And the moment Rebecca saw him…

All the color left her face.

Because whoever that man was…

He was not supposed to be there.

May you like

And he knew the truth.
