Chapter 2: The Recording No One Could Escape

Chapter 2: The Recording No One Could Escape

Marcus's world narrowed to the flashing red light above the operating room doors.

Every second felt like an hour.

He paced the hallway, his bloodstained tuxedo drawing worried glances from passing nurses. His phone buzzed relentlessly with calls from business partners, reporters, and members of the Thorne Foundation who had heard rumors that something terrible had happened at the gala.

He ignored every call.

Nothing mattered except Khloe and their baby.

A few feet away, Elaine Parker sat quietly, her hands still shaking. She had organized hundreds of charity galas over the years, but she had never witnessed violence like this.

"I'm so sorry," she whispered.

Marcus stopped pacing.

"This isn't your fault."

"I should have gone upstairs with her."

Marcus looked toward the operating room.

"No. The only person responsible is the one who attacked my wife."

His voice was calm, but beneath the surface burned a fury unlike anything Elaine had ever seen.

Downstairs, inside the hospital's secure surveillance office, Chairman William Carter stood in front of a large monitor.

Security Chief Daniel Reyes locked the door behind them.

Only four people were allowed inside.

William.

Daniel.

The hospital's director of security technology.

And the hospital's legal counsel, Rebecca Sloan.

"This recording never leaves this room without authorization," William said.

Rebecca nodded.

"Understood."

Daniel started the playback.

The video showed Khloe entering the suite alone. She looked exhausted, rubbing her temples before removing her high heels.

For nearly two minutes, nothing happened.

Then the door opened.

Isabella Rossi entered.

She didn't knock.

She walked in as if she owned the room.

William folded his arms.

"No invitation," he observed.

"No," Daniel replied.

The conversation began without audio, but the cameras clearly captured every movement.

Khloe pointed toward the door.

She wanted Isabella to leave.

Instead, Isabella stepped closer.

The argument intensified.

Khloe never raised a hand.

She never threatened Isabella.

Then, without warning—

Isabella shoved her.

Khloe slammed into the marble table exactly as everyone had found her.

Rebecca covered her mouth.

"My God..."

The footage continued.

Khloe struggled to stand while shielding her stomach.

Instead of helping her...

Isabella attacked again.

A second shove.

Then the kick.

The pointed heel struck Khloe's side with horrifying force.

Daniel paused the video.

The room fell silent.

No one spoke for several long seconds.

Finally, William said quietly,

"Continue."

The final moments showed Marcus bursting into the suite.

Only after seeing him did Isabella suddenly begin crying.

She pointed at Khloe.

She pretended to be the victim.

Then the recording ended.

Rebecca slowly removed her glasses.

"Legally, this couldn't be clearer."

Daniel nodded.

"There was no self-defense."

"No."

"No accident."

"No."

Rebecca looked directly at William.

"This was a deliberate assault."

William remained silent.

His eyes never left the frozen image of Isabella standing over Khloe.

Finally, he spoke.

"Duplicate the recording."

Daniel looked up.

"How many copies?"

"Three."

"One for hospital legal."

"One for law enforcement."

"And one stays in my personal custody."

Daniel nodded immediately.

"No one else gets access."

William added one more instruction.

"And notify the police."

Meanwhile, Isabella sat alone in a private conference room under security supervision.

She still believed she had a chance.

She had powerful friends.

Excellent attorneys.

Years of experience manipulating difficult situations.

Someone would find a way to fix this.

The door opened.

Her attorney, Victor Langford, hurried inside.

"I came as soon as I heard."

Isabella stood.

"Thank God."

Victor looked concerned.

"What happened?"

She quickly explained her version of events.

"Khloe became emotional."

"She attacked me."

"I defended myself."

Victor listened carefully.

Then he asked one simple question.

"Were there witnesses?"

"Marcus walked in afterward."

"Anyone else?"

"Only the event coordinator."

Victor relaxed slightly.

"That's manageable."

Isabella finally smiled.

"I knew you'd know what to do."

Before Victor could answer, another knock came at the door.

Daniel Reyes entered.

"Ms. Rossi."

"Yes?"

"The police have been notified."

Her smile disappeared.

Victor frowned.

"On what grounds?"

Daniel handed him a tablet.

"The grounds are on this recording."

Victor pressed play.

Thirty seconds later...

His face drained of color.

He skipped ahead.

Watched the shove.

The second attack.

The kick.

Then Marcus entering.

Victor stopped the video.

He slowly looked at Isabella.

"You told me she attacked you."

"I..."

"You lied."

"I panicked."

Victor closed the tablet.

"I don't represent clients who lie to me."

"Victor, wait—"

He stood.

"I can't defend a story that video evidence disproves."

"You can't leave!"

"I already have."

Without another word, Victor walked out.

The heavy door closed behind him.

For the first time all evening...

Isabella was completely alone.

Upstairs, Dr. Amelia Brooks finally stepped out of the operating room.

Marcus was beside her before she could say a word.

"How are they?"

Dr. Brooks offered a tired smile.

"Your wife is stable."

Marcus exhaled in relief.

"And the baby?"

"The heartbeat is strong."

He closed his eyes.

"Thank God."

"But..."

His heart sank again.

"There was partial placental separation."

Marcus stared at her.

"We stopped the bleeding, but the next few days are critical."

"Will the baby survive?"

"We're optimistic."

"Optimistic?"

Dr. Brooks answered honestly.

"Stress or additional complications could trigger premature labor."

Marcus looked through the glass at Khloe sleeping in recovery.

"So she needs complete rest."

"Absolutely."

"No visitors except immediate family."

Marcus nodded.

"I'll make sure of it."

Dr. Brooks hesitated.

"There's something else."

"What?"

"We found bruising consistent with repeated blunt-force trauma."

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"There were multiple impacts?"

"Yes."

"Not just one."

His hands slowly clenched into fists.

The room suddenly felt colder.

"I want copies of every medical report."

"You'll have them."

"And photographs of every injury."

Dr. Brooks understood immediately.

"You intend to press charges."

Marcus looked toward the recovery room.

"I intend to make sure the person responsible never hurts my family—or anyone else's—again."

Downstairs, two uniformed detectives stepped off the elevator.

Daniel Reyes met them in the lobby.

"Detectives."

"Chief Reyes."

"We understand you have surveillance footage."

Daniel nodded.

"And a victim currently under medical care."

The lead detective adjusted his notebook.

"Where's the suspect?"

Daniel looked toward the secured conference room.

"Waiting."

The detective nodded once.

"Let's begin."

Inside the conference room, Isabella heard footsteps approaching.

Then she heard the unmistakable click of handcuffs being removed from an officer's belt.

For the first time since the attack...

Fear became real.
