Chapter 14: Vivian's Choice

Chapter 14: Vivian's Choice
William Carter didn't speak for several moments.
Marcus had known him for years. He had seen him negotiate billion-dollar deals, face hostile takeovers, and stand before grieving families after medical tragedies.
He had never seen him look shaken.
"Where is Vivian now?" Marcus finally asked.
Daniel Reyes answered first.
"According to personnel records, she retired six years ago."
"Current address?"
Daniel shook his head.

"The file hasn't been updated since her retirement."
Detective Laura Bennett entered the office carrying a tablet.
"We just found her."
Everyone turned toward her.
"She's living in a small town about ninety minutes north of the city."
William slowly stood.
"I'm going."
Marcus looked at him.
"Not alone."
An hour later, two SUVs pulled into the quiet lakeside town of Willow Creek.
William, Marcus, Detective Bennett, and Daniel stepped out.
Vivian Hale's cottage overlooked a peaceful lake surrounded by tall pine trees.
It looked like the last place anyone would expect to find the center of a seven-year conspiracy.
William walked to the front porch and knocked.
No answer.
He knocked again.
Still nothing.
Detective Bennett noticed the front door wasn't fully closed.
She exchanged a glance with Daniel.
"Stay behind us."
Daniel pushed the door open.
The house was silent.
A teacup sat on the kitchen table.
Steam no longer rose from it.
Someone had left in a hurry.
The group carefully searched each room.
Nothing appeared out of place until Marcus entered the study.
"William..."
Everyone hurried in.
A photograph lay on the desk.
It showed a much younger William Carter standing beside Vivian during the opening ceremony of a new hospital wing.
The frame had recently fallen to the floor.
Next to it was a handwritten note.
William picked it up.
His hands trembled slightly.
The note contained only one sentence.
I'm sorry. I never wanted it to happen this way.
There was no signature.
But William immediately recognized the handwriting.
"Vivian."
Detective Bennett searched the room more carefully.
She opened a desk drawer.
Inside she found an old photo album.
Most of the photographs showed hospital events, charity dinners, and holiday celebrations.
Then one picture caught her attention.
It showed William, Vivian...
...and Charles Whitmore.
All three were smiling.
Marcus stared at the photo.
"They were friends."
William nodded sadly.
"Once."
Daniel's phone suddenly rang.
He answered immediately.
"Reyes."
A patrol officer spoke urgently.
"We found Mrs. Hale's car."
"Where?"
"Abandoned at the Willow Creek train station."
"Any sign of her?"
"No."
Daniel thanked the officer and turned to the others.
"She didn't leave voluntarily."
Detective Bennett's expression hardened.
"You think Charles got to her first."
William quietly folded the handwritten note.
"I think she's in danger."
At the same time, Charles Whitmore stood inside an old hunting cabin deep in the woods.
Vivian sat across from him.
Her wrists weren't tied.
The cabin door wasn't locked.
But she knew she couldn't leave.
Charles calmly poured two cups of tea.
"You've always liked chamomile."
Vivian didn't touch it.
"You kidnapped me."
"I invited you."
"You threatened my neighbor with a gun."
Charles sighed.
"I was in a hurry."
Vivian looked at him with disappointment.
"I barely recognize you anymore."
Charles smiled faintly.
"The feeling is mutual."
He slid a faded photograph across the table.
It showed William holding a newborn baby.
"Tell me where the report is."
Vivian remained silent.
Charles leaned forward.
"You know."
"I don't."
"You helped hide it."
"I helped protect it."
"Same difference."
Vivian shook her head.
"No."
"It protected someone who never asked to be part of this."
Charles's voice grew colder.
"One piece of paper."
"That's all I want."
"It was never about the paper."
"Then what?"
Vivian looked directly into his eyes.
"It was about giving a child a normal life."
Charles frowned.
"What child?"
Vivian immediately realized she had said too much.
Back at Carter Memorial Medical Center, Khloe sat beside the nursery window, watching several newborn babies sleep peacefully.
A young nurse smiled.
"Someday yours will be in there."
Khloe gently rested a hand on her stomach.
"I can't wait."
"You still have a few weeks."
"I know."
The nurse looked toward the hallway.
"Your husband worries about you."
Khloe laughed softly.
"He always has."
As she turned away from the window, she noticed someone standing at the far end of the corridor.
A woman.
She appeared to be in her early sixties.
Well dressed.
Elegant.
The woman smiled warmly at Khloe.
Then quietly walked away.
Khloe frowned.
Something about her seemed strangely familiar.
Meanwhile, forensic analysts completed their examination of Charles Whitmore's abandoned office.
Detective Bennett received the report electronically.
Most of the office had been cleaned thoroughly.
Almost professionally.
But one fingerprint had survived.
Not Charles's.
Not Michael Donovan's.
The print belonged to...
Vivian Hale.
Bennett immediately called Daniel.
"We have confirmation."
"Of what?"
"Vivian wasn't helping Charles recently."
"She confronted him."
"How do you know?"
"Her fingerprints were found on documents Charles tried to destroy."
Daniel smiled slightly.
"So she fought back."
"It looks that way."
Late that evening, Marcus and William returned from Willow Creek empty-handed.
Khloe immediately knew something was wrong.
"You didn't find her."
William slowly shook his head.
"No."
Khloe looked at his tired face.
"Who is Vivian?"
William sat down across from her.
For a long moment, he simply looked at his niece.
Finally, he spoke.
"She spent more than thirty years protecting our family."
Khloe waited quietly.
"And now..."
He lowered his eyes.
"...I think she's risking her life to protect yours."
At that same moment, inside the remote hunting cabin, Vivian quietly reached into the sleeve of her sweater.
She pulled out a tiny folded piece of paper she had hidden there before Charles abducted her.
It contained only an address.
Not a name.
Not a map.
Just an address.
She looked toward the window, where Charles stood speaking on the phone outside.
Then she made a decision.
She slipped the paper beneath a loose floorboard.
If someone found the cabin...
They would find the clue.
Because Vivian knew something Charles didn't.
The address wasn't where the DNA report was hidden.
It was where the person connected to that report had been living all along.
May you like
And if Charles ever discovered that person first...
The consequences would reach far beyond the Carter family.
