Chapter 10 - The Person Who Was Never Supposed To Be There

Nobody spoke after Daniel finished reading the message.
The chapel had become completely silent.
Not the peaceful silence from before the wedding.
Not the quiet moment before a celebration.
This was the silence of people realizing something much bigger had been hidden.
I looked at Daniel.
“Read it again.”
He looked at the phone screen.
The message was still there.
Rebecca was not the only person at the accident scene.
I felt my heartbeat getting faster.
Because that sentence changed everything.
For years, I had lived with one painful truth.
Sarah was gone.
An accident took her away.
That was the story everyone gave me.
But now I was standing there discovering that the final moments of Sarah’s life were surrounded by people who never told me the truth.
I looked at Rebecca.
“Who else was there?”
Her face became pale.
“I don’t know.”
The answer came too quickly.
I stared at her.
“You don’t know?”
She shook her head.
“I only saw Sarah.”
Daniel looked at her carefully.
“Are you sure?”
Rebecca looked at him.
“Yes.”
But Daniel did not look convinced.
Neither was I.
Because someone had sent that photograph.
Someone had been waiting five years to reveal this.
Someone who knew exactly where the truth was buried.
I turned toward Daniel.
“Can we find out who sent it?”
He looked at his phone.
“I can try.”
“Do it.”
He stepped away.
Rebecca watched him.
Then she looked at me.
“Michael.”
I did not answer.
“Please.”
I looked at her.
“Please what?”
She swallowed.
“Please don’t think I had anything to do with Sarah’s death.”
The words were painful.
Because they revealed something.
She was not only afraid of losing me.
She was afraid of what I might believe.
I studied her face.
“I don’t know what to think anymore.”
That sentence hurt her.
I could see it.
But it was the truth.
The woman I trusted had hidden legal documents.
She had hidden conversations with Sarah.
She had hidden the fact that she was at the accident scene.
How could I know where the lies ended?
A sudden movement caught my attention.
Claire.
Rebecca’s sister.
She had been silent the entire time.
Too silent.
I looked at her.
“You knew.”
Her eyes widened.
“What?”
“You knew Rebecca was there that night.”
Claire looked away.
That was all I needed.
I stepped closer.
“Did you?”
Rebecca immediately turned.
“Claire.”
But Claire closed her eyes.
“I didn’t want this to happen.”
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?”
Claire looked at me.
“I knew Rebecca met Sarah that night.”
The guests reacted quietly.
I felt anger rising.
“How long have you known?”
“Five years.”
Five years.
The same number of years I had spent grieving.
The same number of years Emily had grown up without her mother.
And everyone around me had pieces of the truth.
Everyone except me.
I looked at Rebecca.
“How many people knew?”
Nobody answered.
That was the answer.
Too many.
I walked away from them for a moment.
I needed air.
I needed to breathe.
Because the woman I had planned to marry was standing behind me.
My daughter was watching everything.
And I was realizing that my entire relationship with Rebecca had been built on information she chose not to give me.
Then Emily’s voice stopped me.
“Daddy?”
I turned around.
She was holding something.
A small object.
Something I had never seen before.
“What is that?”
She looked down.
“I found it in Rebecca’s room.”
My entire body became tense.
“Emily…”
She stepped closer.
“It was hidden.”
Rebecca immediately reacted.
“What?”
Her voice was sharp.
Everyone noticed.
Emily held the object tighter.
It was a small silver key.
Attached to it was a tiny tag.
A tag with a number written on it.
I looked at Rebecca.
She looked like she had seen a ghost.
“Where did you get that?”
Emily looked scared.
“You told me not to touch your drawer.”
The room became silent.
Rebecca’s expression changed.
“What drawer?”
Emily looked confused.
“The one in your room.”
I looked at Rebecca.
“You let my daughter near your private things?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
But Emily continued.
“I saw the key when you were talking on the phone.”
Rebecca’s face became even more nervous.
“What phone call?”
Emily looked at her.
“The one where you said…”
She stopped.
I kneeled beside my daughter.
“What did she say, sweetheart?”
Emily looked at Rebecca.
Then whispered:
“She said the truth had to stay locked away until after the wedding.”
The silence that followed was unbearable.
Rebecca stepped back.
“No.”
Her voice was barely audible.
“She misunderstood.”
But I looked at the key.
A number.
A hidden place.
A secret.
And suddenly I understood.
The note Emily gave me was not the only thing Rebecca tried to hide.
There was something else.
Something physical.
Something important enough to lock away.
I looked at Daniel.
“Find out where this key belongs.”
He nodded.
Rebecca stepped forward.
“Michael, listen to me.”
I looked at her.
“Where does it go?”
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
That was the moment I knew.
Whatever was behind that key…
Rebecca did not want me to find it.
A few minutes later, Daniel returned.
His expression had changed.
“What?”
He looked at the key.
Then at me.
“I know where it belongs.”
My heart tightened.
“Where?”
He took a breath.
“A storage facility outside the city.”
Rebecca’s face went completely white.
Because she knew.
She knew exactly what was inside.
Daniel looked at her.
“What did you keep there?”
Rebecca whispered:
“Nothing.”
But nobody believed her.
Because people who have nothing to hide…
Do not look terrified when someone finds the key.
I looked at my daughter.
Then at Rebecca.
Then at the chapel where I was supposed to say my vows.
The wedding was over.
But the truth was just beginning.
May you like
And now I was about to open the one thing Rebecca had spent years keeping locked away.
