Chapter 14 - The Truth Waiting At The Hale Estate

Chapter 14 - The Truth Waiting At The Hale Estate

The old Hale estate stood at the edge of the city.
A place that most people had forgotten existed.
The massive gates were covered with rust.
The trees around the property had grown wild.
The house itself looked abandoned.
But I knew one thing.
Abandoned places did not send messages.
Someone wanted me there.
Someone wanted me to find something.
The car stopped in front of the gate.
Daniel looked at me.
“You don’t have to do this alone.”
I looked at the message again.
Come alone if you want the truth about Sarah.
“I’m not going alone.”
Daniel nodded.
“I know.”
I looked toward the back seat.
Emily was asleep.
The exhaustion of the day had finally caught up with her.
For a moment, I just watched her.
My daughter.
The reason I was still standing.
The reason I needed the truth.
I turned back.
“She stays with Claire.”
Daniel looked surprised.
“You trust Claire?”
I thought about it.
No.
Not completely.
But I saw something in Claire’s eyes.
Regret.
Real regret.
And right now, I needed every person willing to tell the truth.
Claire nodded.
“I’ll protect her.”
I looked at her.
“Not because I trust you.”
She lowered her eyes.
“Because she deserves someone to protect her.”
Claire nodded.
“I understand.”
I stepped out of the car.
The cold air hit my face.
The old mansion waited ahead.
The same place where Rebecca’s father had lived.
The same place where secrets had been hidden.
Daniel walked beside me.
We reached the front door.
It was already open.
That made me stop.
Someone was expecting us.
I looked at Daniel.
“Stay behind me.”
He nodded.
We entered.
The house smelled old.
Dust covered the furniture.
The walls were decorated with expensive paintings.
A reminder of a wealthy family that had once controlled everything around them.
We walked deeper inside.
Then we heard it.
A sound.
A voice.
A recording playing somewhere in the house.
We followed the sound.
It led us to the study.
The room was dark.
But on the desk was a small device.
Another recording.
Daniel pressed play.
A familiar voice filled the room.
Sarah.
My heart stopped again.
“Michael…”
The recording continued.
“I know you may never hear this.”
A pause.
“But if you do, then the truth finally reached you.”
I closed my eyes.
Sarah’s voice was the only thing I could hear.
“I need you to know something.”
A deep breath.
“Rebecca did something wrong.”
I looked at Daniel.
He looked serious.
“But she was not the person who caused my accident.”
My heart changed.
All this time…
I had believed Rebecca was hiding the worst secret.
But Sarah’s words suggested something else.
“She made choices I cannot forgive.”
Sarah continued.
“But she was also afraid.”
A pause.
“Someone else was controlling her.”
The room became colder.
“Someone who threatened her.”
I looked around.
The old mansion.
The hidden recordings.
The missing evidence.
Sarah continued.
“Victor Hale knew about everything.”
Daniel whispered:
“Victor.”
Sarah’s voice became quieter.
“He discovered I found the financial records.”
The recording paused.
Then:
“He threatened Rebecca.”
I felt confused.
“Threatened her?”
Sarah answered herself.
“He told her that if she told Michael the truth, Emily would suffer.”
My chest tightened.
Emily.
Again.
Everything came back to my daughter.
Sarah continued.
“Rebecca was wrong to hide everything.”
A pause.
“But she was not the enemy.”
I looked down.
Five years of anger.
Five years of believing one person destroyed everything.
And now the truth was becoming more complicated.
Sarah’s final words made everyone silent.
“Michael, if you are hearing this…”
Her voice cracked.
“Please remember one thing.”
I waited.
“Protect Emily.”
The recording ended.
The room became silent.
Daniel looked at me.
“She knew.”
I nodded.
“She knew something was coming.”
Then we heard a sound behind us.
A door closing.
We turned.
A man stood in the hallway.
Older.
Gray hair.
Calm expression.
But I recognized him immediately.
Not because I had met him.
Because I had seen him before.
In the photograph.
The man near Sarah’s car.
Victor Hale.
He looked at me.
And smiled.
“I was wondering when you would finally find this place.”
My body became tense.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Victor.”
The man smiled.
“You have grown old, Daniel.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“You’re supposed to be gone.”
Victor laughed.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
I looked at him.
“You sent the messages.”
He looked at me.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Victor slowly walked into the room.
“Because someone needed to know the truth.”
I almost laughed.
“The truth?”
I pointed toward the hidden recordings.
“You spent five years hiding it.”
Victor’s smile disappeared.
“No.”
He looked at Rebecca’s old documents.
“I spent five years waiting.”
“For what?”
He looked directly at me.
“For Rebecca to finally admit what she did.”
My heart tightened.
“What are you talking about?”
Victor reached into his coat.
He placed a small envelope on the desk.
An envelope with Sarah’s handwriting.
Again.
But this time…
The name on the front was not mine.
It was Rebecca’s.
Victor looked at me.
“Ask your future wife what happened after Sarah’s accident.”
I stared at him.
“Rebecca?”
Victor smiled.
“Yes.”
“Because the biggest secret was never the accident.”
He stepped closer.
“It was what happened the morning after.”
The room became silent.
Daniel looked at Victor.
“What did she do?”
Victor looked toward the door.
Then back at me.
“She made a choice.”
A pause.
“A choice that changed Emily’s entire life.”
I picked up the envelope.
My hands were shaking.
Because somehow…
I knew.
Whatever was inside…
Was the final secret.
The one Rebecca had spent years protecting.
I opened it.
And the first sentence made my blood run cold.
“Rebecca, if you are reading this, then Michael finally knows.”
I looked at Rebecca’s name.
Then at Victor.
Then at Daniel.
Because after everything…
The truth was finally here.
May you like
And it was waiting for me on the next page.
