Chapter 12 - The Voice From The Past

Chapter 12 - The Voice From The Past

The old phone sat in the middle of the storage room.
Nobody touched it.
Nobody moved.
Because everyone understood what it was.
A final message.
A forgotten piece of the past.
A truth that had been hidden for five years.
The screen continued glowing.
The audio file remained open.
“If something happens to me.”
I looked at Rebecca.
She was staring at the phone like it was something dangerous.
Not because she was confused.
Because she knew exactly what it contained.
I noticed.
And so did Daniel.
“Rebecca…”
She looked at him.
Her eyes were full of fear.
“Don’t.”
The single word made the room colder.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Why are you afraid of a recording?”
Rebecca did not answer.
I picked up the phone.
My hands were shaking.
Not from fear.
From anger.
Because I had spent years wondering if Sarah had suffered alone.
I had spent years imagining her final moments.
And now I had a chance to hear her voice again.
I pressed play.
For several seconds, there was only static.
Then…
A familiar voice filled the room.
“Michael…”
My heart stopped.
Sarah.
It was really her.
Emily was too young to remember her mother’s voice.
But I remembered.
Every word.
Every laugh.
Every moment.
I closed my eyes.
The recording continued.
“If you are listening to this, something happened that I was afraid of.”
I opened my eyes.
Rebecca looked down.
Sarah continued.
“I don’t know who will hear this first.”
A pause.
“But I need someone to know the truth.”
The room became completely silent.
Sarah’s voice sounded tired.
But calm.
“I met with Rebecca tonight.”
Rebecca closed her eyes.
“I wanted to believe I was wrong about her.”
My breathing slowed.
“She told me she loved Emily.”
A pause.
“And I wanted to believe that.”
Rebecca wiped her tears.
“But love is not only about feelings.”
Sarah’s voice became softer.
“It is about choices.”
I looked at Rebecca.
She looked broken.
Sarah continued.
“Rebecca believes she is saving this family.”
My chest tightened.
“But she doesn’t understand that a family cannot be built by removing someone from it.”
Emily moved closer to me.
I held her hand.
The recording continued.
“She asked me to change my legal documents.”
Daniel looked at me.
Everyone knew what was coming.
“She wanted to become Emily’s legal guardian.”
Rebecca whispered:
“No…”
But the recording continued.
“I told her no.”
A pause.
“Because Emily already has a father.”
My eyes burned.
Sarah’s voice became emotional.
“Michael is not perfect.”
I almost smiled sadly.
“But he loves that little girl more than anything in this world.”
I looked at Emily.
She was listening.
“She does not need someone to replace me.”
A pause.
“She needs someone who respects the love she already has.”
Then the recording changed.
The sound became louder.
Like the phone had moved.
Sarah’s breathing became faster.
And then she said something that made everyone freeze.
“Rebecca, if you are still listening…”
Rebecca’s face turned white.
Sarah continued.
“I know you followed me.”
Nobody moved.
The silence was unbearable.
I looked at Rebecca.
“What?”
Rebecca shook her head.
“I didn’t…”
But Sarah’s voice continued.
“I know you are scared.”
A pause.
“But you need to understand something.”
The recording became quiet.
Then Sarah said:
“If anything happens to me tonight, Michael deserves to know why.”
The room felt like it was closing around us.
Daniel looked shocked.
Rebecca looked destroyed.
I continued listening.
Sarah’s voice became more urgent.
“The reason I cannot trust Rebecca with Emily is not because she doesn’t love her.”
A pause.
“It is because she loves the idea of being needed more than she understands what Emily needs.”
Nobody spoke.
Then came the sound of a car door.
Sarah gasped.
And suddenly…
Another voice appeared.
A man’s voice.
Not Daniel.
Not me.
Someone else.
The voice was angry.
“You should have stayed out of this.”
Everyone froze.
Rebecca looked terrified.
I turned toward her.
“Who is that?”
She said nothing.
The recording continued.
Sarah’s breathing became frightened.
“Rebecca?”
The man spoke again.
“You ruined everything.”
A loud noise.
Then static.
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
The phone screen went dark.
For several seconds, the only sound was our breathing.
Then I looked at Rebecca.
“Who was that man?”
She looked at the floor.
“I don’t know.”
The answer came too quickly.
I stepped closer.
“Rebecca.”
She looked at me.
“I swear.”
But I had heard that before.
Every secret.
Every hidden document.
Every explanation.
They all started the same way.
A denial.
Then the truth.
Daniel picked up the phone.
“The recording was edited.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
He examined the device.
“There is a missing section.”
My stomach tightened.
“How much?”
He looked serious.
“Almost three minutes.”
Three minutes.
Three minutes missing from Sarah’s final message.
Three minutes that could explain everything.
Then Daniel noticed something else.
A small symbol appeared on the phone screen.
A cloud backup icon.
He looked surprised.
“This phone synced automatically.”
I frowned.
“With what?”
Daniel stared at the screen.
“Another device.”
“Whose?”
He looked at Rebecca.
And this time…
She did not deny it.
She just whispered:
“My father’s.”
The room went silent.
Rebecca’s father.
A person nobody had mentioned.
A person who had never appeared at the wedding.
A person who somehow had a copy of Sarah’s final recording.
I looked at Rebecca.
“Where is he?”
She hesitated.
Then answered:
“He died three years ago.”
My heart sank.
Because if Rebecca’s father was dead…
Then someone else had access to his account.
Someone else had been protecting the secret.
Daniel looked at the phone again.
His expression changed.
“What?”
He turned the screen toward me.
A new notification had appeared.
A message.
From the unknown backup device.
Only one sentence.
“You were never supposed to hear this.”
The storage room became silent.
Because suddenly we understood.
Someone had been watching.
Someone had known we would find the phone.
Someone had been waiting.
And whoever sent that message…
May you like
Was still hiding in the shadows.
