Chapter 15: The Fall of the King

Julian screamed, a guttural sound of pure agony, as the metal spike pierced his leg.

His grip on Emily loosened for a fraction of a second. It was all she needed. Emily threw her weight forward, breaking free from his chokehold and dropping flat against the marble floor.

"Now!" Emily screamed.

Daniel didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger.

Bang.

The single gunshot echoed through the grand hall. Julian Rossi’s pistol clattered to the ground as he fell backward, clutching his shoulder where Daniel’s bullet had shattered his collarbone.

Brooks and the Vance security team surged forward, swarming the remaining cartel members and disarming Julian, pinning the bleeding mafia boss to the ground with a knee to his spine.

Daniel dropped his rifle, his tactical boots sliding on the marble as he ran to Emily. He slid to his knees, pulling her off the floor and crushing her against his chest.

"Are you hurt? Did he touch you?" Daniel demanded frantically, his hands running over her face, checking for injuries.

"I'm okay," Emily sobbed, burying her face in his neck, breathing in the scent of gunpowder and his familiar cologne. "You came for me."

"I will always come for you," Daniel swore, pressing a desperate kiss to her forehead. "Always."

"How touching," a sneering voice interrupted.

Daniel and Emily turned. Arthur Sinclair was standing near the back exit of the hall, holding a gun pointed directly at them. The patriarch’s pristine tuxedo was covered in dust, his face twisted in desperate rage.

"You ruined everything!" Arthur screamed, spit flying from his lips. "The merger, the cartel alliance, the trust fund—twenty years of planning, destroyed by a maid and a spoiled billionaire!"

Daniel pushed Emily behind him, shielding her once again. "It's over, Arthur. Put the gun down."

"If I can't have the Sinclair empire, no one can," Arthur hissed, aiming the barrel directly at Emily’s chest.

"Arthur, stop!"

The new voice didn't belong to Daniel or his men.

The heavy doors at the back of the hall swung open. Eleanor Vance stood there, flanked by heavily armed federal agents wearing FBI windbreakers.

Arthur froze, staring at the formidable matriarch.

"It's over, Arthur," Eleanor said, her voice ringing with grim finality. "Your offshore accounts have been frozen. The Sinclair board has unanimously ousted you. And these agents have just uncovered the financial trail proving you paid for the hit on your own brother twenty years ago. You possess nothing."

Arthur looked at the FBI agents, then at Emily. The gun in his hand trembled. He had lost his power, his money, and his legacy. With a defeated, hollow sigh, he dropped the weapon.

Agents swarmed him immediately, slapping handcuffs onto his wrists and reciting his Miranda rights.

As Arthur was dragged past Emily, he didn't look at her. He just stared blankly ahead, a broken king walking to his cell.

Emily let out a massive, shuddering breath. The nightmare was finally over. The cartel was dismantled. Her father was in federal custody. She was safe.

"We need to get you out of here," Daniel said softly, wrapping his jacket around her shoulders to cover the torn red velvet dress. "We're going home. We're going to see Leo."

The mention of her brother's name brought a genuine, beautiful smile to Emily’s exhausted face. "Yes. Please. Take me to Leo."

Hours later, the Vance private helicopter touched down on the helipad of the city medical center. Daniel had moved Leo to the absolute highest-security VIP wing, guarded by an army of men.

Emily ran down the sterile white hallway, Daniel right behind her. She pushed open the door to Room 402, expecting to see her little brother playing video games or watching cartoons.

Instead, she stopped dead in her tracks.

The room was completely frantic. Four doctors and half a dozen nurses were surrounding Leo’s bed. Machines were screaming in long, terrifying continuous tones.

"What's happening?!" Emily screamed, rushing forward.

The lead pediatric cardiologist, Dr. Aris, turned to her, his face grave and pale. "Miss Sinclair, I'm so sorry. The stress from the cartel's assassination attempt yesterday... it caused a severe rupture. His heart is failing. He’s in complete organ cascade."

"No, no, no," Emily cried, grabbing Daniel’s arm to keep from collapsing. "Fix him! Give him a transplant! Daniel has the money, buy him a heart!"

"It's not about money, Emily," Dr. Aris said gently, his voice breaking. "Leo has an incredibly rare O-negative blood subtype. He needs a direct genetic match for a partial valve and tissue transplant immediately. You are not a match. Your mother was not a match."

Emily stared at the doctor, the horrific truth dawning on her.

"There is only one living person on earth with his exact genetic markers," Dr. Aris said quietly.

Emily’s blood turned to absolute ice. She looked up at Daniel, who was already realizing the horrifying reality of the situation.

To save her brother's life, Emily was going to have to make a deal with the man sitting in a federal maximum-security holding cell.

Arthur Sinclair was the only one who could save him.
