Chapter 14: Blood and Silk

The music drifting through the grand hall of the Rossi compound was elegant, classical, and entirely chilling.

Emily stood in front of a massive gilded mirror. She was dressed in a blood-red velvet gown, custom-fitted, with a suffocatingly tight corset. Around her neck rested a heavy diamond collar—a literal leash provided by Julian.

Her wedding day.

Arthur stood behind her, adjusting his tuxedo cuffs in the mirror’s reflection. "You look radiant, my dear. Truly a Sinclair."

"If mom were here, she would kill you," Emily said, her voice completely dead. She had run out of tears. All that was left inside her was a hollow, burning rage.

"Your mother was weak," Arthur dismissed casually. "Now, smile. The priest is waiting downstairs. Julian’s lieutenants have flown in from Palermo to witness the union. Do not embarrass me."

Arthur turned to open the bedroom door.

As he looked away, Emily made her move. She reached over to the vanity table, silently grabbing the heavy, silver-plated handle of a comb, snapping the sharp metal tail off the end, and sliding it into the hidden pocket of her velvet gown.

She wasn't going to be a victim. If Julian tried to put that ring on her finger, she was going to drive the metal spike directly into his carotid artery.

Arthur escorted her down the grand marble staircase. The great hall was filled with terrifying men in dark suits, all bearing the subtle, lethal grace of career criminals. At the altar, standing before a trembling priest, was Julian Rossi.

Julian smiled as Emily approached. It was the smile of a predator watching a trapped rabbit.

"Perfect," Julian whispered as Arthur handed Emily over to him. Julian grabbed her hands, his grip like a vice.

The priest began speaking in rapid, nervous Latin. Emily felt her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. She slowly slipped her hand toward the hidden pocket of her dress, her fingers brushing against the cold, sharp metal.

Wait for it, she told herself. Wait until he leans in.

"Do you, Julian Rossi, take Emily Sinclair..." the priest stammered.

Suddenly, a deafening explosion rattled the very foundations of the estate.

Dust and plaster rained down from the vaulted ceilings. The heavy oak front doors of the compound were blasted entirely off their hinges, flying across the room and crushing two of Rossi’s armed guards.

Gunfire erupted.

The great hall descended into absolute chaos. Rossi’s men drew their weapons, screaming in Italian, returning fire into the smoke-filled entryway.

Through the thick, black smoke, the Vance private security team breached the room, moving with terrifying military precision. Laser sights cut through the haze.

And leading the charge, wearing a bulletproof vest over his dress shirt and wielding a tactical rifle, was Daniel Vance.

"Daniel!" Emily screamed.

Julian snarled like a cornered animal. He drew a silver pistol from his tuxedo jacket, wrapped his arm around Emily’s neck in a brutal chokehold, and pressed the barrel of the gun directly to her temple.

"Hold your fire!" Daniel roared, throwing his hand up. His men immediately stopped shooting.

The silence that followed was deafening, broken only by the groans of the wounded men on the floor.

"You stupid, arrogant boy," Julian spat, dragging Emily backward toward the altar. "You bring a corporate security team into my house? I am the Rossi cartel!"

"Let her go, Julian," Daniel said, his voice deadly calm, keeping his rifle trained squarely on Julian’s face. "The building is surrounded. We have air support. You pull that trigger, and my men will turn you into mist."

Arthur Sinclair, cowering behind a marble pillar, shouted, "Kill him, Julian! Shoot the Vance boy and let's get out of here!"

Julian’s eyes darted wildly between Daniel and his dead men on the floor. He tightened his grip on Emily’s neck, cutting off her airway. She gasped, clawing at his arm.

"I don't leave without my bride," Julian sneered, pulling the hammer back on his pistol with a terrifying click.

Emily stopped struggling. She looked into Daniel’s eyes across the chaotic room. He looked terrified for her.

She wasn't going to let Daniel die for her.

Emily reached into her pocket, gripped the sharp metal tail of the comb, and drove it backward, burying it deep into Julian’s thigh.
