Chapter 11: The Return

Chapter 11: The Return
The ICU fell silent after Michael's warning.
Marcus looked from Michael to William.
"You think he's right?"
William didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he stared through the glass wall toward the hospital corridor.
"If Charles has spent years searching for that file..."

He turned back to the room.
"...he won't give up now."
Detective Laura Bennett was already reaching for her phone.
"I'll double security."
"No," William said.
She looked up.
"He'll expect that."
"What are you suggesting?"
William's eyes narrowed.
"We make him believe the report is somewhere else."
Within thirty minutes, a strategy meeting was underway inside William's private office.
Only six people were present.
William Carter.
Marcus Thorne.
Detective Bennett.
Daniel Reyes.
Dr. Amelia Brooks.
And Michael Donovan, who joined through a secure video connection from his hospital room.
Daniel projected a blueprint of Carter Memorial Medical Center onto a large screen.
"The original DNA report is stored in the Executive Records Vault."
He pointed to a reinforced room beneath the administrative wing.
"Biometric locks."
"Steel doors."
"Twenty-four-hour surveillance."
Marcus frowned.
"So it's secure."
Daniel nodded.
"Extremely."
"But Charles knows this hospital."
"He helped approve the renovation fifteen years ago."
William looked at the blueprint.
"Then he also knows about the old maintenance tunnels."
Daniel's expression changed.
"I forgot about those."
Michael spoke through the monitor.
"He won't use the main entrance."
"He'll come underground."
Meanwhile, forty miles outside the city, Charles Whitmore sat inside an abandoned hunting lodge.
Maps covered a wooden table.
Blueprints.
Hospital floor plans.
Old maintenance records.
Three men stood nearby.
One of them asked,
"What's the plan?"
Charles calmly folded a blueprint.
"We go in tonight."
"What about the police?"
"They're watching every entrance."
"So?"
Charles smiled.
"They've forgotten the exits."
He reached into a leather folder and removed an old brass key.
"This hospital is older than most people realize."
Back at Carter Memorial, Khloe sat quietly beside the window.
Rain had finally stopped.
The city lights sparkled beneath a clear night sky.
Marcus entered carrying dinner.
"You skipped lunch."
She smiled faintly.
"I wasn't hungry."
He set the tray aside and sat beside her.
"You heard everything this afternoon."
Khloe nodded.
"So... Charles manipulated Isabella."
"It appears that way."
She looked down at her wedding ring.
"I almost feel sorry for her."
Marcus looked surprised.
"After what she did?"
Khloe sighed.
"No."
"I'll never excuse what she did."
"But now I know she wasn't the only monster."
Marcus wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
"The person responsible will answer for all of it."
Khloe leaned against him.
"I just want this to end."
"So do I."
At 11:47 p.m., Daniel Reyes received an alert.
Motion detected.
Sublevel Two.
He immediately checked the security cameras.
Nothing.
The hallway appeared empty.
He frowned.
"False alarm?"
Then another sensor activated.
Sublevel Three.
Again...
No one appeared on camera.
Daniel picked up his radio.
"All units, move to the lower maintenance corridors."
Security officers hurried downstairs.
Detective Bennett joined them moments later.
"What did you see?"
"Nothing."
"That's what worries me."
Deep beneath the hospital, a rusted maintenance hatch slowly opened.
Charles Whitmore climbed inside first.
Behind him came two men dressed in black.
Each carried a small flashlight.
Charles studied the old blueprint.
"The vault is two hundred feet ahead."
One of the men whispered,
"The cameras?"
"Disconnected years ago."
He smiled.
"At least that's what the renovation report said."
They moved quietly through the narrow tunnel.
None of them noticed a tiny blinking light mounted on the ceiling.
A motion sensor.
Recently installed.
Daniel watched the sensor activate again.
"This isn't a malfunction."
Detective Bennett leaned over his shoulder.
"They're inside."
Daniel immediately pressed the emergency lockdown button.
Across the hospital, reinforced security doors slammed shut one after another.
Heavy steel barriers sealed every underground exit.
Warning lights flashed throughout the lower levels.
Charles stopped walking.
"What was that?"
One of his men looked back.
"The tunnel just locked."
Charles's calm expression disappeared for the first time.
"We've been detected."
Above them, William Carter calmly watched the security monitors.
Marcus stood beside him.
"You knew he'd come."
William nodded.
"He couldn't resist."
Detective Bennett entered.
"We have them trapped."
William didn't celebrate.
"Not yet."
"Why?"
"Because Charles always has a backup plan."
As if on cue—
Every monitor in the security room suddenly went black.
One by one.
Camera after camera.
Until the entire surveillance wall displayed nothing but static.
Daniel stared in disbelief.
"We just lost every feed."
"How?"
"I don't know."
Emergency generators automatically activated.
Still nothing.
Someone had remotely disabled the hospital's security network.
Michael's voice suddenly came over the secure speakerphone.
"I know who did it."
Everyone turned.
"It wasn't Charles."
Detective Bennett frowned.
"Then who?"
Michael swallowed.
"The only person capable of shutting down the hospital's entire security system..."
He looked directly at Daniel.
"...is the person who replaced me after I resigned."
Daniel's face went pale.
"Kevin Ellis."
"The new Director of Information Technology."
Michael nodded.
"He works for Charles."
Before anyone could react, the lights throughout the administrative wing flickered.
Then went out completely.
Emergency lighting bathed the corridors in a dim red glow.
Down in the tunnels, Charles smiled for the first time that night.
"It looks like Kevin did his job."
He folded the blueprint and continued walking.
"The vault is unprotected now."
But Charles didn't know one crucial detail.
William Carter had anticipated the possibility of a cyberattack weeks earlier.
The DNA report inside the Executive Records Vault...
Was no longer there.
It had been quietly moved to a place no one would ever think to search.

And while Charles led his men deeper beneath the hospital, the real document rested safely inside an ordinary-looking locked drawer...
In Khloe's private hospital room.
