Chapter 16: The Letter

Chapter 16: The Letter

A heavy silence settled over the farmhouse.

No one moved.

Grace looked from Detective Bennett to William, her confusion growing by the second.

"Why would someone be looking for me?"

William didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he unfolded Vivian's letter with trembling hands.

"I think it's time we all knew the truth."

Marcus gently guided Khloe—who had insisted on accompanying them despite the doctor's objections—to a nearby chair.

"You should sit."

"I'm staying," Khloe said firmly.

Marcus nodded. He knew there was no changing her mind.

William took a slow breath and began reading.

William,

If you're reading this, then I have either disappeared or Charles has finally learned that Grace exists. I prayed this day would never come.

Seven years ago, a young woman arrived at our hospital with a newborn daughter. She was dying after a tragic accident. She had no family she could trust, only fear that dangerous people would use her child for their own gain.

Before she passed away, she begged us to protect her baby.

You honored that promise.

I volunteered to raise Grace as my own.

The DNA report you sealed was never created to hide a scandal. It existed only to prove Grace's biological identity should she ever need it in the future.

You sealed the record because you wanted her to have a normal childhood—not one overshadowed by wealth, inheritance, or people who saw her as an opportunity.

If Charles ever finds this report, he will try to use Grace to seize control of everything you've built.

Please don't let that happen.

— Vivian

William lowered the letter.

The room was completely silent.

Grace's eyes filled with tears.

"So..."

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"I'm... adopted?"

Vivian had never told her.

William nodded gently.

"Yes."

Grace stared at the floor.

"My whole life..."

"You were loved every single day," William said softly. "That part was never a lie."

Marcus picked up the DNA report.

He carefully reviewed the first page.

Most of the medical information meant little to him.

Then he reached the final page.

His eyes widened.

He looked at William.

"This report..."

William slowly nodded.

"It confirms Grace's biological father."

Khloe looked between them.

"Who is he?"

William hesitated only a moment.

"My younger brother."

Marcus frowned.

"The one who died?"

"Yes."

Khloe's eyes widened.

"That means..."

William finished the sentence.

"Grace is my niece."

Grace covered her mouth in shock.

She had spent her entire life believing she had no family.

Now, in a matter of minutes, everything had changed.

Detective Bennett quietly closed the folder.

"So Charles wanted this report because..."

"He believed proving Grace's identity would allow him to manipulate the Carter Family Trust," William replied.

Marcus nodded.

"He wasn't after Grace."

"He was after what her name represented."

William looked at Grace.

"But she was never a weapon."

"She was family."

Before anyone could say another word, Daniel Reyes's radio crackled.

"Chief!"

Daniel answered immediately.

"Go ahead."

"We've got movement."

"Where?"

"A black SUV just entered the property."

Everyone looked toward the front window.

Two vehicles rolled slowly up the long gravel driveway.

Marcus instinctively stepped in front of Khloe.

William carefully folded Vivian's letter and slipped it back into the envelope.

Detective Bennett unholstered her service weapon.

"Everyone stay behind us."

Outside, Charles Whitmore climbed out of the lead SUV.

He looked toward the farmhouse with an almost peaceful expression.

Only two men accompanied him.

He wasn't dressed like a fugitive.

He wore a tailored navy suit, polished shoes, and a neatly folded pocket square.

He looked more like a businessman arriving for a meeting than a man wanted by the police.

Charles slowly raised both empty hands.

"I'd like to talk."

Detective Bennett stepped onto the porch.

"You're under arrest."

Charles smiled politely.

"I imagine I am."

He didn't move.

Instead, his eyes shifted toward the front window.

Toward Grace.

"So that's her."

Grace instinctively stepped backward.

William's face hardened.

"You stay away from her."

Charles looked genuinely disappointed.

"I've spent seven years searching for the wrong document."

He laughed softly.

"It turns out..."

He looked at Grace again.

"...the real secret was never a file."

"It was a person."

Marcus stood beside William.

"You nearly got my wife and unborn child killed."

Charles didn't deny it.

"I made mistakes."

"Mistakes?" Marcus's voice rose. "You manipulated Isabella into attacking Khloe."

"I convinced an unstable woman to act on feelings she already had."

Marcus took a step forward.

Detective Bennett raised a hand.

"Marcus."

He stopped, though every muscle in his body was tense.

Charles sighed.

"I never intended for anyone to die."

Khloe spoke for the first time.

"You expected me to disappear."

Charles looked at her.

"I expected you to step aside."

Khloe shook her head.

"You don't even hear yourself anymore."

Police vehicles suddenly surrounded the property.

More officers poured onto the lawn with weapons drawn.

Charles glanced around.

"So this is how it ends."

Detective Bennett nodded.

"It can end peacefully."

Charles smiled faintly.

"I was hoping for that."

Very slowly, he reached into the inside pocket of his suit jacket.

Every officer raised their weapons.

"Hands where we can see them!"

Charles stopped.

"I'm not armed."

He slowly removed...

A folded photograph.

Nothing else.

He handed it to William.

William looked down.

It was the same photograph from decades earlier.

William.

Vivian.

Charles.

Three young executives standing proudly in front of the hospital they had helped build.

Charles smiled sadly.

"We really believed we were changing the world."

William quietly looked at the picture.

"We did."

Charles lowered his head.

"I just forgot why."

Without another word, he placed both hands behind his back.

Detective Bennett stepped forward and secured the handcuffs around his wrists.

"You are under arrest for conspiracy, attempted murder, obstruction of justice, evidence tampering, and multiple related offenses."

Charles offered no resistance.

As officers escorted him toward the patrol car, he looked back one final time.

Not at William.

Not at Marcus.

At Grace.

"I'm sorry," he said quietly.

Grace didn't answer.

She simply stood beside the family that had chosen to protect her long before she even knew they existed.

For the first time in years...

She wasn't alone.

But as Charles was placed into the back of the patrol car, Detective Bennett's phone vibrated.

She answered briefly.

Her expression immediately changed.

She turned to William.

"There's one more problem."

William frowned.

"What now?"

Bennett took a slow breath.

"Isabella Rossi has requested an emergency meeting with prosecutors."

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

"What does she want?"

Bennett looked down at the notification.

"She says she has information about someone..."

She paused.

May you like

"...who helped Charles from the very beginning."

Charles wasn't the only conspirator after all.
