Chapter 6: The Bloodline Revealed

The silence in the grand ballroom of the Metropolitan Museum was absolute. The clinking of crystal champagne flutes had ceased. The string quartet had frozen with their bows hovering over their violins.
Hundreds of the most powerful people in the city were holding their breath, their eyes darting between the furious, red-faced Vanessa, the composed billionaire Daniel Vance, and the trembling young woman in the emerald gown.
Eleanor Vance, a woman whose mere whisper could tank the stock market, still had her iron-clad grip on Emily’s wrist. Her thumb traced the silver, crescent-moon birthmark with a reverence that shocked everyone who knew the typically ice-cold matriarch.
"Tell me," Eleanor demanded, her voice shaking with an emotion no one had ever seen her display. "Your mother. What was her name?"
Emily swallowed hard, shrinking slightly under the blinding glare of the paparazzi flashes going off outside the glass doors. "Her... her name was Clara. Clara Thorne."
Eleanor’s eyes searched Emily’s face frantically, scanning her high cheekbones, the shape of her jaw, the deep amber hue of her eyes. "No," the older woman whispered. "That was the name she hid behind. What was her maiden name? Before she ran? Think, child! Did she ever mention a silver locket? A key with a crest?"
Emily gasped, her free hand instinctively flying to her chest. "How... how do you know about the locket? She made me promise never to open it. She said it was dangerous."
Eleanor released Emily’s wrist and took a staggering step backward. Daniel immediately caught his grandmother by the elbow, his slate-gray eyes wide with confusion.
"Grandmother, what is going on?" Daniel asked, his voice low and urgent.
Eleanor didn't look at him. She turned her steely gaze toward Vanessa, who was still standing amidst the scattered photographs of Emily in a maid's uniform, looking utterly bewildered.
"You foolish, arrogant, wretched little girl," Eleanor hissed at Vanessa, her voice carrying across the silent room like a whip crack. "You dare throw trash at her feet? You dare call her a maid?"
Vanessa balked, taking a step back. "She is a maid! I have proof! She scrubs toilets, Eleanor! She’s a fraud!"
Smack.
The sound echoed through the cavernous ballroom. Eleanor Vance had just struck Vanessa Sterling across the face with the back of her diamond-ringed hand.
Vanessa shrieked, clutching her cheek, exactly as Emily had done just twenty-four hours prior.
"Security!" Eleanor barked, her cane striking the marble floor with a deafening crack. "Remove this vile creature from my sight. And if her father utters a single word of complaint, tell him I will personally liquidate his entire portfolio by breakfast."
Guards descended instantly, grabbing Vanessa by the arms. She screamed, thrashing wildly, her designer dress tearing at the seams as she was dragged out the doors, kicking and crying in utter humiliation. Marcus Vance, seeing the tides turn so violently, slinked back into the shadows of the crowd, his face pale with panic.
Eleanor turned back to the room. She stood perfectly straight, raising her chin.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Eleanor announced, her voice ringing with absolute authority. "Allow me to introduce my grandson’s brilliant partner. She is not a maid. She is the sole surviving daughter of my late, dearest friend, Seraphina Sinclair. She is Emily Sinclair. The sole heir to the Sinclair Shipping fortune."
The room erupted.
The name Sinclair was legend. The family had disappeared from high society twenty years ago after a tragic, mysterious accident, leaving a billion-dollar empire locked in a blind trust.
Emily couldn't breathe. The room was spinning. The flashing lights, the screaming reporters, the gasps of the elite—it all blurred together into a suffocating wave of sound. Sinclair? Heiress?
Her knees buckled.
Before she could hit the floor, strong arms caught her. Daniel scooped her into his chest, holding her tight against his tailored tuxedo.

"I've got you," Daniel whispered fiercely into her hair. "I've got you."
As the world faded to black, the last thing Emily saw was the terrified look in Daniel's eyes. The fake engagement had just become the most dangerous reality in the world.
