Chapter 1: The Sound of Shattered Glass

The silence in the grand foyer was suffocating. It was heavy, thick, and electric, pressing down on everyone who stood on the black-and-white checkered marble.
Emily’s cheek burned. The stinging pain from Vanessa’s slap radiated across her jaw, but the physical ache was nothing compared to the humiliation. She stood there in her simple, starched gray housekeeping uniform, a stark contrast to Vanessa’s custom-tailored sleek black designer dress.
A moment ago, Emily had been a thief. A low-class criminal who had bitten the hand that fed her.
But now, the red timestamp on the iPad screen in Daniel’s hand blinked like a beacon of absolute truth.
10:14 AM.
The black-and-white footage replayed on a loop. It showed Vanessa, glancing over her shoulder with calculated paranoia, before slipping the glittering diamond statement necklace directly into Emily’s open brown leather handbag.
Emily hadn't touched it. She hadn't even been in the room.
"Daniel..." Vanessa’s voice broke the silence. It was thin, trembling, completely stripped of the venom she had weaponized just seconds before. "Daniel, please. Let me explain. The camera... it doesn't show the whole context."
Daniel Vance, the billionaire heir to the Vance corporate empire, slowly raised his eyes from the screen. He was a man composed of sharp angles and cold restraint, but right now, his slate-gray eyes burned with a quiet, terrifying fury.
"Context?" Daniel’s voice was dangerously low. It didn't echo in the cavernous foyer; it cut straight through the air like a blade. "I just watched you plant a five-million-dollar heirloom in my employee's bag. Then I stood here and watched you strike her across the face for a crime you committed."
Vanessa stepped forward, her high heels clicking frantically against the marble. "She’s manipulating you! She’s just a maid, Daniel! I did it to protect you. I saw how she looks at you. She's a gold digger, trying to weave her way into this family—"
"Enough!" Margaret, the head housekeeper who had been clutching her pearls in shock, finally spoke up, her voice quivering with indignation. "Miss Vanessa, Emily has worked here for two years with an impeccable record."
"Shut up, you old bat!" Vanessa snapped, her carefully curated high-society mask fully slipping to reveal the desperate, ugly truth beneath.
"Vanessa." Daniel didn't yell, but the sheer command in his voice froze her in place. He stepped between Vanessa and Emily. His broad shoulders acted as a human shield, blocking Vanessa’s predatory glare from reaching Emily’s tear-stained face.
"The engagement is over," Daniel said. His words were precise. Final.
Vanessa gasped as if she had been physically struck. "You can't do that! Our families—the merger—my father will destroy your upcoming IPO!"
"Let him try," Daniel replied coldly. "Security will escort you to your car. Your belongings will be packed and sent to your father's estate by the evening. If you ever set foot on my property again, I will not only release this security footage to every major tabloid in the country, but I will press charges for assault and filing a false police report."
Two burly security guards in dark suits stepped forward immediately.
Vanessa’s face went pale, then flushed with rabid anger. She looked at Daniel, realizing she had lost, before locking her hateful gaze onto Emily.
"You think you've won?" Vanessa hissed, dragging her words through her teeth as the guards took her by the arms. "You’re nothing but dirt on my shoes, Emily. This isn't over. I will ruin you."
Emily flinched, instinctively taking a step back. But she didn't look away.
As Vanessa was dragged out the heavy oak front doors, screaming obscenities that echoed across the manicured lawns, the heavy doors slammed shut.
The silence returned. But this time, it belonged to Emily.

Daniel turned around to face her. His harsh, intimidating demeanor softened by a fraction. He looked at the red handprint blooming across her pale cheek.
"Come to my study," Daniel said quietly. "We need to talk."
