Chapter 5: The Gala Debut

The flashbulbs were blinding.

Hundreds of paparazzi lined the red carpet leading up to the grand steps of the Metropolitan Museum, where the Vance Foundation Gala was being held.

When the sleek black Rolls-Royce pulled up, a hush fell over the frantic crowd. The rumors had been swirling all day. The engagement between Daniel Vance and Vanessa Sterling was broken. Who would the billionaire arrive with?

The driver opened the door. Daniel stepped out first, looking devastatingly handsome in a sharp, midnight-blue tuxedo. He didn't smile at the cameras. Instead, he turned back to the car and offered his hand.

A delicate hand wearing long black silk gloves took his.

When Emily stepped out onto the red carpet, the crowd went completely silent for exactly one second before the frenzy erupted.

She was a vision. The emerald-green silk dress clung to her curves perfectly, featuring a daring slit up the thigh and a dramatic sweetheart neckline. Around her neck rested a stunning, vintage diamond choker—a piece from Daniel’s private vault, entirely different from the one Vanessa had tried to frame her with.

"Smile," Daniel murmured, wrapping his arm firmly around her waist. His grip was strong, grounding her as the terrifying wall of cameras flashed like lightning. "You're doing perfectly. Just breathe."

"I feel like I'm going to pass out," Emily whispered through a picture-perfect smile.

"Lean on me," he replied instantly.

They walked up the steps, completely synchronized. To the outside world, they looked like a deeply in-love power couple. The press shouted questions, but Daniel ignored them, guiding Emily into the grand ballroom.

Inside, the crystal chandeliers cast a golden glow over the city's elite. As Daniel and Emily entered, the string quartet's music seemed to fade into the background. Every head in the room turned.

Whispers broke out immediately.

"Who is she?"
"She's stunning."
"I heard she's a European heiress."

Daniel leaned down, his lips brushing her ear. "See? They're eating out of the palm of your hand. You belong here."

Emily finally let out a breath, feeling a surge of confidence. Maybe she could actually pull this off. Maybe she could survive this year, save her brother, and walk away clean.

"Daniel! Darling!"

The shrill, piercing voice cut through the elegant chatter like a siren.

The crowd parted as Vanessa pushed her way to the front. She was wearing a violently red dress, looking frantic and deeply unhinged. Marcus Vance trailed a few steps behind her, wearing a smug, dangerous smirk.

"Security," Daniel barked immediately, stepping in front of Emily.

"Oh, don't pretend you don't know me, Daniel!" Vanessa laughed loudly, making sure the entire ballroom, including the board of directors, was watching. She pointed a perfectly manicured finger directly at Emily.

"Look at her!" Vanessa shouted to the crowd. "Look at the great Daniel Vance's new prize! Did you tell them, Daniel? Did you tell the board of directors who you brought to the most prestigious event of the year?"

Emily’s blood ran cold. She squeezed Daniel's hand tightly.

"Vanessa, you are trespassing. Leave now, or I will have you arrested," Daniel said, his voice echoing with absolute authority.

But Vanessa wasn't intimidated. She reached into her clutch and pulled out a stack of printed photographs, throwing them into the air like confetti. They fluttered down onto the marble floor.

Guests gasped as they looked at the photos. It was Emily. In her gray housekeeping uniform, scrubbing a toilet. Emily taking out the trash. Emily wiping down a kitchen counter.

"She's a maid!" Vanessa screamed triumphantly. "She cleans my toilets! She is a penniless, debt-ridden servant, and Daniel is lying to all of you!"

The ballroom erupted into chaotic murmurs. Several board members looked at Daniel with sheer horror.

Vanessa stepped forward, her eyes locked on Emily with pure, venomous hatred. "Take off the dress, you pathetic little rat. You're nothing but trash in a shiny wrapper."

Emily trembled. The humiliation was crushing. She wanted to run. She wanted to flee the ballroom and hide forever.

But then, an older woman stepped out from the crowd. She was draped in diamonds and walked with an elegant cane. It was Eleanor Vance, Daniel’s notoriously ruthless grandmother and the true matriarch of the family.

Eleanor ignored Vanessa entirely. She walked straight up to Emily, squinting at her face, and then down at her hands.

Eleanor's eyes widened in absolute shock.

She grabbed Emily’s left hand, staring intently at a small, silver birthmark shaped like a crescent moon on Emily's wrist—a mark Emily had always hidden under her watch.

"Dear God in heaven," Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling. The entire room went dead silent. Eleanor looked up, tears welling in her sharp eyes.

"Where did you get this mark?" Eleanor asked, her voice cracking. "Tell me your mother's name. Right now."
