Chapter 2: The Billionaire's Proposition

Emily’s hands shook as she held the cold glass of water Margaret had pressed into her palms.

She sat on the edge of a plush leather sofa in Daniel’s private study, a room bathed in the rich scent of mahogany, old books, and expensive bourbon. It was a room she usually only entered to dust the bookshelves or polish the antique brass lamps. Sitting on the furniture felt like breaking a sacred rule.

Daniel stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the sprawling estate. The afternoon sun cast long, dramatic shadows across his chiseled profile. He loosened his silk tie and unbuttoned the top of his collar, exhaling a long, tired breath.

"I owe you a massive apology, Emily," Daniel said, finally turning to face her.

Emily looked down at her battered sneakers, suddenly hyper-aware of her frayed laces. "You don't owe me anything, Mr. Vance. You found the truth. You stood up for me. That's more than most employers would do."

"She slapped you," Daniel said, his jaw tightening. "Under my roof. She used my mother’s necklace—a sacred family heirloom—to frame an innocent woman just because of her own paranoid insecurities. I should have ended the arrangement with her months ago."

Emily stayed quiet. It wasn't her place to comment on her boss’s high-profile, highly toxic relationship. She just wanted to go back to her small, cramped room above the garage, call her little brother, and cry until her chest stopped aching.

"I need to resign, Mr. Vance," Emily said softly, the words tasting like ash in her mouth.

Daniel’s head snapped toward her. "What? No. Absolutely not. You are not the one at fault here."

"I know," Emily said, finally looking up into his intense gray eyes. "But Vanessa is a powerful woman. She promised to ruin me, and she meant it. I’m just a maid. I don't have lawyers. I don't have millions of dollars. I have a younger brother who needs an expensive heart surgery in three months, and if I get caught in the crossfire of your billionaire drama, I will lose everything. I need a quiet life. I have to go."

Daniel walked over and sat in the armchair opposite her, leaning forward, his elbows resting on his knees. He looked at her not as a housekeeper, but as an equal.

"How much?" Daniel asked.

Emily blinked, confused. "How much what?"

"How much for your brother's surgery? To clear your debts. To make you feel perfectly safe."

"Mr. Vance, I can't take your money—"

"Two million dollars," Daniel interrupted, his voice steady and serious.

Emily’s heart stopped. She stared at him, sure she had misheard. "What?"

"I will put two million dollars into a trust for your brother's medical care by tomorrow morning. I will hire the best cardiologists in the country. And I will provide you with a personal security detail so Vanessa can never get within a hundred feet of you."

Emily swallowed hard, her mind spinning. "Why would you do that? You don't owe me that kind of money for a misunderstanding."

"It's not a gift," Daniel said, his eyes darkening with a dangerous, calculating glint. "It's compensation. For a job."

"A job?" Emily asked, her voice barely a whisper. "What kind of job?"

"Vanessa was right about one thing," Daniel said, leaning closer. "My father's board of directors is going to panic when they hear the engagement is broken. They want me married and stable before I take over as CEO next month. Vanessa’s father will try to orchestrate a hostile takeover using this scandal."

Daniel reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a thick, legal document, sliding it across the polished wood table toward her.

"I don't just need a maid anymore, Emily," Daniel said softly. "I need a fiancé."
