Chapter 3: Signing Away the Soul

Emily stared at the thick stack of papers on the desk as if it were a venomous snake ready to strike.

A fake fiancé.

The idea was absurd. It was the plot of a cheap romance novel she would buy at the grocery store, not the reality of her grueling, paycheck-to-paycheck life. She was Emily Thorne, a twenty-three-year-old college dropout drowning in medical debt. He was Daniel Vance, a twenty-eight-year-old titan of industry whose face regularly graced the cover of Forbes and GQ.

"You're out of your mind," Emily breathed, shaking her head. "No one would ever believe it. The world knows me as the girl who scrubs your floors."

"The world doesn't know you at all," Daniel corrected, tapping a pen against the desk. "They know the uniform. Tomorrow, the uniform disappears. We tell the press that we've been secretly seeing each other for six months. We say that Vanessa found out, went into a jealous rage, and tried to frame you to get you out of the picture."

Emily frowned, her mind racing. "That... actually makes sense. It makes her look unhinged, and it explains why you broke the engagement."

"Exactly," Daniel said, a hint of an impressed smile playing on his lips. "It neutralizes her father’s smear campaign before it begins. The board of directors loves a good underdog romance story. It humanizes me. It makes my image accessible."

"But why me?" Emily asked, wrapping her arms around herself. "You know hundreds of models, actresses, heiresses. Women who actually know how to use the right fork at a dinner party. Women who won't embarrass you."

Daniel’s gaze softened. He looked at her cheek, where the red mark from Vanessa's hand was finally beginning to fade into a dull pink.

"Because I trust you," Daniel said quietly.

The three words hung in the air, heavy and profound.

"I've watched you for two years, Emily. You work tirelessly. You send every dime you make back home to your brother. You are honest, you are fiercely loyal, and unlike every other woman in my social circle, you don't care about my money." He paused. "And you stood your ground against Vanessa. I need someone who won't break under pressure."

Emily looked down at the contract.

Two million dollars.

It wasn't just money. It was Leo's life. It was the end of the late-night panic attacks, the end of dodging calls from debt collectors, the end of watching her little brother grow weaker every day.

She reached out with a trembling hand and picked up the heavy Montblanc pen Daniel offered her.

"What are the rules?" she asked, her voice steadier now.

"The contract lasts for exactly one year," Daniel explained, pointing to a highlighted section. "You will live in the master suite with me—though we will sleep in separate beds, of course. You will attend all public functions as my partner. You will receive an unlimited black card for wardrobe and styling. And above all, no matter what happens, you cannot fall in love with me."

Emily let out a short, cynical laugh. "Don't worry, Mr. Vance. Arrogant billionaires aren't really my type."

Daniel smirked, a genuine, handsome expression that made Emily’s stomach do a strange, unscripted flip. "Good. Then we have a deal."

Emily signed her name on the dotted line.

As the ink dried, Daniel stood up and checked his Rolex. "Pack your bags, Miss Thorne. We have a lot of work to do. Tomorrow night is the annual Vance Foundation Charity Gala."

Emily froze. "Tomorrow? But... I don't know how to act at a gala! I don't have anything to wear!"

"Leave that to me," Daniel said, dialing a number on his sleek phone. "By tomorrow night, the world won't see a housekeeper. They will see the future Mrs. Vance."
