Chapter 1 - The Note Before The Vows

Chapter 1 - The Note Before The Vows

The white chapel had never looked more beautiful.

The morning sunlight reflected against the old stone walls.

Fresh white flowers decorated the entrance.

A gentle breeze moved through the garden, carrying the soft sound of wedding music from inside.

Nearly two hundred guests had gathered to witness what everyone believed would be the happiest moment of my life.

But they did not know the wedding would never reach the vows.

They did not know a single folded piece of paper would destroy everything.

Ten minutes before the ceremony began, I found my six-year-old daughter standing alone near the chapel steps.

Emily was wearing the white flower girl dress she had chosen herself.

The tiny pearl buttons on her dress reflected the sunlight.

Her blonde ponytail was slightly loose.

The flowers around her head were falling apart.

But what scared me most was not her appearance.

It was her expression.

Emily was not nervous.

She was terrified.

I walked toward her immediately.

“Emily?”

She looked up at me.

Her blue eyes were filled with tears.

For a moment, she said nothing.

She simply stared at me like she was trying to decide whether she could trust me with the truth.

Then she reached into her small pocket.

Her fingers pulled out a folded piece of paper.

The paper was wrinkled.

Almost crushed.

Like someone had tried to hide it.

She held it toward me.

“Daddy…”

Her voice was quiet.

“I didn’t know what else to do.”

My heart tightened.

I took the paper from her hand.

“Sweetheart, what is this?”

She looked toward the chapel doors.

Then back at me.

“Please read it.”

Something inside me told me this was not a child being scared about a wedding.

This was something else.

I unfolded the paper.

And the moment I saw the handwriting, my entire body went cold.

I knew that handwriting.

Rebecca.

The woman I was about to marry.

The woman who had spent the last two years telling me she loved my daughter.

The woman who promised me she would never make Emily feel like an outsider.

I looked down at the message.

The words were short.

But they felt heavier than anything I had ever read.

“After the wedding, things will change.”

“Your father has already agreed.”

“You will go somewhere better suited for you.”

I stopped reading.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

I looked at Emily.

“What does this mean?”

She lowered her head.

A tear fell onto her dress.

“She told me not to tell you.”

My chest tightened.

“Who told you not to tell me?”

Emily looked toward the chapel entrance.

Her voice became even smaller.

“Rebecca.”

For several seconds, I could not move.

The wedding music continued.

Guests laughed inside.

Someone outside was taking pictures.

The entire world continued normally.

But mine had stopped.

Rebecca.

The person I trusted.

The person who held Emily’s hand when she was afraid.

The person who promised she wanted to become part of our family.

She had written those words.

Before I could ask Emily anything else, the chapel doors opened.

Everyone turned.

The music changed.

Rebecca appeared.

She looked like the perfect bride.

Her flowing lace wedding dress moved softly behind her.

Her blonde hair was perfectly arranged.

Her smile was beautiful.

The guests admired her.

They saw love.

They saw happiness.

But I saw something different.

I saw the woman whose secret was now hidden inside my jacket pocket.

Rebecca started walking toward us.

Then she noticed Emily standing beside me.

Her smile remained.

But only slightly.

Then her eyes moved downward.

To the note in my hand.

And everything changed.

For a brief second…

Rebecca stopped breathing.

She recovered quickly.

Almost nobody noticed.

But I did.

Because I knew her.

I saw fear.

She walked closer.

“Darling…”

Her voice was gentle.

“The ceremony is about to begin.”

I stared at her.

I did not answer.

Her eyes moved between me and Emily.

Then back to the note.

“Is everything okay?”

That question almost made me laugh.

Because nothing was okay.

Emily grabbed my hand.

Rebecca noticed.

Her expression became harder to read.

“Why is she still standing here?”

The words were soft.

But they felt different.

Cold.

I moved my daughter closer.

“She stays with me.”

The silence around us grew heavier.

Rebecca looked surprised.

Only for a moment.

Then she smiled again.

“That’s not what we planned.”

Those words escaped before she could stop them.

My eyes narrowed.

“What did you say?”

Rebecca froze.

The perfect bride disappeared for one second.

Then she looked away.

“I mean… the wedding schedule.”

But it was too late.

I heard it.

Emily heard it.

Rebecca knew it too.

She had revealed something.

Something she never wanted me to question.

The chapel doors remained open behind her.

The priest waited.

The guests waited.

Everyone expected me to walk inside.

Everyone expected me to say my vows.

But I looked at my daughter.

Then I looked at the woman standing in front of me.

And for the first time that morning…

I wondered if the person I was about to marry had been a stranger all along.

May you like

The ceremony did not begin.

And nobody knew that the real story was only starting.
