Chapter 8: The Vice Chairman's Secret

Chapter 8: The Vice Chairman's Secret
The emergency Board meeting ended in tense silence.
No one lingered in the conference room.
No one wanted to be the last person standing.
As the executives filed out, Detective Laura Bennett quietly watched from the hallway. Every expression, every whispered conversation, every nervous glance was carefully noted.

One face, however, stood out.
Charles Whitmore.
Unlike the others, he wasn't angry.
He wasn't defensive.
He was calm.
Too calm.
As he walked past Bennett, he offered a polite smile.
"I hope you find whoever is responsible."
"So do I," Bennett replied.
Charles nodded once and continued toward the elevators.
The detective watched until the doors closed behind him.
Then she turned to Daniel Reyes.
"Run a full background check on Whitmore."
Daniel raised an eyebrow.
"You think it's him?"
"I think he has the best poker face I've seen in years."
Charles entered the underground parking garage and climbed into the back seat of a waiting black sedan.
His driver looked in the rearview mirror.
"Everything all right, sir?"
Charles loosened his tie.
"For now."
"And Donovan?"
Charles's expression hardened.
"He survived."
The driver remained silent.
Charles looked out the window.
"That complicates things."
"Should I contact him?"
"No."
Charles's voice was firm.
"I'll handle it myself."
Meanwhile, Michael Donovan remained unconscious in the hospital's intensive care unit.
He had suffered a fractured arm, three broken ribs, and a severe concussion.
Outside his room stood two armed police officers.
Detective Bennett wasn't taking any chances.
Dr. Amelia Brooks met her in the hallway.
"He's stable."
"When will he wake up?"
"Hours."
"Maybe tomorrow."
Bennett sighed.
"We need him alive."
Dr. Brooks nodded.
"So do I."
On the maternity floor, Khloe was finally allowed to walk a few steps with assistance.
Marcus stayed beside her every moment.
"Slowly," he said.
She laughed softly.
"I'm pregnant, not ninety."
"You nearly gave me a heart attack."
"I noticed."
She squeezed his hand.
"I'm sorry."
Marcus stopped walking.
"No."
He gently touched her cheek.
"You never apologize for surviving."
Khloe smiled through tears.
"I love you."
"I love you more."
For the first time since the attack, they shared a moment untouched by fear.
Neither of them noticed someone watching from the end of the hallway.
A hospital volunteer wearing blue scrubs.
The volunteer quietly lowered a phone after taking several photographs.
Seconds later, the images were sent to an encrypted number.
Khloe is recovering. Security remains tight.
The reply came almost instantly.
Continue watching.
Later that afternoon, Detective Bennett visited Marcus.
"We've increased protection around Michael Donovan."
Marcus nodded.
"Good."
"But there's something else."
She placed several printed photographs on the table.
"Do you recognize this man?"
Marcus examined the images.
They showed Charles Whitmore entering the hospital parking garage.
"No."
"This was taken an hour after the Board meeting."
Marcus frowned.
"What about it?"
"He drove to an abandoned office building on the east side."
"And?"
"He stayed exactly twelve minutes."
"What happened inside?"
"We don't know."
"There aren't any cameras."
Marcus looked up.
"You followed him?"
"We're following everyone."
She paused.
"And Charles Whitmore is becoming increasingly interesting."
Across town, Charles unlocked the door to an old office that had been vacant for years.
The lights remained off.
A second man waited inside.
"You shouldn't have come here," the man said.
Charles removed his gloves.
"We have a problem."
"I heard."
"Donovan survived."
The man cursed under his breath.
"He talked?"
"Not much."
"But he mentioned a Board member."
The room fell silent.
Finally, the man spoke.
"We need to leave the country."
Charles shook his head.
"Running now would make us look guilty."
"What do you suggest?"
Charles calmly poured himself a glass of water.
"We stay exactly where we are."
"And if Donovan wakes up?"
Charles looked directly at him.
"He won't identify us."
"How can you be sure?"
Charles smiled faintly.
"Because he never actually saw my face."
That evening, Chairman William Carter returned to Khloe's room carrying a small box.
She looked surprised.
"Uncle William?"
He smiled warmly.
"I brought something."
Inside the box lay dozens of old family photographs.
Khloe picked one up.
It showed her as a little girl sitting on William's shoulders during a Fourth of July picnic.
She laughed.
"I remember this."
"You insisted on carrying the biggest flag."
Marcus smiled as he watched them.
William became serious.
"I wanted to remind you of something."
Khloe looked at him.
"You're stronger than you think."
She quietly nodded.
"I'm trying."
"I know."
William gently squeezed her shoulder.
"And you're not facing this alone."
Later that night, Dr. Brooks checked on Michael Donovan one last time before ending her shift.
His vital signs were stable.
The police officers remained outside.
Everything appeared secure.
She signed the chart and left.
Ten minutes later...
A nurse wearing a surgical mask approached Michael's room pushing a medication cart.
One of the officers looked up.
"I don't recognize you."
The nurse smiled behind the mask.
"I'm covering the night shift."
"Name?"
The nurse reached into a pocket as if searching for an ID badge.
Instead...
A fire alarm suddenly sounded throughout the hospital.
The officers instinctively turned toward the hallway.
Sprinkler alarms echoed across the floor.
People began rushing in every direction.
During the confusion, the masked nurse quietly stepped into Michael's room.
The door closed.
Inside, Michael's eyes slowly opened for the first time.
His vision was blurry.
He saw only a silhouette approaching his bed.
The figure picked up a syringe already filled with clear liquid.
Michael struggled to move.
The masked nurse leaned closer.
"I'm sorry," the stranger whispered.
"But you know too much."
The syringe moved toward Michael's IV line—
Just as the room's door burst open.
"Step away from the patient!"
Detective Bennett stood in the doorway, her service weapon aimed straight ahead.
The masked intruder froze.
For one split second, neither of them moved.
Then the intruder threw the syringe across the room, shoved a medical cart into Bennett's path, and sprinted toward the emergency stairwell.
"Stop!"
Bennett gave chase.
But as she reached the stairwell door, she found it swinging shut.
The intruder had vanished once again.
Back inside the room, Michael clutched Detective Bennett's sleeve with surprising strength.
His lips trembled as he whispered three words.
May you like
"It was Charles."
Then he slipped back into unconsciousness.
